Outfitter Review: Colorado Trophies - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Tom/Lynn Colander

Hunter: Mike Murphy

Animals Hunted: Elk

Tom's operation is first rate. I hunted with him (he was one of the guides as well) during an archery elk hunt. My first time elk hunting. Tom is extremely ethical and expects this from his hunters. His operation was very well organized, and you always knew well in advance what the plan would be for each hunt. This was a Lodge based hunt with plenty of walking each morning and night. Expect close shots. Tom made sure we practiced at 5 and 10 yds - that was a very real possiblity given the terrain we hunted. We were close to elk every hunt, but not within bow range every hunt due to wind swirling, animals having something else in mind etc, but the possibility of a close encounter was there every day. I ultimately got a average 5x5 bugling like crazy with an 18 yd shot on the third morning- it is still going on the wall, if nothing else other than due to the great memories of the hunt..... Everything about the 5 day hunt/7 day stay was very very good. I would come back in a heart beat. All the guides were great - they interacted with everyone in camp, not just "their hunters" great stories, everyone gave each other good natured guy crap about their bows (Mathews v. Bowtech -"my XYZ would've just pinned him to the tree and you wouldn't have had to worry about a blood trail at all) etc. Most everyone had an opportunity - some botched due to hunter error like pulling the trigger on your release before the bull got to a shooting lane (one hunter did this twice in one day). Out of 10 hunters, 4 took home an animal. Only downside is that this is an over the counter license area of Colorado. The really big bulls are few and far between. But there are lots of legal bulls in the area - did not see another hunter the entire time (frequently we were on BLM land).

Outfitter / Owner: Harold Paeglow

Hunter: Roger Williams

Animals Hunted: Elk-Bow Hunt

We spent all the prime early morning/late afternoon riding horses to and from the hunting site, where we found no elk- They have cow running all over the Rhoutt Nat. Forest. Harold didn't know where the elk were before I got there. Finally on the 4th day we got on a bull elk, that was coming to cow call, Harold got so agressive he ran bull off. We set-up in another location and cow called by a meadow-a good 5x5 or 6x6 came out 15 yds from me, I started to draw-Harold was 10 ft. from me-he cow called and made bull look right at us at the worst possible time. The bull turned and went right back in timber. Terrible!! Last day I shot a calf at 40 yds that was sharp quartering away-after we didn't find it within 100 yds(with good blood), I told him we should leave it for a couple hours because I thought I only got one lung-he jumped it up 20 yds later and then again within another 30 yds. Never did find it. Very Poor

Outfitter / Owner: Kevin Faddis

Hunter: Todd Rhea

Animals Hunted: Elk/Deer

We had hunters from 3 states that filed fraud complaints with the Colorado Department of Outfitters Registration. After a 6 month investigation, they found that Kevin Faddis was in violation of the state laws/codes. He has been put on probation by the Department of Outfitters as a result. Kevin Faddis signed the hearing results agreeing to the complaints and accepting the punishment. A copy of this is available. Several people from our group are filing law suits and have already sent in claims against his bond company. As for archery hunting for Elk, not a good choice. The guides were all very nice and experienced. The issue was that they had never seen any of the property we hunted prior to our arrival. Kevin himself knows the property, but you may not be with Kevin!

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff Miner

Hunter: Shawn Morrison

Animals Hunted: mule deer

There are several of us whom did business with Battlement Mesa Outfitters and Jeff Miner in 2007. Needless to say we are very disappointed with how he conducted his business, as of now there is several lawsuits and liens that have been filed as a result of the lack of integrity and unpaid bills and bounced checks among other items. Not only did he shortchange his landowners he also shortchanged some of his guides and as of this moment nothing has been resolved. I feel that anybody who books with this outfitter is taking a big chance because I'm sure that there is many more unhappy people that have been dealt with unfairly. so.. consider yourselves forewarned.

