Outfitter Review: Taylor Guide and Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Lance & Terri Taylor

Hunter: Steve Morales

Animals Hunted: Elk

I had a successful hunt. (6X5 Bull elk) The reason for this was Lance Taylor's bowhunting experience, knowledge of the area, and persistence in getting on the elk. It was a tough bowhunt. (When is bowhunting not tough?) I highly recommend this outfitter. I can't wait for next year, and plan on going with Lance again. You cannot find better, or more decent people than Lance and Terri Taylor of Arboles, Colorado. If you want a good hunting experience, with a good faith effort by your guide, then I highly recommend Taylor Guide and Outfitters.

Outfitter Review: High Country Connections - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Casey Veach

Hunter: Richard S. Kucejko

Animals Hunted: Elk

This was a bow hunt for elk. There were plenty of elk! Although there were not a lot of what some might call trophies, (over 300 inches), this is a great hunt for someone like me looking for their first bull. We did see one 320 plus bull at fifty yards. I had three bulls within forty yards and missed a shot at a nice five by five. I passed shots on cows. If you go, get a bear tag because you will see some. The guides were great at planing and accomidating for any physical limitations a hunter might have. I had knee surgery this summer and was a little limited in how much I could climb. They still put me on bulls. They use a combination of spot and stalk and tree stand hunting. This was a great hunt and I plan on returning. The food is great and the staff treat you like the important client that you are. I would recomend this hunt to anyone looking for a bull.

Outfitter Review: Bar ZX Ranch - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Dean Lampton

Hunter: William Melton

Animals Hunted: Elk

First of all, just because an outfitter is recommended by NAHC and featured in magazine ads (for Polaris), does not mean they can provide a decent hunt. This was a lodge hunt - lodge is a misnomer, this was a garage closed in with some nast carpet and dusty sofas thrown in for good measure. The guides had as much hunting experiance as a New York cab driver. Some had never even hunted elk. They suggest they have exclusive acces to more than 23,000 acres, however 16,000 of it is National Forest with public access close by. I would not recommend this hunt to anyone.

Outfitter Review: Conrads High Country Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Conrad Wyngant

Hunter: Mike Curtis

Animals Hunted: Elk

Conrad drove 75 to 80 mph 2 1/2 hrs each way to put us in his hunting area. This in it self was rediculous. He cussed all in camp including the hunters to no end. Also according to our guide no scouting had been done in our area. All guides were new kids he had brought in the month before thinking they were at a guide school. They had only learned to call elk the week before at the kitchen table. I have all intentions of taking him to court and get my $2100 back.

Animals Hunted: Mule deer

My father and I participated in a hunt in 1997. We wanted to hunt mule deer only and that is the only tag we had. Out so called guide was only interested in showing us elk. We did see some nice elk but no decent mule deer. Rick was never around to try to make things roght by us. This is a poor hunt and will never go back.

Outfitter / Owner: Bob Ashley

Hunter: MARK MCCLOSKEY

Animals Hunted: ELK

I BOW HUNTED WITH THIS OUTFITTER AND HAD NUMEROUS BULLS CALLED IN BY MY GUIDE JASON. I ENDED UP SHOOTING A FIVE BY FIVE (MY FIRST ELK) AND WAS ELATED TO SAY THE LEAST. THIS BOW HUNT WAS DURING THE RUT AND IT WAS "THE NUTS" TO HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT BULLS SO CLOSE IN THREE DAYS OF HUNTING. THANKS JEFF AND BOB FOR A GREAT HUNT!!

Outfitter Review: Lazy-F-Bar Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: W.E.Guerrieri

Hunter: Randy Albright

Animals Hunted: Elk

I hunted with the Lazy F Bar six times now and everytime was a great experience. From the first time I hunted there they have treated me like old friends. The business is family owned and that is the type of atmosphere you get. They can accommadate any person to his/her physical condition to give you a opportunity to harvest an animal. They take care of everything for you, you only have to carry out your part by getting to where they want you be.This is a great hunt and very good people. Good Luck!

