First of all this wasn't my first time elk hunting, I've hunted public land for elk for five years and been successfully three of those years. This year we decided to go with a outfitter, Keys Outfitter. Joe Keys seemed like a nice guy on the phone and in person. But there was three guys hunting and Joe expected and wanted all three of us to hunt this 1000 acre private farm for 7 days. He also told me the private land we was hunting on land locked a bunch of public land. Nope there were hunters all around the fence line, nothing was land locked. We paid $1200 a piece, yes we got ripped off. I called to voice my displeasure twice and all he would say is keep hunting that 1000 acre farm. Needless to say we didn't see a single elk after 5 days and left 2 days early. Joe Keys ripped us off $3600 and I wanted to write something so it didn't happen to anyone else. Hunter beware!!!!!!

If you are planning a Colorado Elk Hunting Trip, you should avoid the Fishtail Ranch. Fishtail Ranch in Chama, NM offers Colorado hunts in unit 80 and 81. I recommend avoiding the Colorado hunts due to multiple reasons. The Camp services offered on the website are misleading; they reflect pictures of the game taking in the Chama, NM area but are advertised with the Colorado Hunt. In 2014, I was included in a group of 8 hunters. Between these 8 hunters and 4 guides, we never saw an Elk. More over when the weather turned, and it began snowing for 2 days, the guides were very reluctant to go to lower elevations, they insisted that the heard was in that area without any sightings or tracks in the snow for two days. We all understood it was NOT a guaranteed harvest hunt, but we expected to see sign or elk in the distance, not once on the 5 day hunt did a live animal get spotted, very little sign was seen in the form of tracks or droppings, etc... Second, the guides used the horses only to get the group to and from the spike camp, never were the horses saddled and used to move hunter to the hunting areas, in some cases the hunters had a two hour hike to the hunting areas. When the guides were ask about using the horses, they were reluctant and said the mountain terrain was too slippery. The use of the horses was advertised on their website, and we paid for their use, and did not receive the service. Lastly, the food that was served began with adequate quality and quantity, however about 2 days into the hunt, the camp cook became extremely lazy, additionally, they ran out of bottled water and didn’t even have water or make an effort to have hot water for coffee or oatmeal on the last day. We were told that we would have a live natural water source at the base camp, this was simply untrue. This group of hunters was a seasoned hunting group with elk experience in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, whitetail in multiple states, and even experience with African safaris.....that said, our group had seen what good outfitter should do. From the reviews I read while considering Fishtail Ranch prior to booking the hunt, I expected better overall service and elk hunting knowledge. I have even written Fishtail Ranch a professional and polite letter stating our concerns and lack of services. To date I have only received and "we will look into it email" with no further correspondance. If you are considering Fishtail Ranch save your time and money, there Colorado operation is a rip-off!!! The camp was great along with people in camp. Weather was warm so the elk were up at 12000 feet. Only our guide wouldn't ride a horse so we couldn't go after the elk. Our guide and every other guide in camp wouldn't go after them. The guides had us sit by open pastures were the ranchers cows ere feeding. They would call once or twice an hour, till 10;00 then they said elk are bedded down. So eat your lunch and take a nap. Only problem was he would sleep till 5;00 every afternoon. I paid for a guide to make an attempt to fined me an elk. Sad part is all there guides did the same thing. And where are the owners, so we could say something. They went home for the week and never came back. We heard 0ne elk bugle and our guide would not go after it. They also clam to have 160,000 acres to them selves , but this was public land and there were other hunters driving by on 4 wheelers. They might be better for gun hunts but don't know how to hunt with a bow. Guides were guys from other countries that were outfitters in there country. Do they really care if we are successful. Unless you are made of money don't waste your time here.

Gonzaa hunting adventures has screwed me twice with no land to hunt for a booked turkey hunt. They stranded me at the airport so I had to rent a car. Adam has promised things he just didn't deliver. He canceled after I had already bought licenses and airfare. He stopped answering phone calls and emails. Gonzaa hunting adventures has lied, stole money and left me with no land to hunt on. Gonzaa hunting adventures is the worst outfitter that I have ever had to deal with.

I really thought I picked a winner when I booked a 2012 Elk Hunt with C Bar Z Outfitters. The referances were good and the success rate was great. Through in the fact the price was right, and all appeared well. The guides were great, and the hunting land has Elk. So what could be my complaint? Well the Owner/Outfitter turned out to be the problem,. Good Ole Boy Larry, the owner, is not a could communicator, people person, or backs up what he says. If something happens that he does't like ( passing on a shot, or missing) then your put on the back burner. He got into some side shouting matches with several of the other hunters for various reasons. Now I'm not sure what problem he had with me, and son. However, it was very apparent he wanted nothing to do with us, This was comfimed on the last night at dinner, He shook everyone's hand except my son's. Oh yea when he shook mine he didn't even looked at me. He promised everyone an extra day or two if the hunt was not successful. However, this tunered out to be a lie Everyone in camp knew we were being ignored. Larry. simply does not know how to converse with the normal person. He actually told stories about other clients ( from previous hunts) who screwed up in his eyes. Finally, we have never heard back from him about anything since the hunt!!!!!!!!!. No we will not recommend or hunt with him again. He doesn't not need to be in the people business

Lack of animals was not the outfitters fault - Elk had not moved down to the lower levels yet . Saw very few elk - 6 or 7 cows ........ ended up taking a cow on the 3rd day . Hunted with a camera on the 4th day . Slept in on the 5th day , and went into town with the outfitter , to drop off the elk to be processedAside from the actual hunting , the experience was great - wilderness camping , riding the mules , hiking around the terrain , weather changed every day. Thin oxygen was the biggest challenge . Food was great , beds were comfortable , comeraderie of fellow hunters was great .

This outfitter kills some very big elk. I did not get my bull but that was no fault of theirs. Our guide had us in elk every day and some very nice bulls. I was hunting 2 on 1 guide and was paired up with another hunter by the outfitter. He was a nice guy and we cooperated all week. The ranches we were on were private and pretty small. We basically hunted two meadows all week. We'd go after the herd as they left the meadows at dawn but the guide was very careful not to pursue them in their bedding areas so they would stay on the ranch we could hunt. One property was about 100 acres and the other was about 1100. The guide would try to call them and the bulls were responsive and very vocal but no shots. We'd go back to the cabins mid morning and hang out in camp till about 3pm then go out to the meadows. This method worked and prevented spooking the elk so I was ok with it. My experience bow hunting elk for 15 years has been that pursuing them into their bedding areas is a low percentage play that spooks them out of the area pretty quickly. By mid week I was giving up my time with the guide to hunt a blind on the small meadow and I did get a chance at a 330 class bull but did not get him. We were housed in nice cabins but the one we hunters were assigned to was infested by pack rats. I had to clean rat turds off my bed and the floors had lots of droppings everywhere. After lights out they began scurrying around me and getting in my gear. The other hunter slept in his suburban. I packed up my bedding and went to the main cabin. The guide moved us into another cabin the next day.The guide was also our cook. We ate cereal and energy bars for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and usually salad, meat for supper. Nothing to write home about on the food but we weren't hungry. Last day the guide suggested we go back to town and he had an alfalfa field where he'd seen a nice bull. Since I had a plane to catch the next day I agreed. After seeing this area I'm pretty sure it was just a ruse to get the guide home a night early.