When I hunted with Kevin the game sightings were unbelievable some days.I had quite a few good chances to shoot great bulls but didnt take a shot. I saw probably 6 to 8 bulls within 30 yards anywhere between 230 and 320 class. We had one herd bull that was about 360 class that came in but he came in head on and I didnt want to chance it. I ended up taking a 283 class 6x6. I am very happy with it, and I am extremely happy with Kevin's hunting and calling experience. Any questions please call Mitch at 610-389-0464

I've been on two other elk hunts with other outfitters in Colorado and Wyoming. Dryside Outfitters put me on a lot of elk. The area was not hard to access. We spot and stalked large groups of elk. The largest herd was approximately 40 strong. Both my friend Bill and I harvested nice elk and saw even larger that we couldn't get on. The accomodations were good and there was plenty of food on the table. This hunt took place in October of 2007 and I will be returning to hunt mule deer with Kevin Faddis in October of 2008.

Outfitter / Owner: Dodds

Hunter: Jay Johnston

Animals Hunted: Elk

Dick and Cheryl Dodds run a top notch elk hunt in North Colorado. All details were considered, hundreds of elk seen, and the food was good. This is not a rich mans hunt with a fancy lodge, just a high quality, helpfull outfit that was a huge improvement over my 2006 hunt in NW Colorado (See "Higher Ground" review this site)Elkhorn seperates the hunters, and you can expect to see dozens if not hundreds of elk and deer a day. If you have any skill with a rifle, you will do well here. Very recommended.

Outfitter Review: Winterhawk Outfitters - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Larry Amos

Hunter: Dean J. Daniels

Animals Hunted: Elk

I broke a couple of ribs the very first day because my horse bolted when they jammed all hunters (3 parties ) together at 1 gate. Mr. Amos never even asked if I needed any assistance, preferring instead to hope the week past and I would simply leave without problems. Also we only hunted about 1 1/2 hour in the morning and much the same in the evening. WINTERHAWK was hosting a televised rifle hunt in 2 weeks and I think they preferred to ruin our hunt to keep the Elk around for their professional acting careers. All in all? Pretty Country, abysmal hunt and a completely disinterested owner. Don't waste your time and hard earned money

Outfitter Review: Apache Park Outfitters - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Rick Sears

Hunter: Gerry Newell

Animals Hunted: Elk, Mule Deer

I went on a trophy elk/mule deer hunt with Apache Park Outfitters approximately two years ago. Half way to the camp site Rick called and redirected us from New Mexico to Colorado because he "hadn't seen any game in New Mexico in weeks". Not knowing the difference, we agreed. He had also assured us that he had accommodations for handicapped hunters. He sure did! If you call sitting on a stone pile all day in the middle of a field to be handicap accommodations. I personally never saw an animal nor did my son. My son in law shot a beautiful elk on a piece of land they had no right to be on and had to pay the owner $500 for an animal that another hunter shot in the same place. (A tresspass fee they called it). It was a disaster and as I was unable to participate, it was simply a huge waste of my money. Rick refused to refund anything even though he had guaranteed all three of us trophy elk and trophy mule deer. What a rip off. I will probably never have another opportunity to take a trip like this due to my health and I feel that we were cheated in the worst way. What started out to be a memorable experience for me, my son, and my son in law turned out to be the biggest disappointment of my life. Oh, by the way, the accommodations turned out to be a rat infested old deserted house that had been condemned and we had to stay in a flea-bag motel during the hunt. (No heat - no hot water). I wish I could tell everyone in the world what a louse and cheat this Rick Sears and his Apache Park Outfitters are!

Kevin was contacted 1 month prior to our archery hunt via conference call. We were basically lied to on the call. Out of eleven hunters in camp not one elk was harvested and we were all but guaranteed an opportunity. Kevin violated at least 3 provisions of his contract. Kevin initially had agreed to a 50% refund but then never contacted me again. Animals Hunted: Antelope

It's hard to put into a few words above how our hunt was. Mr brother and I only hunted one day because we both filled our tags the first day on a 3 day hunt. The antelope we took were what we thought were nice average representative heads for antelope, not huge. The outfitter and guides all worked very hard for us. A couple of the guides in camp were new to this outfitter and therefore were just learning the area but they all were willing to work hard for us. As stated above the accomodations were a little rough but we knew before we went that we would be staying in an old farm house and so this was okay with us.

