Outfitter Review: Turtle River Whitetail Outfitters - Meadow Lake SK

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

Richard and Kathy Bailey have a great outfitting service. I have hunted with them twice, once I was the only hunter in camp and was worried I might be "forgotten", boy was i wrong! It was the most fun I have ever had. I hunted again 2 years later with a full camp (6 total) of hunters, I was worried again, thinking I may not get the awesome experience i had the first time, WRONG AGAIN! I had an even better time with the other hunters. Kathy is Richards wife and camp cook and so much more, if you forgot something don't worry Kathy has one, she must have been a girl scout. Lawrance the head guide should have his own survival show, he could live in the bush. Richard is the man! some may say he brags I say its not bragging when you can back up the talk with actions and results, and that he does. Richard displays confidence in his ability to be a good outfitter and makes good decisions to provide a good chance at a great hunt, I pay good hard earned money for those decisions, I don't want to hunt with an outfitter that is second guessing stand placement or animal movement, Richard is a true professional. The cabin is in fine shape, beds are good, the bathroom is kept cleaner than a fine hotel. The meals are great and Kathy uses real plates and utensils not paper and plasticware, that may not mean much to you but wouldn't paper and plasticware seem awefull cheap on a 5thousand dollar hunt. Transportation to the stand is great the atv's are in great shape, and the ride to the stand is anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half through the deep woods depending what stand location you are in. You will see lots of animals both doe and buck. The hardest part is waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger, their is a lot to chose from. After the kill your work is done, the guide and Richard do everything from tracking(you can track too) to loading, skining, caping, cleaning, packing, you name it they do it, it's all included nothing is hidden and their is no EXTRA charge for this that and the other. At camp their is a phone that we all share if you don't have service on the cell, no charge ofcoarse. After the hunt if you want to help place cameras, put out bait, and do camp chores, Richard will put you to work, or you can go watch tv what ever floats your boat. The hunt will be above your expectations, the cost is a lot, but it is average compared to other outfitters, which means you have a lot of value for the money spent. I can't afford to go every year , but I set my goals for everyother year and my next hunt is Nov. 2012 2nd week. I have no problem putting money down to save a spot because Richard and Kathy run an honest and good outfitting service.

This was my first hunt with Turtle River Whitetails & God willing not my last. Saw more deer in one week than my last 3 Saskatchewan hunts combined. Stand location was perfect. Richard & Guides can get you close to big deer. The 2 issues I had were the blind was too small to shoot a recurve out of & the chair was wrong type. Richard said next time all would be corrected. Over-all I give Turtle River 2 thumbes up. Traditional Bow hunters feel free to call for complete scoop.

This was was the first of what I hope will be many hunts with Turtle River and Richard Bailey. This hunt meets the true definition of a wilderness hunt. A highly personalized hunt with lots of opportunities. I shot a 158" buck the second day of the hunt. My only disappointment was that I did not hunt longer! I have been on 7 different guided hunts and regard this is the best. This hunt is for the avid hunter. The owner and guides are serious about getting big bucks. It is almost a 20 mile quad ride into the deep forest. It is not the type of hunt that you head back to the lodge for hot chocolate.

This was my second trip to Makwa River Outfitters and this time I brought my 83 year old father and two friends. I had previously taken a 155" buck with them and was hoping for the same or better on this trip. Kathy Dopko runs a CLASS A+++ operation. The accomodations are fantastic, the meals all cooked in her own kitchen, the guides, the transportation the entire operation is great. The stand locations are deep, deep, deep into the Saskatchewan bush and miles apart from each other. Each hunter has a "fresh" stand when they arrive, meaning it has not been hunted at all during that year. There were 8 hunters in camp the week I was there and we all tagged out. The largest being a whopping 205" non-typical and the smallest a 120" 8 point ( shot by my Dad as he was too cold to last all day in the Saskatchewan winter). If I were looking to go on a quaility, class hunt I would certainly recommend Kathy Dobko and her Makwa River Outfitters operation.