Animals Hunted: Elk
Myself and 2 friends booked a drop camp with Samuelson Outfitters for first rifle - Elk in 2012 on the Troublesome East Fork. Samuelson picked our cap location, and it was a good location. We did see some Elk the first coupple of days then nothing. The biggest issues we had with them is that they did not explain all of the pricing up front and it cost us. Several of the horses were nags. One kept going down to the ground on its belly at night occuring when we were traveling up and down steep trails. Luckly the rider on that paticular horse is a professional horse rider and he was able to pull her up every time she hit the ground. I would not have been so lucky. Samuelson was days behind on every estimate. They were a day behind to check on us, causing us to lose hunting time, and a day behind to pack us up causing us to lose work time. They had no means of communication with the camps so you were on your own in some remote mountains as there was little cell phone service and they dident use radios. In one of their other drop camps a bear had to be shot after destroying the hunters supplies and refusing to leave his camp, etc. He was alone and out of contact with the outfitter and lucky to be alive after some cold nights. His hunt was essentially ruined. When they never showed to pick us up at the end of the trip I climbed a moutain to get cell phone service. I got through to Ms. Samuelson, who after a long conversation, suggested we walk out on foot that evening and leave our supplies. It was a 4 hour horse back ride up and down mountains and it was 4PM when she suggested we walk out and leave our gear. It owuld have taken at least 8-10 hours to hike out at night so we opted against it and re-set up our camp for another night. The outfitter showed up around 5:30PM to get us just as we finished setting up camp and had to tear it all down again. All-in-all a mess and waste of money and hunting season.

As far as I'm concerned, this hunt could not have been much better. I found everything from start to finish to be exemplary! I specifically wanted a traditional pack-in (by horseback) wilderness hunt, with a reasonable opportunity for an average-to-above-average bull elk. That is exactly what I got. The owners of Winterhawk, Larry & Laura Amos, were congenial, friendly and efficient. The backcountry camp manager, Bob, clearly had enormous experience in wilderness hunting and made every effort to insure that hunting opportunities were matched to each hunters' expectations and abilities. The guide service was 2-on-one, and mine was provided by John Williams, who has many, many years of experience in this region. All of the Winterhawk staff that I encountered were extremely courteous and helpful--extending from the Packers & Guides to the Cooks to the Campjack. The meals provided by Karl B. the backcountry Cook were the finest I have ever had in any camp. There were 5 other hunters in my camp, and by the luck of the draw, all were easy companions. The camps were clean, well provisioned and comfortable. If I had a complaint--and I don't--it would be that the hunt ended too soon. Unanticipated personal business concerns necessitated that I take the first bull that met my minimum standards and then cut the remainder of the trip short. I tagged out with an "average"--for the area--5x5-- bull after only 6 hours of hunting. Better bulls were seen by my companions later in the trip. Only one real note of concern---if you are getting yourself into their basecamp make sure that you have a very high clearance 4x4 vehicle. Leave your running boards at home :) The other caution to potential clients is that the physical conditioning aspects of this hunt are exactly as described by Winterhawk--before the hunt--be in shape. I'm 60, I work fairly hard for a living and I live at altitude so I didn't have much trouble. If you neglect the recommended conditioning you'll regret it.Any hunt is what you make of it, and even had I not been successful in killing a bull, I would have still considered my time spent in this camp as a positive experience.I was very pleased with every aspect of my hunt and would not hesitate to recommend Winterhawk to other hunters

1) EXECUTED CONTRACT AGREEMENT WAS TO PROVIDE COMPLETE DROP CAMP amenities, and local topographical maps. Verbal contract agreement was to have SCO provide one sleeping tent, latrine, haul water to camp, and mainly to provide fresh and up to date intel on elk movements in the hunting area.Additional VERBAL agreement to one hunter (my wife) in the party was to take her to private land for a day hunt. This particular agreement was stated many times during months prior to arrival in camp, as well as in the presence of Steve Martinez's wife Pat, and two other hunters, one in our party and one repeat hunter. We are experienced hunters, with most of our gear and did not need cooking tent or gear. We made it clear we did not know the area, and we were paying for a good sleeping tent and fresh information on game in the area. When we arrived at camp site, we found tent not completely set, and no latrine set up.We had to set up our own latrine then complete setting up the tent. When Steve arrived he stated elk were right behind camp no other scouting was needed and no maps were provided. We had topo maps of most of the mountain, but he stated we should hunt an area not on maps and he would return with maps. NEVER DID. He also stated he would return to hunt with us a day as well as send one of his guides up to give us new game info. NEVER DID.He stated he would return one day to take my wife to private land, describing the lay of the land and the elk thereon very vividly, only to go bear hunting for himself that day. PROMISE BROKEN LIED TO MY WIFEThe elk sign right behind camp was not fresh at all, was prior to archery season opening. We had weather one day which the tent leaked getting most of our gear wet. He did pay for us to catch a room over an hour from the hunting area for that night and provided dinner at their home. We lost a day reorganizing our gear and drying. The tent was a new Cabela's Outfitter tent without a rain fly.During our hunt we continued to exchange text regarding new areas to hunt as well as taking my wife on the promised hunt, he stated he was busy, that things were not going as planned below and would try to get back up to meet with us, he went to work.We continued to express our disappointment, and request more info on game locations but to no avail. We got into elk two days taking one calf.During our stay at camp Forest Ranger paid us a visit to inform us we were not camped on a legal road/camp-site and he should demand us to relocate our camp elsewhere. However we only had two days left to hunt and he would let our location be, he took down the Outfitters name and address for reference.Upon completion of our hunt, we left tent and camp site cleaner than our arrival. We met with Steve on day of departure and discussed our disappointment with his services.Later in October 2012 I contacted Steve requesting he make some sort of compromised arrangement for the following year due to his failure. He stated he would give us an answer by Thanksgiving. NEVER HAPPENED.Thanksgiving one other member of the party contacted him requesting answers, Steve sent text stating he would contact me. NEVER HAPPENED He then phoned Steve, left message, NEVER RESPONDED!I have been associated with, hunted with outfitters for nearly 4 decades, worked as a guide in NM in the late 80's and I clearly recognized he over booked his hunters and could not provide for us, the lowest paid camp what he promised. I have a text from him stating he had to take care of his higher paying clients as a priority over our camp. He was contacted on Facebook advising we were preparing to write a review, regarding his breach of agreement and poor performance, never heard a word from him.We paid him $3,000.00 for a tent half way set up no latrine and no intel, and got lies. He lied to my wife, did not provide by contract the services required, and did I say lied to my wife? The unit clearly has potential for repeat visits, just not with SCO. As he is not a man of his word.

I’d like to thank Tim for my family’s 2012 Kansas Whitetail hunt. This was our first hunt with an outfitter and it turned out to be a great experience. Right from the start Tim made us feel at ease and got us started off on the right foot. He asked what we expected and filled us in on what to expect. Tim treated us with respect and professionalism at all times, as if we were professional trophy hunters. His stands were well placed on the properties with all safety features included. He shared his information as to what the deer movements might be and advised us where and when to place ourselves and left the rest up to us. I can not say enough good things about Tim and Red Dog, just that if you would like to hunt Whitetail in Kansas, contact Tim and he will do everything he can to be sure you have an enjoyable hunt, short of bagging the big buck for you, although he does aim to please..