I had spoken with Donny Carr throughout the summer and he sure did his scouting. On just the first hour of my hunt we spooked 5 elk one of which was a tiny spike. About an hour later we glassed a canyon bottom and spotted a monster 350 9x8 bull that was grazing with 5 cows. We put a stalk on him to within 300 yards and I gave the monster bull my best shot and he went down right where he was. Donny was almost as excited as I was and he definitely knows how to put you on a trophy elk. I've never had a guide who knows the area and game better than he does. Truely an amazing outfitter and I was recommend him to everyone who wants to take a real trophy elk.

This was a trespass fee hunt for DIY mule deer. Was my first time hunting mule deer, didn't know what to expect. Larry took us to the ranch a day before the hunt, gave us a map of our hunting area along with our rules and regulations. Had 5 days to hunt, my partner and I both tagged out the second day. My buck was 5 x 4 22-1/2" wide counting brows & a sticker. In two days hunting seen 350+ deer with 50+ being bucks. On day threeLarry contacted us to make sure we were seeing deer, he'll go out of his way to make sure you get your tag filled. Larry is top notch, honest in the size bucks you can take on his ranches. Exceeded my goals for the hunt.

Larry would not send up more food. No wood for fires. Guide got lost in snow storm on way back to camp. Thankfully we had GPS with. Place was overrun with hunters. Larry had over 60 up there himself, plus public hunters. Larry will not even respond to email or letters. His reputation is know all the way to Denver as being horrible.

Larry sent contracts through the mail, every thing was in wrighting, right down to the name of the ranch I would have access to. I got onto the ranch propery that I was to hunt the day before opening day. Larry showed me the blind location, when we drove in antelope scattered in all directions from the water hole and the blind area. The next morning I was in the blind before daylight, about 8am I took a perfectly even 70inch antelope buck from 23 yards with my bow. I could have waited for something differant but this buck was exactly what I was after, good mass up the horns, perfect cutters and matching points. The antelope in this area GMU003 north of Craig Colorado have great genetics, I am accumulating preferance points for a return trip in a few years. Thanks Larry.

Went hunting for "elk and deer" in 2001 with this outfitter during the rifle season. Saw no elk and few deer. Camp had 10+ hunters and instead of western style hunting, driving around in trucks with hunters piled in the bed, doing drives and a lot of down time. During times when not hunting in groups, guides dropped hunters off at spots even I felt were poor. Guides were arogant and treated hunters more like a nuisance. The outfitter, Jack Cassidy, was present the entire time and his guides were terrible. Other hunters in camp also had similar low morale and quality of other deer they shot was poor. I've been hunting in various western states and Canada and by comparison this outfitter is by far the least professional and I do not recommend investing your time and money on this one.

Well our first day in the woods was also our guides first day. We spent most of our time easing away from the truck (hoping to fill a day with little work). When we found elk 1/2 mile away our guide didn't want to persue him, it would be to much work to get it out if we were successful. He was more concerned about the easy way versus the successful way. He seemed to have little experience with bow hunters. He promised to call elk within bow range, don't know how he had no idea were they were. Overall he is laid back and LAZY, if you can shoot it from a truck he may be a good guide. Great guy to talk to but put forth no preseason effort for your success.

The area hunted was private land and what I would call high desert. This type of terrain doesn't hold huge numbers of elk but the elk that are there tend to be of a higher quality (bigger antlers) than lots of other areas in Colorado because of the genetics in this area plus low hunting pressure. I have hunted the Gila area of New Mexico several times and the quality is close to that level. My hunt was for archery and was successful. I would definitely recommend this outfitter to anyone interested.

2007; my third successful black powder hunt with Elk Basin Outfitters. Hard working and dedicated people!!! Year 1; 5x5 evening of 1st day. Year 2; 5x5 morning of 2nd day. Year 3; 6x5 morning of 1st day. This is vertical country, be physically prepared to hike, climb and walk. As with all hunts the weather, moon phase and hunter's conditioning play an important role. Some years the elk are more vocal than others but the guides know where they hang out if in the area. My above ratings are based upon 3 years of experience with this outfitter. The beauty of the West Elk Mountains and pleasure of the trail ride in/out are as rewarding as the hunting experience.