Last year was my 4th year hunting with Richard and Kathy Bailey and Turtle River Whitetails and Richard had me on a termendous buck that he had on camera. I hunted him hard for 6 days and he didn't show, but I took a great 8 pointer. Passed up high 140's bucks on the first 3 days holding out for the larger guy... But that's hunting and what makes it so exciting right!!! Richards guides are very knowledgeable and are excellent woodsmen, Kathy's cooking is OUTSTANDING!! Richards area is very remote, only accessable by quad so you will never see another hunter or hear another vehicle, it's like heaven. If you are looking for a great Saskatchewan hunt with honest trustworthy people, I wouldn't hesitate to give Richard and Kathhy a call and get it booked. If you ever have any quesitons feel free to call me direct.

Richard treated my son and I like family, went out of his way to put us in blinds with BIG deer on the Cuddeback cameras. We hunted 3 years in a row and felt like part of the family. Straight up good hunt, saw 13 bucks in one day, passed a Booner the first day of the second year. I learned more from Richard in 3 weeks than on my own in 25 years. Safe, comfortable and HUGE bucks. I passed up deer other people dream about. Nobody is a stranger in Richard Bailey's camp, nobody goes hungry and everybody leaves as part of the family. Highly recommend this hunt. If you are a SERIOUS deer hunter, Turtle River is the place to go. Call me if you want more information. Take your kids to Turtle River for a lifetime of memories.

Turtle Creek Outfitters provides you the hunter the best possible opportunity to harvest the buck of your dreams. Now we must remember that the outfitter does what he can but you as a hunter have to hold up you part of the deal by taking you knowledge, skills, and opportunities presented to harvest a buck of a lifetime. I have hunted Canada for 8 years and if you are trophy hunting you will not always go home with a book deer but you have to hunt like you never have before and give it all you can while you are there!!! I cannot tolerate hunters that don’t do their part when they come to Canada and then hold the outfitters responsible for the out come... Please stay home or go to a high fence operation so that when you wake up from your nap you can decide what hand fed pet you want to harvest... Bottom line hunting in the Canadian bush is tuff due to remote conditions, weather and time in the blind. So make sure you are ready by being prepared and working with your outfitter!! Caution if you are a couch potato then for you own best interests please stay home...

When an outfitter out right lies to you and it makes you so upset even 4 years later you have to set the record straight. Hunted with many outfitters in SK and across North America and this one was without a doubt hands down the WORST!PERIOD! He never told us a lot of things about the hunt. The biggest one being we could hunt from any of the blinds he had and when we got there he told us we could only hunt from two blinds. He told us he used the best of feed both peas and hay. There was a small pile of peas and absolutely no hay. I can understand how some outfitters get along better with certain people but this guy call me a "FAT ASS" to my friends. I am hardly that! Look at his repeat business and tell me if you see the same faces in those pics. I'm writing this to sling mud I'm writing this to say stay away. I spent a week of my life there that I wish I could have back-along with my MONEY! You need more information call me @ 810-656-0153 Jeff

Larry is an outstanding Outfitter with great areas to hunt. There are lots of nice bears with lots of color phase. I took a P&Y brown color phase scoring 19 & 3/4" Many of the bears are well over 300lbs, some 500+ are also there. I even passed on a blonde only because I thought he was not big enough for me. If you don't shoot a bear it is only because you did not want too. Can't wait for my next trip up to hunt with Larry and his crew!

I have been on 2 Saskatchewan deer hunts and so far this was the best. Richard and Kathy run a first class operation and a tight ship. There is no screwing around. We were in the woods so far it took us over an hour everyday to get to our stands on quads. You will never see another person all day besides your guide. My friend & I paid extra for guided fishing and did not receive a guide and were given a 16' boat w/pull start 30hp motor & no depth finder to fish a lake we knew nothing about. Bear hunting was very poor. I did not see a single bear in 5 days and my friend saw just 1 bear, a small one. Glen blamed weather for the bad luck, but I am blaming the fact that the bait sights were not properly baited, by using very little bait, if any.