Outfitter Review: Garvey Bros. Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Stan Garvey

Hunter: William E. Wurth

Animals Hunted: Elk,Deer,Bear

Stan hunts in Unit 61 which is a draw unit - his area has excellent populations of elk, deer, and bear - all were seen at various times. Stan is also a rancher who is in the area all year long - he knows the area and how to hunt it. I have hunted with him several times and have never been disappointed. He hunts out of either a cabin or tents depending on the season. You will not regret booking a hunt with him.

Outfitter Review: Cabin Creek Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Tony Tingle

Hunter: R. Scott

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer

9 hunters in camp for 1st rifle season.Total of 5 elk sighted in 5 days of hunting by all hunters - they were all cows and all in one group.Mule Deer were plentiful but very few with any horns at all.Two deer were taken during the week - 1 spike and one forkhorn, both very small deer. The guides are part-timers taking vacation time from their real jobs and admitted they really didn't know what was "back there" on the outfitter's leased land, though they seemed to know the BLM land pretty well.Guide service consisted of a ride to an area, telling each hunter to "hunt here" and picking you up at dark. The outfitter talked a great story he didn't deliver on.In summary, this was everything that much-awaited western hunt shouldn't have been, and I don't see it ever being any better with this outfitter.

Outfitter Review: Phil's Bowhunting Adventures - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Phil Phillips

Hunter: Randy Caspersen

Animals Hunted: Antelope

It has been my experience as well as other hunts I have booked through Mr. Phillips, he makes himself readily available to all the hunters and makes every attempt to offer the best possible hunting experience for his clients. He is a hunter himself and realizes the importance of all aspects of the hunt. You won't find a more sincere, genuine outfitter.

Outfitter / Owner: Phil Phillips

Hunter: Carlton Baker

Animals Hunted: Antelope

Probably the best Antelope opportunity with a bow that I have been able to determine. Great opportunity for Pope and Young animals and in my experience, numerous shooting opportunities if you have the patience to sit in a blind. He and his wife Leslie run an outstanding camp and work to see that their clients are successful. Have hunted with them twice and will be going back in July.

Outfitter / Owner: Phil Phillips

Hunter: rob burnham

Animals Hunted: pronghorn

this was an outstanding hunt. even though the weather plays a big part in pronghorn hunting, and the weather during my hunt was not the best, these folks went out of their way to give us any opportunity possible to harvest an animal. i saw antelope every day and had 3 shot opportunities. there were several very well known bowhunters in camp to include phil phillips himself that were more than willing share their knowledge of bowhunting a long with some great hunting stories. this was an outstanding hunt that i would recommend very highly. the price of the hunt was well worth it, from the accomodations to the quality of game and guide experience. if you would like to see so photos of my hunt or have any questions about phil's bowhunting adventures please e-mail me.

I have hunted antelope and elk with Phil & Leslie Phillips five times. You couldn't ask for more accomodating hosts. I've seen lots of trophy quality game and when my hunts have not been successful, it's been my fault not theirs. They can't control the weather so cold and wet spells can create an extra challenge for antelope, but afterall, that's why it's called hunting and not a "gimmee". Outfitter / Owner: Craig Tomke

Hunter: Steve Bland

Animals Hunted: elk, mule deer

I archery hunted at the 4+2T Ranch during the last week of the Colorado archery season. Saw elk everyday, and often heard them bugling at night while we were in the cabin! I took a huge cow elk and a nice buck deer. It's a great place as you can drive to the ranch via 4WD then he hunts from there on horses. Craig has private land and public land to hunt, with the nearest public access over 4 miles away. we saw no other hunters during nine days of hunting! All other hunters in camp took elk also.

Hunter: Greg De Jong

Animals Hunted: Elk

We hunted early Nov. with guide Wes Clark. The weather was against us as temperatures were in the 60's each day. Wes never gave up though & was able to cow call to nice 5x5 bulls in. All the guides had great personalities, and the stories at camp were half the fun. Warm beds, hot showers, new trucks, plenty of food. If mother nature had given us 6 inches of snow, this would of been a perfect hunt. You will not find more hunt for the money !

we were to have approx 3000 acres of private property to hunt turned out to be 740. we were have a 2on 1 guided hunt. best we got to was 3 on 1. we were to have the entire ranch for our group of six, second day there 2 more hunters arrived, they didn't get to hunt because of tag problems so they just rode their fourwheeler and fished some of the lakes on the property. which didn't hurt our hunt sense we were now in the national forest with 10000 other hunters good luck and good hunting.