Owner informed us at drop point, "If you haven't seen anything here in a couple of days, I will check back with you and move you to the cabins" (I guess that is where the elk were) Four days later and no show from owner, or from the elk, we left, just like the hunter before us in the same camp.

Our previous hunts resulted in 100% success of quality bulls. Thanks Jake and Sal Dennis Eberhardt

Outfitter / Owner: Weston Clark

Hunter: Christine

Animals Hunted: elk

This outfitter is not as he proclaims. I was not a hunter but someone who Weston had hired. After performing my duties, he has refused to pay me. I did all he asked and more, and as I left his statement to me "I was the best he had ever had, I was his go to girl". The ad in the paper read as "Model/Hostess/Cook Great pay! Cool boss $100.00 a day travel" He also asked for a picture before he hired me. The labor board has even tried to mediate with no avail. He told them he never hired me I just came to hang out with a friend. If any of you have any information on previous employees, or the camera men that filmed this hunt, or if you were on this hunt, October 23-28, 2006, please contact me. His whole business is a scam, one of his guides had never even been to Colorado or been a guide for big game. One of his camera men said he had not been paid either. I had no idea this would happen or I would have taken names. So please help if you can.

Outfitter / Owner: Curt Weimer

Hunter: Bruce Alpart

Animals Hunted: Elk

This was the worst hunting experience I've ever encountered. Mr. Weimer and Dale Purcell (former owner) both lied to me about: hunting land, accommodations, kill rate, quantity of legal bulls, and accessibility. We were supposed to be hunting on private land; we hunted on public land with hundreds of hunters. Every where you looked there was florescent orange. We were supposed to be 4 in a cabin; we were 12 in a tiny 10 x 24 bunk house. We were told the kill rate was about 85% during the 2nd rifle season; not one of the 12 guided hunters in camp killed an elk. We were told to expect to get a shot at a legal bull; No one in camp got a shot at an elk, period. Camp was one mile from the divide road (between area 61 and 62)down a total mud road that was 14" deep of mud. We had to drive it twice a day (to and from hunting) to get to our hunting areas which required an hours ride. So we lost 2 hours of hunting time each day. Please contact me if you are considering a hunt with Sunset Canyon Outfitters. I will tell you the truth about this outfitter. Bruce Alpart, (518) 672-7392 or email me at bea@taconic.net

My brother and I hunted with Eric on our first guided elk/deer hunt and we were more than satisfied. Being our first guided hunt we did not know what to expect except that we wanted the guides to work as hard as we did and they did. They knew the area well and knew where the game would be. We had shooting opportunities everyday. I contribute this to the fact that the guides knew where to go. We are going back this fall and are bring along 4 other friends. I have no reservations about referencing Eric Layman to anybody. Thanks and Happy Hunting.

Outfitter Review: Winter Hawk Outfitterss - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Larry

Hunter: Gary Robidoux

Animals Hunted: Elk

The reason for so many N/A's is that our hunt never materialized as planned. We placed a $900.00 deposit for a fall muzzleloader hunt for this past year 2006. They payment was non refundable by contract and that was clearly understood. The payment was made in spring of 2005. Our group leader who made the arrangements with Larry the owner ended up having serious and unavoidable back surgery. In addition his wifes employer move the company to New Jersey unexpectedly.Needless to say they had to deal with the surgery and sell off most of their assets and move 3 states away while in recovery. This prevented my good friend from physically being able to participate in our scheduled hunt. When presented with our situation the owner of Winter Hawk (Larry) Stated that if he could re-book our slots he would refund our deposits. He further indicated that it shouldn't be a problem. As time went on we heard nothing. E-Mails recieved no response, and letters un answered. At the show in Penn.outside of Harrisburg I was surprise to see Winter Hawk there. I was informed by the representative that they had a fully booked and fairly successful muzzleloader season in the fall of 2006. When we identified ourselves and presented our situation the rep had no answers. He took down my address and information and promised a reply. As usual there has been no response. I guess the integrity of a mans word in Colorado is worth about $2700.00. In Massachusetts a mans word is "free" and when given it is "KEPT". We understand what the contract says, and realize we are contractually owed nothing. If he had offered a portion of the deposit we would have considered that very honorable. If he admitted making the offer by mistake or without thinking it through would at least be somewhat honorable.Contracts are one thing but in life bad things happen when you don't expect it. To blow smoke up our backside and show no compassion for unexpected misfortunes for a man who is still recovering from surgery is just plain shameful especially when there were no finacial losses.I find no honor in this outfit.