Outfitter Review: Makwa River Outfitters - Saskatchewan

Outfitter / Owner: Kathy Dopko

Hunter: Frank Pierce

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

My wife and I hunted with Makwa River Outfitters during Thanksgiving week of 2008. This was actually my second hunt with them having hunted there previously in 2003. In 2003, Kathy's husband, Kenny ran the operation. Unfortunately, Kenny passed away about 2 years ago and Kathy now has Barry Brucks running the operation as the primary guide/outfitter. Barry proved to be every bit as good at what he does as Kenny - an excellent outfitter with a great deal of knowledge and experience as well as a great person with real down to earth people skills.Kathy prepares home-cooked meals fit for a king every day and all hunters/guides and the Dopko family sit down for dinner in their home dining room. Breakfast is home-cooked and delivered to the hunters log cabin every morning and lunches are packed for each hunter to take to the bush for their all day (daylight til dusk) hunts. They are licensed by the Province for up to 40 hunters per season. They have approximately 250 square miles of provincial and private properly in which they have exclusive outfitting priveleges. They take only 8 hunters per week for the 5-week season. Each week they hunt a different zone of approximately 50 square miles. When a buck is killed that stand is shut down until the next year so they do not over hunt any particular area. The deer move naturally with the major activity coming between 10 AM - 2 PM. In 2003 I took a 138" 10 point after passing up 3 larger bucks earlier in the week. I killed this buck the first thing in the morning on day 5 when the temperature was hovering around 10 below zero for the second consecutive day. I had seen a total of 30 different bucks during the first 4 days but I wasn't prepared to spend another day in a treestand in such cold weather. One hunter from Missouri was holding out for a booner and went home without filling his tag. The other 7 hunters all filled out with the average B&C score being 142" +, with the largest scoring 158" (a big 8 pt). I might add that the week prior to our hunt, 7 of 8 hunters took bucks averaging 161".In 2008, my wife took a nice 8 pt scoring 133" and weighing 230# (live weight). It had a 10" spread between the brow (G1) tines! I ended up taking a 149" 10 point on day 6 which weighed in at 270# (live weight). I had seen 24 different bucks (up to 130") the previous 5 days. Two days after taking my deer on the first day of the week 5 hunt, one of their hunters took a 210" non-typical. All of the pics are on their website. Both of my hunts were rifle hunts but I believe they will also host bow hunters. They also guide spring bear hunts with excellent success. This is one hunt that every serious deer hunter should do at least once during their lifetime.

Hunted here in Nov. 2008. Saw tons of deer both days. Harvested a nice 8 point on the 2nd morning at 64 yards. I wish I would have been a little more patient, because Richard has some real beasts in his area--but you live and learn.Equipment was top notch. Stands were comfortable and roomy, and the front window sills make a great rest. Richard also has a 100 yd range on-site to check your rifle before the hunt. All atv's were in good working order, with no break-downs.His area is very remote. You are miles from any human activity. The remoteness provides "zero" hunting pressure from any locals. Richard and Kathy are 2 of the most caring people you will ever book a hunt with. They have every base covered. Richard thrives on your daily feedback from what you saw from your stand. The more info you give him, the better your chances. If you are considering booking a hunt in SK, do yourself a favor, and call Richard. I promise there isn't a better paid deer hunt out there.

Animals Hunted: Spring 2007 - Black Bear

Food was eatable for the hungry, drinking water unfiltered from river, the kitchen sanitary questionable, and meal clean-up left to hunters. Hot shower was available. Our party of 4 saw 1 boar and 2 sows total for the week. Second party of 2 boys shot small sows. New guides, while helpful had no experience. Outfitter was constantly confrontational, argumentative and disrespectful to hunters. Outfitter informed us upon arrival that bow-blinds were not available for those of us signed up for bow-hunts. Guides were already in process of closing camp for the season. Switched to guns after 2 days of nothing. Last day of hunting w/gun I was placed on a nice bow blind setup with bait can barely 18 yrds away. Nice huh! Three of us are lifelong hunters and have in past hunted internationally. What a disappointment this trip was and a poor reflection on Saskatchewan outfitters....

I hunted with Circle B Bar Outtfitters for 4 years. After my first year, two friends joined me and we hunter there for 3 more years. We saw numerous bucks in the 140 to 150 plus class. Several 150 class deer were taken every year. I personally passed on 2 160 class bucks which I videoed (and took alot of flack back at camp for passing on). The enthusiasm of Mark and his guides, comfort and set-up of his stands, game sitings and first class accomodations kept my friends and I coming back.