Tim Clark is wonderful and a hell of a good guide. We drove from michigan to come and try out a semi guided rifle hunt we had never done anything like this before. My father and brother really wanted me to go so it would be a family hunt. I am so glad that i did when we arrived tim was there to meet and greet us. We went over our goals on what we were after for our dream whitetail. He took us around and showed all that great land he has and where he thought would be the best stands for us. Tim asked us many time are you happy with this spot. We had my father in the best stand hoping he would have the time of his life and he DID. Shooting a big ten point the 2nd night of our hunt. Tim told us he would have a chance to pull the trigger within 3 days and he did. Tim then moved my brother to the same stand a day later because the deer were there and he shot a big 8. So now its my turn i was then fully guided tim was doing everything he could to get me a shooter. The fourth day in the evening luck had turned around for me saw 10 bucks and 5 does nothing i wanted to pull the trigger on then right before dark i looked over to my right to see 2 shooters. I could not get the shot i wanted to take so i didnt pull the trigger. I did not want to make a bad shot so i waited patiently and never saw them on the fifth day. Tim told us we could stay another day so i could have another shot at it. I had enough i watch my dad a the buck of his dreams and also my brother that was worth it all to me. Tim was great, his goal is to make you have time of your life we will be back thank you so much for every thing.Casey

The three of us had been wanting to go on an out of state hunt for whitetails for several years but it is so dang expensive. Then my wife was searching around and found Tim at Red Dog Outfitters. We contacted him for prices and details and he was quick to respond, very informative and helpful with the tons of questions we had. Now being from Michigan, and never hunting out of state we did not know how to go about getting our licenses or what to expect in general. Tim went above and beyond the call of duty with answering phone calls and a ton of emails. He made sure we got our licenses in on time, got all the necessities and helped point us in the right direction for lodging. We had the hunt of a lifetime, we saw a ton of deer as promised as he had been trail caming them all year so we had an idea of what to expect. He stayed in touch throughout the year right up to leaving for the 1000 mile trip. He met us on the property, showed us around and put us in the right stands to see the monsters we ended up shooting. He is a top notch guy whom we can now call a great friend. We will definitely be hunting with him for many years to come because he is reasonably priced, honest and will deliver more than promised. Thanks again Tim, Red Dog and the others whom help make this a trip we will never forget and many more to come. We cannot express enough thanks and gratitude for being so honest, there are not enough people out there like you. Ehren Jones

I was extremely excited when I scheduled my Kansas whitetail rifle hunt with Red Dog Outfitters, but as the season approached, my excitement turned to concern. The rut was winding down, the moon was full and daily high temperatures would be in the low 70's for the duration of my trip. Not ideal whitetail hunting conditions to say the least! Luckily my concerns were unfounded. Thanks to Tim and the outstanding leases he's procured, I managed to see deer in every stand I sat in, including two of the biggest whitetail bucks I've ever seen while hunting (one of which I was fortunate enough to bag)! I couldn't be happier with my Red Dog experience and will definitely be hunting with Tim again in the future! If you're considering booking a hunt with Red Dog Outfitters, I would be happy to share my experiences with you, so please feel free to call Troy at 303-881-8198. Thanks again Tim!

This was my first hunt in Kansas and, I had a blast seeing a ton of deer with low hunting pressure. I passed on several 140" deer and saw some 150" deer a little out of range. This was my first guided hunt and I must say that Tim Clark truly wants you to capitalize on a deer of your choice. Our group discussed the stand situation with Tim and the only thing was the shooting rails on the bow stands and he understood so he will accommodate our needs next year. The experience was great! My dad has been to Illinois, Canada, and Texas and tells me that this is the most action of all the places he has been. I did come home empty handed in November 2012 (my own fault) but, you can bet on seeing me back in November 2013. I have hunted with a lot of outfitters for whitetail deer. Canada, Illinois, Texas, and Missouri. This is the best bowhunt that I have been on. The amount of quality animals was good. The amount of deer seen was excellent. We had 4 hunters and all 4 had shot opportunities at quality deer. Tim worked hard to get us on good deer even though it was semi-guided. This was my best hunt ever! My son and I booked this hunt not really knowing what to expect. This was my sons first hunt with a bow and first time in a treestand. When we got to the farm we were met by the land owner and shown the stands Tim Clark wanted us to start in. The first night I saw more bucks then does. The trend continued throughout the hunt. The best part of the hunt was the stand setup's. Tim had multiple double stands set. That allowed my son and I to be in the same tree and see each other shoot our deers. I was able to rattle in a buck for my son and he made a perfect shot dropping his first buck. I was able to take my best whitetail to date. Neither of the bucks that we took were the biggest that we had seen on the farm. My son had never shot a buck so he took his first opportunity. I took the first opportunity at the biggest buck I have ever had. There were much bigger bucks but we chose to take these ones knowing we could have waited for bigger bucks. It was a long time coming for the both of us. We have already booked hunts for Kansas in 2013 and are planning on hunting back in Lamar, Co in 2014 with Red Dog! My son had a much better shot than me and the coyotes got to my deer before I found him. Sorry for the picture.

I would like to thank Tim Clark for a fantastic hunt. Starting with the Lodging which was clean and well equipped. About Tims honesty. He said he had Deer and put me in a place that had Deer. There was no misleading bull crap. I hunted Friday night and saw a lot of Deer but no Bucks that were up to my standards. Tim told me to stay in that stand all day the next day and at 6:30 that night by Buck came in. It was a very impressive Buck. I'm not a very good judge of Deer but it was the largest Deer I've seen on the hoof that was shootable. So I shot it and had a good hit but waited a hour as Tim suggested before tracking the Deer. Tim showed up and we tracked the Deer for about 250 yards. Tim taught me how to track a Deer like a professional. He was very patient and I learned a lot. I had no idea that I had just shot a 143 class Deer, which will make the Pope and Young record book! I think Tim was more excited than me. Tim did exactly what he said he would do which was get me into the Deer and the rest was up to me. Tim is a very honest and professional guide. I plan to return next year and put my trust in Tim again. Rick Karbowski

I can honestly say I was totally impressed with Tim Clark from the first time I spoke with him on the phone. He informed me that they had quite a few deer between their different properties, I figured this was typical outfitter talk. He followed up the phone call with a ton of trail camera pictures to affirm what he told me over the phone. Tim was always available by phone anytime I had questions, and never made me feel like I was bothering him. The day of my hunt came and I was highy excited. Tim met me the day before to show me where I would be hunting, for a semi-guided hunt it felt like a guided hunt with the exception of me hunting by myself, which was exactly what I wanted. I had 5 days set aside to make it happen. 2 hours after I got into the tree stand I was covered up in deer, I was absolutely shocked as I didnt expect to see this many deer right away. Being a meat hunter and not a trophy hunter I decided to go ahead and take the shot on my first night. This deer was less than 20 yards and provided the perfect broadside shot. After the perfect double lung shot, I had accomplished what I set out to do, and that was harvest a deer with my bow. The properties Red Dog has are some of the best i've seen. The tree stands are placed in perfect positions with plenty of shooting lanes trimmed. When I called Tim to tell him I harvested a deer, he was just as excited as I was!! He truly cares about his clients and understands how important it is to help them be successful. The tree stands were all equiped with safety ropes, I forgot my Hunter Safety vest at home and was a little concerned about it. Tim had an extra one back at his lodge and offered it to me, the lodge was top notch as well!! I cant say enough good things about Tim and Red Dog Outfitters. I cant wait to come back!! I booked for 2013 before I even went home from my hunt. Thanks again Tim!!