I have hunted with Garveys many times over the years. I have taken 2 6x6 bulls a 5x5 bull, 2 cows, 4 nice heavy horned bucks from 24" to 30" wide. one bear and a very nice 150lb mountain lion. The Garveys have become very good friends of mine. I am amazed at how hard Stan & his guides work to get you a trophy you will be proud of, not just fill your tag. Out of 11 tags I have only had one unfilled tag (Bear) Anytime I can get a tag in unit 61 I will hunt with Garvey Bros.

The elk were there, they just wouldn't respond well to calling. Success rate this year wasn't as good as 2005, but I still had an excellent time even though I did not get a chance at an elk. They hunted mornings and afternoons (usually took a lunch break), and on only one afternoon did I not see elk. We also saw several moose (including a bull that was monster and a few really nice muleys. I hunted in 2004 and I have been sick about thewaste of time and money ever since. Chris said "he knew where the big ones were", but we never seen any from the road. All that the guides wanted to do was drink beer and road hunt. They would sleep several hours during the middle of the day, so our hunting time was limited to mornings and evenings riding in the truck. Some of the hunters did shoot some small deer they found along the road. I didn't go just to shoot any deer to fill my tag. I went based upon the animals they said were available in their hunting area and never did see one. Animals Hunted: Elk

Camp accomodations were fine. Where do I begin on the hunting experience:1. Guides laid down and fell asleep while trying to call in an elk.2. One guide got lost and we had to go and find him3. Admitted to keeping us out of the dark timber, where elk live in 80 degree weather, so as not to chase them out for other hunters coming in later seasons. I built up preference points so I could go on an early season hunt. They are now wasted!4. Guide tried to put me on an illegal stand near a salt block. 5. Had 2 hunters back in camp by 9 or 10 AM on 3 of the 7 hunting days6. Guides had absolutely no experience hunting elk in the rut but said they did before we signed contract.7. On the last day, we insisted on being taken to an area where dark timber was present. We hunted on our own and called in an elk and shot and hit it with a muzzleloader. It was raining and we tried to track it. The guide and the outfitter were on the trail below us and were contacted via radio. They would not assist in helping to locate the wounded game. They said they were unable to find us but we are sure they made no attempt to find us. We were able to communicate to others in our hunting party and able to guide them to us from 3 mountains away. 8. The outfitter (Eric Layman) flat out told me his hunts are designed for the once in a lifetime hunter who comes out west and is satisfied to ride horses and see game from a mile away. This is NOT what he told us when we booked the hunt at the Harrisburg, PA Eastern Sportsman Show. We were told they were experienced in calling in elk. These people will say anything to get your business. If you want a nice horseback riding vacation then this is the place for you. If you want to hunt STAY AWAY. We are experienced elk hunters that are accustomed to hunting on our own. We have killed 25+ bull elk all on our own while hunting in Idaho. All of our hunting is on foot and we pack our own game on our back. We choose to go with an outfitter because there are more elk in CO, we wanted to have someone else pack our game, and we wanted to have the use of horses to make it a little easier on ourselves.

Did not see any Bull Elk. Nobody in camp on a GUIDED bull elk hunt saw any legal bull elk! Camp was 1 foot deep mud. Traveled by truck on VERY bumpy roads for 1 hour every morning after sleeping in an old bunk bed. Saw alot of hunters, a couple of cow elk, one mule deer and that's it! 14 hunters in camp gave $40,000 for zero legal bulls even seen! Primitive accomodations and saw no bull elk. My guide was driving drunk to get me back to camp one day. Saw no bull elk. Mr. Weimer addressed all of us at the beginning and stated that if we had any complaints, make them known while your here, otherwise "f*@# ya". Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