I have hunted with Mark five times now. I got hooked the first year when I blew a shot on a 190 class buck. I filmed a young 165 that a guy killed two days later on my third trip. Last year, I hunted Monday eve and saw 12 deer before dark, 8 bucks and 4 does. Tuesday I hunted all day and saw 7 does and 15 bucks. Hard to pass on some of them. Wednesday it was very cold and windy.{-34c} The deer weren't moving at all. At 10:50, I saw movement across a cut-over and had to watch a 14 point walking toward me for what seemed like an hour because he was walking with the wind and I had that window closed. He finally arrived at the bait site and I nailed him at less than 75 yards. I called Mark on the radio and he came and helped me retrieve a 325 pound buck that green scored 170 inches gross. Mark and his guides have always worked very hard to give me the chance to harvest a good buck and comfortable enough to enjoy my vacation!

After returning home and transporting my horns and hide to the taxidermist, it was noted by my taxidermist, "I had the wrong Hide". After careful examination by two taxidermists agreed, bullet holes not consistent where I shot my Elk, too small of a hide for a 370 class Elk, Color in hide difference, not enough hide when mounted as an 31/2 inch base box had to be added to prevent the horns from hitting wall. The outfitter was contacted several times and failed to correct or satisfy the customer. This was my 3rd year of hunting Saskatchewan - but my first year with Turtle River. This was the hunt I have been searching for - a true remote area of Saskatchewan. I have hunted white tails with outfitters all across Canada and the United States, so my comments are based on lots of experience. Turtle River Outfitters is by far the BEST of all of them. Richard Bailey has created a hunting experience that I can't imagine can be topped by ANY outfitter anywhere. Richard spends all year preparing for the 4 weeks of the Saskatchewan rifle season. You will hunt from blinds that are as remote as you can find, you are brought in by ATV's (Quads)many miles. And it is not just the hunting that is superb - the accomodations, the guides and the camaraderie that develops in one week's time, truly makes it sad to say good-bye until next year. Kathy Bailey prepares true home-cooked meals that cannot be beat. Oh - and the deer - you will see bucks, lots of bucks and the size of bucks (150 class and bigger) that you expect from Saskatchewan. Richard's year-round scouting really pays off. I rank Turtle River Outfitters as #1 in Saskatchewan. Email me if you want more details on my overall hunting experience with them.

Had a 5 1/2 day hunt with them. Guides were excellent..they knew their stuff and worked hard. I had planned on bowhunting the hunt but due to torn muscle in chest I ended up muzzleloader hunting instead. I had opportunity at 140-150 class deer each day in the stand . There were also 'bigger' deer coming in but late after legal shooting light. My overall impression of the hunt was excellent. I've been burned by outfitters before but this was by far way above average. I filmed both my hunt and my buddy's bowhunting hunt the last day. Quality of deer was excellent and numbers were high. The place we stayed was excellent and the food was great! Thanks Carol! I'd recommend this group to anybody. You wont be disappointed.

Two years ago (2005) was a beautiful symetrical 10 pointer, last year November 2006 I took a 151+ mainframe 12 point with a nice 4" kicker off the right main beam (13pt the redneck way). Seen no horns on the first day but the next 2 days I seen 13 different bucks and settled on the 12 pointer late on the 3rd day. Other bucks seen were a beautiful high 130" 8 pointer and a beautiful non-typical with a droptine, which I might have shot after looking at him more on video, plus many other smaller up and coming bucks. We had 5 guys in camp and everyone filled thier tag. Our week average was middle 140's.