Tim Clark, the owner and guide for Red Dog Outfitters was absolutley the best. Before I booked the hunt we were in phone and email contact. He provided lots of photos from his many, many trail cams showing all the deer inhabiting the area. I did some research on other outfitters and settled on Tim because of his knowledge of the area and of the deer and their movements and habits, and also because of his enthusiasm. I made a good decision. The hunt was a whole lot of fun. My expectations were certainly met. I saw a number of deer.....some does and some nice bucks that would look great on my fireplace. I had several bucks within shooting range and had my bow at full draw and the adrenalin pumping. One buck I chose not to take the shot because of a branch between me and him that I was afraid might deflect my arrow. The other buck was pretty nervous and might have winded me because he bolted out of my range before I could get a shot off. I would absolutely recommend Red Dog Outfitters. That part of Kansas has a lot of big bucks, whitetail and mulie both and Tim has some great properties for his clients to hunt on. I have already booked a hunt for 2013 with RDO and also will be doing some turkey hunts with RDO because we sure saw and heard a lot of turkeys. Great hunt and good job Tim, and thanks for a great time!! See you on my next hunt!!

Tim Clark offered a DIY hunt on a working farm in western Kansas for a good value. My son and I had never used an outfitter for our hunting trips and Tim was prompt and friendly with his correspondence and willingness to accomodate our needs. He was confident we would get into birds and suggested several areas to investigate. He followed up with phone calls to ensure we were pleased with the quality of the area and the cabin. Overall, Tim is a great person to deal with and we both hope to book with Red Dog Outfitters again. Oh yeah, we got into turkeys every time we left the cabin.

This was my first hunt with an outfitter. It has been a great experience. Leading up to the hunt, Tim Clark sent me a map of the farms I could hunt in Kansas. The map had locations for blinds to be setup near turkeys. Tim stayed in touch with me during my hunt making sure I was on turkeys. On day 2, he moved me to a different farm to give me the best chance to harvest a bird and it worked. I got my best Tom. Tim has kept in touch with me after the hunt. I would recommend Red Dog Outfitters and am hunting again with Tim for Deer in Colorado this November.

This hunt was awesome,Tim has thousands of acres of prime turkey habitat that are plentiful with birds. upon our arrival that evening, seeing birds and hearing the Toms gobbling in the background just got our blood pumping & we couldn't wait to get out there the next morning. Being my first Turkey hunt and not knowing much about it, Tim filled us in on bird behavior and what to expect on the hunt. We seen tons of birds that next day and could not believe all the deer we saw as well. We were able to fill both of our tags with two large 9" bearded toms. Tim is very concerned that you are getting the most out of the hunt and will go that extra mile to make sure that you do. If you would like a great quality hunt and for sure get your moneys worth if not more then book a hunt with Tim Clark at Red Dog Outfitters. Thanks Tim see ya soon.

Tim put us on a property in Colorado that had little, if any pressure. The landowner was very friendly and helpful. We scouted the property the evening before our hunt. We were hearing many gobblers in the area and saw one large tom looking for a roost right at dark. We set up the blind that night and had 2 gobblers in the bag by 8am the next morning. We saw 4 other gobblers on the property that morning at a distance, as well. I would surely hunt this property again if given the opportunity.

Red Dog Outfitters World Class in Colorado Over my years a tradition was set in my family was to take a hunting trip as part of vacation. Like most hunters my soul is relaxed when I am out in the wild seeking various game. If you want an adventure and world class/5 star experience look no further then red dog outfitters. I had the pleasure hunting with Tim on his Lamar Colorado property; never did I have a better experience with a guide then with red dog outfitters. I hunted with them twice and it was money well spent. My dove hunt was with out question the best I had ever. The shot opportunity was magnificent , my hunt personally I had over 80 shots in 4 hours and both (my father and I ) had over twenty killed. I was impressed with the young guides help with cleaning the birds and knowledge they had (Matt and Trey). With the deer hunt Tim put us on deer and on property (Lamar CO). I had the time of my life . Frustrated by years of getting skunked, Tim turned it around by his scouting knowledge and put me on the hunt of life time. It was Monday October 24th 645 am when I spotted my trophy class deer with scored 123 sci .Tim will make sure that you are happy and will take care of you. Hunting with them is like hunting with your family or your best friend, which is what, makes them unique. If you’re looking for an outfitter that will give you a world class hunt and not mortgages your house, I proudly suggest you got with Red dog outfitters.

This was my first whitetail hunt ever. I didnt know what to expect, or really what I was doing to be honest. I Met Tim (Red Dog Outfitters) at the sportsmans show in 2011. After a breaf conversation with him i decided to book a hunt. He kept me informed on the differn't deer throughout the year, as well as let me come hang stands and get familar with the hunting area. Well Novemeber came and boy was my mind blown the first morning in the stand. I passed on 15 differn't bucks the first day. There were deer everywhere. I wanted a 130+ buck so I patiently waited and passed on several bucks over the next few days. Well, lets just say I missed my shot at a 150 inch buck on the fifth day. I had a great time and learned alot from Red Dog Outfitters. I would highley reccomend booking with them if you want a quality hunt at a fair price.

I am very satisfied with Tim Clark and Red Dog Outfitting. I used RDO for both Turkey and Pheasant this year and my hunt met every expectation and agreement that was made with Tim. Tim goes out of his way to make sure everything is going as agreed and that I am getting the most out of my hunt. I was successful on both of my hunts and the landowners that Tim worked out for me were equally as accommodating and friendly. Tim is very trustworthy and if he says he is going to do something, then you can count on it. I find his prices competitive and provide real value for an excellent hunt. Five Stars!

CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW IMPRESSED WE WERE WITH THIS OPERATION. TIM IS THE ULTIMATE PRO. OUR INTRESTS WERE HIS PRIMARY CONCERN. WE HAD ORIGINALLY BOOKED A SNOW GOOSE HUNT LAST YEAR, AND TIM CALLED TO TELL US THAT THERE WERE NOT ALOT OF GEESE IN THE AREA. SO HE GLADLY REBOOKED US IN THE FALL WHEN HE THOUGHT THE HUNTING WOULD BE BETTER. HE WAS RIGHT. MOST OUTFITTERS WOULD OF TAKEN OUR MONEY AND TAKEN US ON A LOUSY HUNT, BUT TIM MADE IT RIGHR WIYH US. I WOULD "HIGHLY" RECOMMEND RED DOG OUTFITTERS TO ANYONE. BILL

I have hunted whitetail for the past 2 seasons with Red Dog and had great success both hunts. I saw plenty of deer in the realtively short time I spent in the field. Tim with Red Dog is an extremely knowledgable guide and was able to put me in several great locations on the property. He was spot on with the location and habits of the local deer. The property is excellent for whitetail as well as a nearby river holding plenty of waterfowl. Tim is a great guy to work with and I would definately recommend Red Dog.Their hospitality and service were also exceptional.