I hunted with Jeff Chadd and Dan Murphy during the second rifle season in 2005. This was a public land hunt in the Gunnison basin in southwest Colorado. Five years of mild winters, in this region, has produced some of the best trophy mule deer hunting in the country. When I signed on for the hunt, I told them that I was looking for a 200 inch mule deer. When I arived they were very prepared and had individually scouted every morning and every evening for the past two weeks. They videotape bucks when they are scouting and they showed me video of several terrific bucks including one that they estimated to be about 197 B&C. Because tags are limited in this region and the animals are minimally disturbed by hunting pressure, there is a reasonable chance of seeing the same deer twice. The night before the season opened we spotted a 226 B&C buck and the next morning we were able to find and harvest him. This was a outstanding hunt. Jeff and Dan's professionalism, skill and talent among the best I have encountered in 20 mule deer hunts in many western states. Most importantly, they are good, honest and hardworking people who do their best to make your hunt enjoyable.

I've hunted first season with Marie/JML on drop-camp hunts for the past two years and have been completely satisfied with every aspect of the experience and the service. Camp is in a spectacular setting with abundant game and I've seen only one other hunter in two seasons. Marie and her crew tend to the "administrative" aspects of our week-long hunt competently and efficiently so that we're able to focus our efforts entirely on finding and pursuing game. But beyond handling the nuts and bolts aspects of the hunt, Marie and the folks at JML also demonstrate a genuine interest in trying to make their clients' experiences are successful ones and are just really good people, to boot. This probably accounts for the fact that most of her business appears to be repeat or referral-based. I'd recommend them without reservation.

Animals Hunted: elk

Higher Ground outfitters (Colorado not NM version)advertises a hunt in NW Colorado with a 300K hunt area of public and private land. Reality was we were driven out to a mesa 10 miles from Maybell and sat in 60 degree weather waiting for the elk migration. Could see the highway. People on every high point which makes it a very expensive road hunt. The "guide" had never been there before and no one had a backup plan or knowledge of the area. I had to use my own vehicle because the outfitter did not provide 4x4's or even have room for 2 hunters (single cab)The outfitter had 23 hunters in 2 camps, one of which was in a public square in Maybell with 30-40 other non residents. Not exactly what a "guided elk" hunt should feel like.I was the only hunter to tag out because I left the hunt plan and struck off on my own, climbing a mountain without any guide and killing an average bull. 1 in 23 are not good odds, but you wont see that in the brochure. The truth is that this hunt is totally dependent on a heavy snow, even then it would be a very hectic affair with alot of non residents chasing herds around on the mesa west of Maybell. You wont be told this on the phone with Clark.Avoid this outfitter at all costs. The hunt is completely misrepresented and conducted in a corrupt and unprofessional manner. Several hunters went with another outfitter 2/3 of the way through the hunt because they knew it was the only chance of seeing/taking an elk. If you want to hunt this area, buy a tag over the internet and pull your camper to the square in Maybell CO. You will probably see the outfitters tent there and save several thousands.

We’ve been there twice. Both times went very well. And we are planning to return. The fist year was amazing, great country, nice weather, elk moving everywhere, we passed on several, and still filled out including 4 bulls, one a nice 6x6 and 2 cows. The second year despite snowy weather, and less elk movement, we still got 50%, including a decent 5x5.Marie, Ron and crew know what there’re doing and treated us well. The camp accommodations are good, roomy, a separate cooking tent, with furnished gas burners, and cooking utensils. Having fresh drinkable clean water close by from a spring, was a real treat. Country is amazing, nice 3-4 hour ride in on horse back, gets you to the mountain top, once up there walking is easier, as not to steep of walks on daily routes. Hunting blinds located in productive spots.

The outfitter was unethical and lied to us. We were told we would be hunting on private property, but it was National Forest with others. We were orginally going to be hunting in the Management Unit around Ridgeway on our own, but hooked up with this guy through a taxidermist one of our guys knew. The Outfitter told us our tags were good in his area, but they weren't. He told us that his area had several very large bulls and had many large muleys. One of the older guides told us that was never the case. In fact the bulls were average and there were few muleys in this area. Before the trip he said he would talk to the landowner to see if they had any deer tags left for me since I was unsuccessful in drawing a tag. How's that possible on public land? Since I didn't have a mule deer tag he suggested I get a bear tag. Then when I got to camp the first day he mentioned that they have ever only seen one bear there. Glad I didn't waste the money on a tag.His two guides saved our hunt. If it wasn't for them we would of been totally screwed. The Outfitter tried to make good, but it doesn't make up for the lies and unethical practices.I paid for a guided hunt, but ended up with basically a drop camp and one day guided hunt thanks to the one guide.Again the guides were great and I'd hunt with them any day, but the Outfitter sucked!