Animals Hunted: elk

There were 16 hunters in our group and not an animal was taken . Granted the weather was not in our favor since it was too warm ; however , the guides were very inexperienced and did nothing to help . To make matters worse on several occasions spooked game into the next county by firing at stones since they were bored . We were taken off our stands much too early and our complaints fell on deaf ears . A terrible hunt !! I've hunted 30 years all over the world and this was by far the worst .

Hunter: mark trusock

Animals Hunted: Elk, Mule Deer

My son and I went for the first gun season in Oct of 1999. It was the hunt of a lifetime. The people were great. The area was outstanding. Our cook made prime rib, roast stuffed turkey, ham, and cheesecake. He baked homemade bread everyday. We had a 2 on 1 hunt. Our guide was great. The campjack would start our fire a hour before they woke us up to warm our tent. We hunted from sunup to sundown. We did not take an animal but missed a few and had a wonderful time.

Outfitter Review: Sangre De Cristo Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Tom and Bill Schulze

Hunter: Mike Stanley

Animals Hunted: Bighorn Sheep

I hunted bighorn sheep in the Sangre De Cristo mountains of Colorado, which is a demanding hunt. I hunted archery, so I had to get close and this was not easy as these sheep are very wary. The biggest problem I had was with other hunters and hikers interfering with my stalks. My guide was young and inexperienced, but he did a great job. We saw alot of 7/8 to full curl rams and if I had been hunting with a rifle, I would not have had any problem harvesting a sheep. This was the most physically demanding hunt I have ever been on.

Animals Hunted: Elk

My father and i completed a 2 on 1 guided archery elk hunt during the first week of the 1999 season. Larry Amos and the whole crew at winterhawk outfitters provided us with a first class hunt. We seening 40+ elk every day for the first three days until the rain started and drove them into the dark timber. My father and i both had opportunities on bulls. Billy was the name of our guide and what a character. He was an excellent guide and became more of a buddy through the hunt which made the rainy days much more tolerable. I would recommend this outfit to anyone wanting a fun and fulfilling hunt.

hunts are from a cow camp that they rent out space so the camp is fair. But the thing that they get you on is that they are hunting in both unit 61 & 62, 61 is by draw only and 62 is open and very crowded. They make you put in a deposit and then if you don't draw for 61 they talk you into coming out to hunt 62 or they complain about the deposit being for either unit. thier was 12 hunters in camp, 9 in unit 62 no shots fired by anyone of then. three hunters drew 61 tags and all three got bulls of very poor quality concidering they were in a true trophy area. my guide had never been on that mountain until the day before season started, he told me. we rode around in a truck on gravel roads 90% of my guided hunt and were lost 9% of the time, 1% of the time the guide was "thinking of a game plan" please don't go with them you would be better off watching a video of a real hunt.

Outfitter Review: Texas Creek Outfitters - CO

Outfitter / Owner: Dave Butcher

Hunter: DeWayne Walling

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

Outfitter assured me that we would be located back in the mountains away from the crowds, in an area known for quality game. He said that since he lived in the area, he knew exactly where to locate the animals. We were put within 100 yards of a well travelled Forest Service road and in an area the Game Warden later told me was void of a deer herd. The outfitter assured me that he would check on us everyother day, if no game was seen, he'd move us. I haven't seen or been able to reach him since the day he dropped me off at the camp. My case is before the Colorado Outfitters Asso. board for possible disciplinary action against the outfitter.

Hunter: Danny L. East

Animals Hunted: Rocky Mountain Elk (cow)

Sammy is one hell of a guy and will not promise you anything but the opportunity to take an elk. The food was outstanding and was more than I expected. I gained weight instead of losing as I usually do when I go hunting. His area is in a draw so it will take a while to get to hunt with him. Give him a call at 1.717.569.1342[mobile] I don't get a thing out! of this except the satisfaction of putting someone on to a good outfit.