Hunted 2 days. Initial call with Tim went well in terms of scheduling as we only had a few weekends available. Tim was able to fit us in which helped out. We had bid on a 2 day hunt with Red Dog outfitters through a Ducks Unlimited banquet (Thanks Red Dog for supporting D.U.!), and were excited to hunt southeast Colorado as we had heard their were good flights on the Arkansas. Tim set us up with one of his young guides (Trey). Trey was a good fit for us as he was personable, easy going, and had a good sense of humor. He took time to help us with our calling techniques and shared tips for calling in the blind which was helpful. Trey was very knowledgeable and unlike many guides I have been around, did not possess a "mightier than thou" ego...Had a quick am goose hunt and shot 7 geese with 2 major groups coming in. Slow morning with only 2 groups coming over but we took advantage. Plenty of decoys and supplies made for an attractive spread. Afternoon duck hunts in a cut corn field ended up being "epic". I have watched video before of hundreds of ducks flying into a field but never been part of it until this weekend. In this case, it was several thousand (no joke) that came in to our field over an hour time frame. It was truly a 2 day hunt we will never forget. By the way, Trey had scouted this field several days earlier so he knew were they were feeding. Tim and Patty (owners), were very humble people who have a servant mentality. They wnat to eensure thier clients have a fun time. Lunch was a pleasant surprise of wild venison burgers and Brats along with sausage and cheese. All in, a quality 2 day hunt. Planning to take my 2 young boys back for a late season hunt...

Tim at Reddog has the perfect setup for Colorado whitetail deer. I only had a doe tag, but after 20 minutes in the stand, i was wishing i had a buck tag. I had seen a big 8 chasing a hot doe that got my heart pounding. While i had my chances to fill my tag, i was on a limited schedule and the wind kept me from the stand one morning. I had seen plenty of deer from my stand but being a rookie stand hunter, i miss judged yardage and clean missed my doe. The clubhouse Reddog has is perfect for taking a break from hunting with a bigscreen tv an a nice wood stove. It also has a bird cleaning station, and a great place to cook some lunch. I would reccomend Reddog to anyone wanting a Colorado hunt at a very good price. To me, just seeing the number of deer i had seen was worth the whole hunt. He has some great bucks that im sure ill be going after soon.

I was hunting with my dad and two of his friends. I was promised upon booking that the outfitter would set up a privacy screen in our tent since I am a girl. Once we got to camp, I never got that. Also, our tent would not shut all the way and was never fixed although we complained. The "restroom" was a hole dug in the ground with a toilet seat, all under a tarp thrown over a rope. My head brushed this tarp every time I used the restroom. I am used to pretty rough camps, but this was gross. The food was horrible. We had dried hamburgers the first night, some sort of sausage one night, sloppy joes, and finally chili (the best meal). They ran out of water the 4th day. We were promised sodas and got water/kool-aid/coffee. My father is disabled and asked if he would be able to do this hunt. The outfitter assured him he could. My dad and his friend (also disabled) spent the hunt seated in a small meadow watching the leaves fall. I did harvest a very nice bull, but had to work for it, which was fine. The outfitter sent out a health questionnaire before the hunt. My dad mentioned his heart condition and diabetes. Nothing was done to accommodate these. I don't know why they even asked us. The outfitter went down the mountain every day and my dad asked for sugar free syrup, which was promised but never delivered. Out of 8 hunters, 2 harvested animals. All of our dealings with this outfitter have been negative. I would never recommend him.

If you give Ole Larry money; you have just completed his part of the contractual obligation.I spent 30 years in the Military and always take a man at his word... Can't do that with Larry; he WILL bite you!! My brothers-in-law, their hunting buddies, my son, and I, signed up for an early 2010 drop camp elk hunt. Right after I sent Larry my deposit and paperwork. I was hospitalized with a perforated colon. I informed Larry's wife, Laura, of the situation and that it was doubtful that I would be able to make the hunt. It took all summer to heal with surgery during hunting season. We met the minimal manning criteria for the hunt and at that time my son asked Larry about my deposit. Larry stated that it would depend on how good HIS season was. Apparently it was not very good as he has never offered to put it toward another hunt or even partial repayment after his expenses. There were few elk seen and even fewer heard and they were told it was "THE HEART OF THE RUT!!". After the season I sent Larry a letter along with a letter from my surgeon and included the discharges from my hospital stays via certified mail. Larry would not sign for it, and it was ultimately returned. I then sent it regular mail, it never came back, and I never heard from Larry. Now ole Larry probably considers himself a hardnosed businessman; BUT, if I were one of his neighbors, I would be counting my livestock on a regular basis.

We also had two spike bulls within range but they are illegal to take. The tents are comfortable and the food was GREAT. This is a hunt and not a slaughter. You will not see several Elk a day like you see on TV shows. This is real hunting in a huge free roaming state forest. We never seen another hunter while we were out there. If your looking for an outfitter that will give 100% then look no further. I will be going back again this fall for archery and again in 2012 for 1st rifle season.

Outfitter Review: Private Land Bucks And Bulls - Pueblo CO
Outfitter / Owner: Rick Sears

Beware! Beware! Be very wary of this outfit if you’re thinking of a hunt with them. They outfit in areas west of Trinidad, Walsenburg and Pueblo and their main selling point is they have many ranches and thousands of acres leased so they can put you where the game is. They advise which area to apply in – if you draw that area and there’s game that’s where you hunt – if no game you turn in your tag for a refund and hunt on a landowner tag where there is game. Sounds good……. Last April I booked a mid November hunt for a guaranteed opportunity at a 310 or better bull – not guaranteed kill, just opportunity. If I didn’t get an opportunity I got a discount. I could always kill something smaller. I was told to apply for unit 581 and subsequently drew. I sent Richard Sears, who I dealt with, a copy of my application and deposit in April. When I had no communication from them whatsoever by September, I began calling their cell and office numbers and leaving messages with no response. Then I received a contract signed by someone named Stephen Flowers as the outfitter. The contract did not contain the specifics of my hunt. I then sent them a sharp e-mail and finally got a call from Sears a week later. Lots of excuses for the lack of communication –been hunting, lost in mail , etc. When asked who actually had the outfitter’s license he said “don’t need one, don’t want one”! After another couple of weeks dealing with someone at his office I finally got the contract straighten out. Two weeks before I was to meet them in Pueblo the day before my hunt started I e-mailed them that I was leaving home (driving from Houston) a week early to vacation a bit and visit my son in Boulder. I gave them all my contact numbers. In Pueblo the day before we were to meet I had a message to call Sears and did. The gist of the conversation was that because of the warm, dry weather there was no game. Why had I applied in unit 581 – you told me to. OK, let’s turn in the tag for a refund and hunt elsewhere on a landowner tag – there aren’t any. He said I’d be lucky to see a legal bull much less a 310, and finally offered to refund my deposit if I didn’t want to hunt at all. I accepted, and drove home the next day without even getting to the hunting area. In summary: communication with them is a major problem, the guy you deal with doesn’t have an outfitter’s license, all their leases must be at lower elevations if they don’t have any game in November due to a warm, dry season, what happened to the land owner tags? I called some of their references and heard some good things but you’ll get a double thumbs down from me!!! I’m 67 and lost a hunting season and made a 2500 mile trip for f*** all!