My friends and I have been pursuing elk for 15 + years. I myself have hunted in Colorado, Idaho, & Montana. Mostly with bow & one time before with a muzzleloader, after our first hunt with the muzzleloader in Colorado we decided that this would be the hunt of choice. So we decided to start sending for preference points to hunt in a good area. Well after 12 years we finally drew a tag and decided to hunt with Frazier OutfittersWell this was the best decision I ever made! Everything from the beginning was great. Sammy informed us of what this hunt would be like, what you should bring, the stress of the altitude, weather conditions, riding horses, be sure you can shoot! Etc.We all filled our tags with great bulls and great memories. 7x7 6x6 5x6 The best part of this hunt was the having the best guides I think there are!Pat, Marty & Ed were the most professional, hard working, caring and nicest people you could ever meet. They worked with all our individual needs. I especially would like to thank Marty for her patience with me. It was tough for me breathing, and I needed more breaks than others, but she understood, and got me into position to fulfill a dream that I will never forget.

We booked our trip with Dale Purcell and found out at the last minute that our hunt was with Sunset Canyon Outfitters. We were told that we would be in a cabin of four, it was twelve. We were told we would shoot at a range before the hunt to check our sight in, a couple of guys shot off-hand through the middle of camp at a paper plate! The accomodations were extremely dirty, smelly and muddy! Of all the hunters in camp on a guided Bull Elk hunt, NONE ever saw a single legal Bull Elk. NEVER SAW ONE AT ANY DISTANCE!!!!!!! Everybody saw lots and lots of other hunters. You will be on public land with this guide. My GPS totaled 27.8 walking miles for the five days of hunting without even seeing one! I got food poisoning on the last night and vomitted during the night. My guide had NEVER guided during rifle season in his life. One of the other guides drank beer all day and drove my hunting buddy back to camp while drunk! If you have a deposit in, GET IT BACK!!!! If your thinking about this outfitter, DON'T DO IT!!! Outfitter Review: Frazier Outfitting - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Sammy Frazier

Hunter: W. Brian Meggers M.D.

Animals Hunted: Elk

Sammy and Pat were very professional, hard working, knowledgeable, and fun to be around. They run a well organized and dependable outfitting service. We saw numerous bulls, and got within 100 yards almost every day. The wind, numerous cows and the elk's keen senses make it difficult to close the gap necessary for a bow shot. I had a shot at 50 yards, but misjudged the distance and came home empty. That's bowhunting. Excellent outfitter.

Outfitter Review: Stick & String - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Matt Burrows

Hunter: Joe Duhon

Animals Hunted: Pronghorn

I booked a Pronghorn hunt through Matt. He was just the broker; however I want to tell everyone to let him know which outfitter not to use again. That is Natural Adventures in Colorado. The owner's name is Tom Tietz. I posted an opinion on here about him and anyone can feel free to contact me pertaining to it.

Outfitter Review: Natural Adventures - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Tom Tietz

Hunter: Joe Duhon

Animals Hunted: Pronghorn

I hunted for three sixteen hour days in a row in a box blind at a watering hole. I want to let everyone know that these were small round corrugated metal tanks on slabs, not what I was expecting. When they told me watering holes I expected small ponds, not extremely small troughs at best. It was a four day hunt, but I could only make six hours on the last day. I was exhausted. I never left the blind for the entire time I was in it and patient like the outfitter asked. The first two days I was at one hole and the next two on a different one. The first hole I hunted I looked at the backsides of cattle for 28 of the 32 hours I spent there. When I complained to Tom Tietz (the owner) he acted like I was being unreasonable and actually got mad at me. The last two days I hunted at a different hole because of the cattle. I saw two VERY young bucks. Maybe some would have drawn their bow and shot, but I refuse to harvest young animals. As I already stated the fourth day I only hunted six hours because I was exhausted and had to drive more than 1,000 miles home.Tom never contacted me, nor did he ever offer me a chance to come back at a reduced rate. The guide he had was a good guy and seemed knowledgeable; however he told me that he didn't take care of the monetary issues. That was handled by Tom. He just did the guiding.

Outfitter Review: Adventures Wild - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Aaron Nielsen

Hunter: Johnny Hughes

Animals Hunted: Whitetail/Mule Deer

I'm an elk outfitter in NM and I met one of Aaron's guides, Ryan Miller at a trade show. I liked him personally and the quality of the mule deer they took. I booked the hunt with the assumption, Ryan would be my guide. It was a December archery hunt in 2005. To make a long week short, I loved Ryan as a guide but we spent the first four days looking for mule deer and saw lots of does and small bucks but never saw a buck bigger than 130 class. HOWEVER, we did see a mid 170-class whitetail and 4 other whitetails over 140. I spent the last two days of the hunt trying to kill that big whitetail with no success. I got under 100 yards three times on that deer but couldn't get within bow range. For a challenge you should try sneaking within bow range of a whitetail buck, herded with 30 other deer, on the open prairie, in six-inch tall grass. Tough! But I had a blast trying! I believe there are some big muleys in the area despite not finding them that week I was there. I'm an outfitter and understand the game fully. I had fun and would do it again. Rifle hunting would be easy if you can just see the buck you want. Bring good knee pads and leather gloves!!!

Outfitter Review: Golden Eagle Outfitters - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Donny Carr

Hunter: Joel Biltz

Animals Hunted: Elk /mule deer

This was my first elk and mule deer hunt, I killed a 330 bull within 3 hours of opening morning. If I would have been more patient I probably could have killed a 350 bull, but it was hard to pass a 330 on your first elk hunt. We fought 80 degree temps the rest of our hunt and I ended up killing a 150 buck on the 8th day. There were 4 deer hunters and we went 4 for 4 with a 191 160 150 140 bucks and I was the only elk hunter so we went 100%. Great place to hunt and I would recomend Golden eagle outfitters to anyone.

Outfitter Review: Elk Basin Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Dan Toothaker

Hunter: Urs Blattmann

Animals Hunted: Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear

I have hunted with Dan 4 different years and I am going back again this year. Most of Dans hunters have hunted with him before. Been blessed to take a 350"+ Elk in 2004 and a very nice 30" Mule deer last year. Dan hunts in a Wilderness Area and the terrain varies from rock faces to gentle rolling Aspen benches and open meadows. As with any Elk hunt in the high country, if you prepare yourself you will have a great hunt here.Practice shooting for longer shots and most important, prepare yourself physically. This is a true fair chase wilderness hunt and Dan runs a first class outfit. Check their website for refs and some nice Elk taken last couple of years.

Hunter: greg rickabaugh

Animals Hunted: antelope

I paid for a top quality hunt and got a poor hunt. The cook was usually intoxicated. I saw less than a dozen antelope in two days. Four hunters shot four antelope, not one over 14 inches. In two days I saw two deer and two snakes. Not much wildlife viewing to enjoy.

Outfitter Review: River Bend Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Kip Gates

Hunter: Austin Blackwell

Animals Hunted: ELK

The bowhunt was awesome... We were on the flattops in the Whiteriver National Forest. Very isolated. Kip is a great guide and he knows where the bulls are. I held out for a big one and ran out of time. Could have taken a few shots at some smaller bulls.

Hunter: Greg Olsen

Animals Hunted: elk

I was a guide for this joker, Not only does he give one hell of a sales pitch. He fails to pay his guides on the their last hunt. Average bulls 280 unless on Muddy then you will see a couple of bulls in the 360 class if they let you hunt them. he keeps his hunters in small areas until the last two days of the hunts. Then he lets the guides show them some bulls. Overall tell all your friends to stay away from this joker.

A classic family-run operation. Everyone's good people - honest and hard working. In two hunts (one fully guided, one a drop camp) I've taken two bulls, all on public land. Gotta be willing to work, though, since it's rugged country.