I enjoyed the hunt although I didn't pull the trigger. Camp was great and food was exceptional. Really enjoyed the other guys from N.Y. Kelly, who is the son of David Slater the outfitter is a great guide. He worked very hard to find elk. Weather was a problem in that we needed snow to get the elk migrating from the higher elevations. This is a physical hunt as the terrain is steep and at an elevation of 9,400+. Beautiful part of Colorado! Saw some cows, but no bulls. The only negative is that I signed (as per contract) for a 7 day hunt. When I arrived at camp David said that he lost my contract and gave me another one to sign that read 5 days. That ticked me off, but after 5 days I was worn out, and dead tired. However, all things considered I'd book again.

if I can save 1 group from falling victim to winterhawk outfitters i'll feel that this review was worthwhile, the only honest thing Larry said was he was going to steal the rest of our money. We booked our hunt in March, after sending our deposit communication failed to exist, when inquiring as to where we might be huntig as to purchase maps.we were told that larry needed to wait so as to best place us due to the weather and the tags that we had.We were pigeon holed in the back of the valley with 2 ft.of crunchy snow after the animals in the area had already migrated to lower elevation areas where they had drop camps that were removed as to make another area for his guided hunts or higher paying customers.we had to make our own fire wood with a bow saw that you'd use to trim fruit trees &a axe with a broken head, not a nice prospect when it's snowing &freezing. To top it off there was another drop camp less than a mile from ours, he talks about all the area that he outfits on and the camps from 11,000ft to 9000ft to deal with the conditions, but I didn't see anything but other hunters. There were 5 hunters w/11 tags 5 bull tags 4 buck tags & 2 cow tags,we hunted hard for six days and onlythe hunters with cow tags were able to have any success, while 2 of us never even saw an animal, only 1 bull was spotted but was never close enough for an encounter.

I have hunted with Outwest Guides for early season, high country muzzleloader muleys three times now. Each time they have done a good job with their camps, horses and overall accommodations. This trip, our guide Dan, worked hard to help me and my hunting buddy Steve try to locate a shooter buck. Based on past experiences we were defining shooter as 180+ and truly hoping for 200. Unfortunately the effects of the hard winter of 2007 can still be seen. We saw a lot less deer overall and only two bucks in the 180 range, nothing in that top end 200 range. We hunted hard, covering over 40 miles on horseback in 6 days. We had a fun trip overall and saw some elk and mountain goats along the way. We saw some of the most beautiful mountain country you will ever see. I have no gripes with the outfitter, they did their part but the big bucks just weren't there.

Animals Hunted: Elk
This was my 3rd year archery hunting with Golden Eagle Outfitters. My first year (2007) I shot a 340 class bull. The next year (2008) I hunted the Red Top Ranch and had a great hunt even though I didn't harvest an animal. On the 2009 hunt we were on the Red Top again but this time the ranch owner had moved in a lot of cattle which pushed the elk to the next ranch. After 5 fruitless days of a 6 day hunt, I and the other two hunters finally tossed in the towel one day early because there were just no elk to hunt. It became obvious that no preseason scouting had been done on the ranch and Donny didn't know about the cattle. There were 3 of us hunters on this not so cheap hunt and we wasted our money. Before we left, Donny promised to make it right with each one of us this year (2010). Since then, the economic climate has changed and so has his promises of making it right with us. Now we are down to a public land hunt that we have to draw for and it probably takes 2 points. That puts us in 2013 plus there is another outfitter involved. Needless to say, thanks but no thanks, I don't need him for a hunt like that. For this level of hunt and being a return customer, I expected more. If you look at the photo gallery on the website, you will notice a lack of elk for 2009. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. I understand times are hard right now. Tell me that money wise you just can't swing it, I respect that. Just don't make promises that you can't keep. All 3 of us held off on making plans for hunts this fall because we thought we were going back. Now we are having to scramble. I think Donny means well but things spiraled out of his control. My advice, ask lots of questions about the ranch you're hunting and make sure they have scouted it. He has good accommodations and great guides but they need to have the animals to guide for.t

This is a relatively new outfitter, but he has a great deal of experience in guiding with others. He has a lease on a high quality ranch near Meeker (not overgrazed). He uses the ranch house as lodge, and it is very comfortable. The guides are his family and a few friends. I don't know where he found the cook, but she was the very best--unbelievable meals. We hunted early morning and again late afternoon. We did easy spot and stalk hikes and sat over water holes. My hunt was with a ranch license, so we stayed on the ranch. I think later seasons can move into the nearby public ground. I saw elk everyday. Had an opportunity with a small 6 x 6, but got too smart for myself and moved to the wrong position. Later I took a cow elk, for the meat. All hunters got their elk except for the guy who missed 2 elk. I wouldn't book the hunt for a big elk, but this is a great hunt at a very affordable price. You'll have lots of fun. Lanny Schwartz

Hunter: Michael Vaneman
Animals Hunted: Elk
We hunted Second Rifle with Bull and Elk tags. although we did fill one Bull tag (a nice 5X5), the sightings of Elk were sparse. Never even saw a cow in five days. But the weather and time of year contributed to this. It was National Forest and hard hunted previous to our arrival. I can not say enough about the staff and the their hospitality, They are all great folks. My Dad and I never hunted in CO before, and it was such beautiful country, the experience was one I will cherish the rest of my life. I would definetly go back and use Bar-H again!
Outfitter Review: Conrads High Country Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Conrad Wygant
Hunter: Dr William Paronish
Animals Hunted: Elk
I've rifle hunted with this outfitter multiple times and have gotten a bull elk every year-there are pictures of my last bull on the web site and video-big old 6x6 herd bull. I've been elk hunting for more than 20 years in every western state. This hunt is my favorite. Conrad is a character but he has a very good heart and runs a top notch outfit. This is not a wilderness hunt as you stay in excellent accomodations including a shower nicer than my home shower but regardless you are expected to be a hunter and to work hard. You drive to hunt locations each day and some drives especially to some prime draw areas can be a pretty good drive. The country hunted is beautiful elk habitat but as with any open range hunting you have to find the elk. As with any elk hunt the elk numbers can be affected by weather conditions, other hunters and rut related behavior. Each year I've hunted there I had different challenges but with the help of the outfitters "gut feelings" and the guides talents I've always found and harvested a bull elk. Planning on going back in 2010 and will take my son on his first elk hunt with me. I suggest you take advantage of the Gunnison area if you hunt here before and/or after the hunt and the flyfishing is great!

Andy and Trent from Silver spur outfitters were beyond helpful as my wife and two little boys were along on the hunt and they included them in everything. We will be hunting with both of these outfitters in the future.

If your thinking of booking a mt lion hunt don't book with anyone else but Fred Wallace. He's a 3rd generation hounds man he know his lions. I'm from a small town in southeastern Indiana and 28 cats have been killed by Fred in the past 12 years from this area. If he has snow you will kill a cat, to me that says it all Quentin Bischoff 812-212-4455
Outfitter Review: Sunset Canyon Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Curt Weimer
Hunter: Cory Morrison
Animals Hunted: Elk
Comparing to recent years and their discription this outfitter has made a complete turn around. It really doesn't matter which part of the trip I describe, it was all fantastic. The guides are very knowledgeable in both the hunt and the preservation of the game after the kill. As for the rest of the hunt, well the camps cleanliness and the meals were second to none. This is one outfitter that I would recommend to anyone. You will definately get your moneys worth and much much more.

Outfitter Review: Golden Eagle Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Donny Carr
Hunter: Roy Collins
Animals Hunted: Elk
I hunted the second rifle season for elk. Saw several bulls, but due to lack of water, the main beam length and tops seemed a little week this year. I had hopes of bettering my 351 that I took with Donny in '06, but the best we found was a solid 6 x 6 that scored 322. Having hunting this ranch before, I know that there are much larger bulls there, they just were playing hard to get. I'll go back for another try for elk in a few years, but next will be one of the muleys that I saw. Deer numbers appeared to be up compared to past years.Donny has a great group of guides that put forth the effort needed to find and kill trophy animals, plus they're fun to be around. If you're looking for a quality big game hunt, give them a try. I have 5 times and hope to many more in the future.
Outfitter Review: Sam Frazier - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Sam Frazier
Hunter: Bob Rowe
Animals Hunted: Elk
My hunt was a semi guided hunt in Unit 76 in Colorado. I saw over 200 elk the day before the season. There were four of us - 2 killed bulls, another missed one, all 4 saw bulls in range during the hunt. Sam puts on a first class hunt. He knows the country, works hard to get you near the elk, and works hard to pack your elk out. I will definitely hunt with Sam again. This was the best of 5 elk hunts that I have been on.
Outfitter Review: Golden Eagle Outfitters - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Donny Carr
Hunter: Jim Owens
Animals Hunted: Elk
I hunted the Bow & Arrow Ranch which supposedly had 300 to 350 class Elk. Saw only 2 cows and 3 calves. I was told that I had the head guide who had been with Donny for 10 Yrs. We did not hear a single Bugle or see a Bull Elk. The ranch is mostly open range with high ridges with scattered pinon and juniper. We could easily glass the ranch and if there had been Elk, it would have fairly easy to see. Do not book this outfitter as this is a rip-off.
Outfitter Review: Private Land Bucks & Bulls - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Rick Sears
Hunter: Gary Detmer
Animals Hunted: Elk & Bear
Rick tell you what you want to hear. not the truth. his guide did not seem to no there areas. Did not do a good job of scouting and putting you on game. Rick is a very rude and unprofessional. I read in another reveiw he had his outfitters licenes revoked because he got in a fight with one of his guides I could beleive it he is very rude and disrespectfull to them I could not imagine working for him. I would no way recommend Privateland Bucks and Bulls to any one.

Outfitter Review: West Fork Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Cliff Parker
Hunter: Jerry Taylor
Animals Hunted: Elk
There was two of us and we did an archery drop camp with Cliff. From the time we started looking for an Outfitters through the hunt Cliff was very helpful and went above what was expected. We saw bulls every day and even got one on the first day. Cliff has some nice elk in his hunting area. West Fork Outfitters is a top notch group of people. I can't wait to go back and get the big bull take is still running around.
Outfitter Review: Smith Rancho - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Brad Smith
Hunter: Dean Romania
Animals Hunted: elk
The hunt consisted of going out morning and evening approximately 2 hours each period. Setting on a travel way between feeding and bedding area and hoping that an animal would walk by. The hunters were divided into 3 groups with each group following the lead caravan to the hunting area (caravan order never changed)then walking about 1/2 mile to an area and waiting (area assigned by Mr. Smith lead guide received better area, lesser guides got the poor areas). We were not allowed to walk away from the assigned waiting area.
Outfitter Review: Backcountry Outfitters - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Dave Gilliam
Hunter: Mike Phelps
Animals Hunted: Elk
I have hunted multiple Western states with several outfitters. This crew was very disappointing. There animals were not sturdy and not surefooted.Outfitter and guides (including his 50ish year old son) fought and argued in front of the hunters. I witnessed the outfitter fire a young guide in front of several hunters. My guide was a nice guy who knew how to hunt, but had never been in the area. He was working on a new barn for the outfitter and was from Arizona when the outfitter hired him. I paid 4k for a hunt with a guide who did not know the area. Seriously, we were "lost" twice during the hunt. Luckily I had a GPS but the guide did not believe it and we finally got back to camp late at night. Had a Easterner with us who almost was reduced to tears when we were lost. I really am not a complainer, but if you want a serious backcountry hunt and have experience, this will not be the hunt for you. Contact me if you like.
Outfitter Review: Conrads High Country Outfitters, Colorado - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Conrad Wygant
Hunter: Dudley N.
Animals Hunted: Elk
Very poor hunting areas, not even old sign. The area was void of elk, all hunting was on public land and never seen an elk all week. Owner (Conrad) was rude, extremely foul mouthed and seemed a little unbalanced due to his unexplained temperment to guides and hunters alike...very strange. Maybe chemically imbalanced, not sure. Whatever the cause of disposition, it's and awful way to run a business.

Outfitter Review: Golden Eagle Outfitters - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Donny Carr
Hunter: John Mattingly
Animals Hunted: Elk
I made an archery elk hunt in Sept. 2007 and saw 50-60 elk with 8 big bulls in rifle range. Two of these bulls were in the 350" range one a 5x6 and the other a 6x6. We just never had a good shot opportunity in bow range. I had three nice bulls in within 50 yards but got busted twice or had a bad shot angle and the other was across a posted fence line. That was the most exciting hunt I have ever been on. In Nov. 2008 I went on the last rifle hunt. It was a tuff hunt on a full moon. I saw nine bulls with only two being shooters. One on the second day running away about a 330" 6x6 and the bull I killed on the 4th evening a 6x8 bull grossing 320". Check out the picture on the website. This was my third hunt with Donny and they have all been Great. (2 elk & a antelope) I will be back!

Me and my dad hunted with Donny in the fall of O8. My dad took an awsome 6x6 on the 1st day of hunting. And on the 3rd afternoon I was able to harvest a monster 6x6 just check his out his website thats all you need to see. Donny is very passionate about his operation as well as the success of his clients. His guides are very knowledgeable, personable, and know the territory very well. My brother hunted with them the year before and harvested a monster 8x9 on one of his other ranches. If you want an nice elk or mule deer hunt call donny.
Outfitter Review: Budge's Flattops Wilderness Lodge - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Larry Arnold
Hunter: Joe Neglia
Animals Hunted: Elk
I talked to Larry twice and asked for references and he randomly gave me the SAME people both times. One person turned out to be his guide that should have tipped me off.He promised me that I would not see any other hunters since we were so far back but they were all over the place every day actually racing us up the mountain one day. The guides that I had turned out to be two brothers that were getting a free hunt if they took us out hunting. They drop you off in the morning and go off hunting, thatÂ’s not my definition of a guide. I was also told that they would book ten hunters in camp but it turned out to be Seventeen when I arrived. We hunted in three spots, the valley behind the cabin has a stream and a main horse trail that you hunt off of. So if an Elk is coming in a hunter on horse back just happens along at the same time (and this happened) they spook the Elk. I could go into more details But I thing this place is a waste of money.

It is a true D.I.Y. hunt. All in all it was a good hunt. Thanks Larry
Outfitter Review: Hills Guide Service - CO
Outfitter / Owner: operator--Mark Sullivent
Hunter: Ed Basnett
Animals Hunted: elk
Hills guide is an old outfitter that veteran colorado elk guide Mark Sullivent and his wife Jeanette have been operating on the grand mesa-I booked a cabin self guided hunt and Mark spent more than a fair amount of time helping me get oriented w/the area--we got into elk the first afternoon on the mountain---loads of mature bear sign,a number of mule deer, kicked 3 moose out of their bed--We got in a group of around 10 elk on the second morning of hunt--shots at cows and 1 very large bull who was in range, but obscured by the cover---that day I told Mark he was off the hook, because you cant do better than that,to feel the scream of those bulls so up close--so I say I hope Mark and Jeanette live forever and I never die! Outfitter Review: Conrad's High Country Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Conrad/Linda Wygant
Hunter: Greg Zykan
Animals Hunted: Elk
I killed a 6X6 bull elk opening morning of the first rifle season in 2008. We had to pack out the animal ourselves with the guide and the other hunter. Probably should of used horses instead. My father hunted and did not see a single bull or cow the entire hunt. He is 57 years old and ran him extremely hard up and down the mountains and even got so far ahead of him, he lost him for a brief time. Conrad reminded me of a sarcastic Willie Nelson and if you are not thick skinned, you will have a miserable time in camp. The best advice that I can give is to be in top notch shape because once you start hunting, Conrad does not like to take a break at all.

Great knowledge of the area and quality of game is right on par for eastern colorado. Camp is a great experience and the guides are hunters as well, so listening to their advice is easy. Outfitter Review: Golden Eagle Outfitter - Colorado
Outfitter / Owner: Donny Carr
Hunter: Randy Matthews
Animals Hunted: Deer
I have been working with Mr. Carr for the past 4 hunting sesaons hosting youth doe deer hunts on his deer leases out in eastern Colorado. I line up the kids (6) and he puts us up in his bunk house, feeds us and personally guides the kids. These are top notch hunts for the kids with lots of animals. The kids learn a lot about hunting and life, and have a blast joking around with Mr. Carr. The kids don't even seem to mind it that much when they lose a portion of their shirt tail after a miss. The only cost to these kids is that they have to buy their own hunting license and write us a story about their experience. As documented in these stories, the most important thing provided to these kids are the special memories that they build with their dads during these hunts.Even though Mr. Carr doesn't get paid a penny for these hunts what he gets in thank you's and hugs at the end of the hunts are worth more than gold and silver! Thank you Mr. Carr for all you do for the kids!Randy Matthews

Outfitter Review: Rocky Mountain Ranches - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Larry Bishop
Hunter: Darrell Harper
Animals Hunted: Elk
I have hunted with Larry Bishop twice now on a couple of DIY elk hunts and have had 100% success. This area of Colorado is managed for larger quantities of elk rather than trophy size elk. It is an excellent area for hunters who do not posess a lot of preference points; tags can be had with 0 points. Larry is a no BS kind of guy who doesn't make a lot of promises that he can't keep. If you hunt with Larry you will see elk; if you hunt hard you have an excellent opportunity to take a good representative animal.
Outfitter Review: Garvey Brothers Outfitters - CO

Animals Hunted: Elk
Hunted the 4th season. Saw 10-20 bulls each day, with several in the 330 to 350 class. Got a good 6x6. This was with blue bird weather and a full moon. Also saw about a dozen bucks a day. I will book with the Garveys again whenever I can get an elk or deer tag for Unit 61.
Outfitter Review: Garvey Brothers - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Stan/Doylene Garvey
Hunter: Art Thigpen
Animals Hunted: mule deer
Garvey mainly hunts trophy Unit 61 in Colorado. I've hunted with them 3 times, and plan to go with them again. I've been very successful. 1995-5x6 elk and 3x3 mule deer; 2000-6x6 elk; 2008-4x4 mule deer. Top notch guides and camp personnel. Very good hunting vehicles. Lots of game in their area and they know where to hunt. They get many repeat hunters. They have one of the best outfitter web sites on the internet. If you plan to hunt Unit 61 in Colorado I highly recommend that you consider them.

My review is somewhat limited because the hunt lasted only a couple of hours. We spotted a 78" antelope at sunrise and by 9:30 am on opening morning, we were taking pictures.I am scheduled to return next year with hopes of taking an elk bigger than my 350+ that Donny and company found for me in 2006.If you want a trophy deer, elk or antelope, and are willing to pass on the "average" animals, this is the place.

Outfitter Review: Elk Basin Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Dan Toothaker
Hunter: Jeff Petrous
Animals Hunted: ELK
6 hunters in camp, 4 of us did not see an elk all week. No shots on legal game were ever presented. Several other hunters not affiliated with our outfitter were spotted throughout the week. Other camp run by outfitter encroached on our area and shot 2 elk. That camp was run by the owners who had a wealthy businessman in their camp. Our guides admitted that he was taken care of more than the other hunters and us.

Hunter: Matt Swilling
Animals Hunted: Elk/Deer
Had an opportunity at a 200Â’ Mule deer but was not able to get a shot. I ended up killing a very nice mule deer with a muzzleloader. Saw lots of deer everyday and some really nice bucks on several different days. I was hunting for Elk with a bow and was unable to harvest one, but it was not due to not getting on them. On this trip I saw the most animals that I have ever seen on a guided hunt. It was great!!! I will be back next year.
Outfitter Review: Atkinson Expeditions - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Wes Atkinson
Hunter: Scott Spencer
Animals Hunted: Elk
I went on my first elk hunt during the first rifle season in Colorado (Oct 11-15) and I was successful on the third day. We hunted two different herds of elk - one of about 200 head and the other about 50-60 head. Three hunters and three bulls taken in the first three days of the season. My bull was a beautiful 6x6 that scored about 265. That other two bulls that were taken probably scored around 270-280. Outstanding elk for Colorado and for free ranging animals.Wes runs a first class operation with plenty of animals and beautiful country on top of that. My guide, Robert Amidon, worked his tail off for me. I would recommend Atkinson Expeditions to anyone looking for an outstanding hunt and a great chance at a bull elk.
Outfitter Review: Elk Basin Outfitters - CO
Outfitter / Owner: Dan Toothaker
Hunter: Gary Douglass
Animals Hunted: Bull Elk
My 4th successful bull elk hunt (black powder & rifle) with Elk Basin Outfitters (2001, 2003, 2007 & 2008). These folks work ‘HARD’ to put clients on game. Camp atmosphere has ALWAYS been pleasant. This truly is a wilderness hunting experience and every year brings its own variables of weather, moon phase, high/low winter game survival rates, and hunting pressure. All equipment and gear must come in on horse back; if you are expecting the Holiday Inn with room service look elsewhere. I recommend Dan Toothaker and his crew WITHOUT reservation. At 72 I was not in the best of shape for the mountains this year but Elk Basin Outfitters still made it happen! Most seasoned elk hunters realize that elk constantly move about but do have areas they frequent and Dan’s people begin by putting clients (the one’s who are capable and willing) into these areas. No solicitation has been made to me to post this reference; I am a paying client!