Outfitter Review: Double Arrow Outfitters - Saskatchewan

Outfitter / Owner: Fred Gopher

Hunter: Dudley Pierce

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

This hunt was conducted on Thunderchild lands near Loon Lake. As a former Thunderchild client, the operation was always sketchy but the hunting more then made up for it. Now, the property has been signed over to Double Arrow and its as if I never hunted there before. Total preferential treatment was given to current Double Arrow clients. When we arrived, we discovered 6 deer in the garage, unlicensed, not gutted, and apparently abandoned by previous "hunters". None of these bucks exceeded 125" and most had been dead for several days. My group of 7 was sent to a separate lodge which was very comfortable and staffed by former Thunderchild employees. Our hunt was most enjoyable thanks to the efforts of our guides (Mike, Wesley, Joe) and their exceptional knowledge of the hunting area. One additional hunter (one of Freds' regulars) also shared the house but refused to hunt with any guide unless it was one of Freds' highly trained professionals. As it turned out, this kid put him on the same stand for 5 days, never scouted or baited another stand, and spent the entire day sleeping on the couch in the lodge. On the 6th day he was fired by his client who then paired up with one of our guides. There were 12 hunters in the other camp, 4 shot smallish bucks (140's) while at least 4 others quit hunting after Wednesday and went home. They stated they had sat on the same stand for 3 days, seen very few bucks, and found their guides totally unresponsive to their requests. Finally, my group was not allowed to rebook as we were replaced by Double Arrow clients from his other camps. This may also be due to the fact that Mr. Gopher basically demanded we NOT tip our guides and that all tip money was to be given to him. I advised Mr. Gopher I don't tip the outfitter unless he is also my guide. His tip was the $36,000 we paid to hunt. Tips are for exceptional service by the employees, NOT a bonus for the outfitter. If you are a Double Arrow regular, it will be business as usual, be that good, bad, or indifferent. If you're thinking of becoming a new client, beware, there are no doubt better hunts and with far less hassle.

This was the second time I hunted with this outfitter, but this year it was a different owner. And all I have to say is that Richard did an excellent job during his first year running this outfitter. He worked hard to get every one of his hunters a good, quality whitetail deer. He and his guide Dwayne know exactly what they are doing. They told us that they wanted us to get a deer more than we wanted to get one ourselves. That is no lie. They are very hard workers and not only that, they are very good, honest people. Richard's wife Kathy did all the cooking and other camp stuff and she was just unbelieveable. She, too, is a very, very hard worker. She was non-stop in the kitchen preparing food and snacks. They are all just very good people. I considered them to be family/friends during my time with them. I plan on hunting with them again.

I only say I would recommend Southbay because I believe Andy really wants his hunters to score big. I put n/a for guides because they really just take you to the stands but Andy is familiar with the area. There were 6 hunters the first week and not one deer was sighted over 140 with the conditions being great. When returning to the states I met at least 25 hunters at the airport taking home 140 to 190 inch deer the same week. Food was fantastic. Andy was a great host.

This was the worst experience I have ever had in my 37 years of hunting (including 10 years in Canada). I called and then wrote a letter to the Saskatchewan Outfitters Association and the president of Tourism Saskatchewan. The following parts from that letter will give you an idea as to what happened on my hunt.My group was booked for a 7 day hunt. Upon arriving at the Saskatoon airport we were to be picked-up at 4pm by a representative from Randy's operation and driven to the indian reserve. At 5:30pm we started to try and reach Randy to see why we had not been picked-up. After several hours of being told someone was on their way, we were finallly picked-up at 11:30pm, 7-1/2 hours after we had landed and were scheduled to be picked-up. We were then taken to a motel and told that we would have to pay for the room and that we would be reimbursed later. This was due to the fact that Randy had overbooked at the hunting lodge and had no room to keep us. The next morning we met Randy for the first time and immediately communicated (politely) that we wished to speak with him, when he had a moment, regarding the way things were being handled. It was getting late, and all of the hunters still had to be dropped off for the morning hunt so we did not get the opportunity to discuss the matter with him at that moment. No one in my group saw Randy again until noon the second day. When we did finally see him, we asked again to speak with him about our concerns. Here is where it really gets bad.....A member of our group began to inquire as to why so many things were not as promised. Randy's reaction was totally unexpected and caught us all off guard. He immediately began to use profanity and curse directly at our party member calling him names that I will not write down. I immediately tried to stop Randy's verbal altercation fearing it would escalate. I then communicated to Randy that I thought, at this point, it would be best if our group ended the hunt and left. I asked if he could arrange to have us driven back to Saskatoon immediately. He did and within minutes we were gone. The scheduled 7 day hunt was over after 1-1/2 days. No refunds, no reimbursments. In all of my years of hunting, I have never witnessed such an outburst and vulgar display from anyone at a hunting camp, much less the outfitter. Randy's outburst was totally unprovoked and his actions were extremely unprofessional.I was surprised at the outfitters verbal attack on a friend. I was concerned for our safety because we were on an Indian reservation in a foreign country with no vehicle or way to get out. If you are wondering, I did call references. The main concern with references that come from the outfitter is often (sadly) they do not reflect the entire story.I have done everything in my power to report this individual and his operation. All I can say about this outfitter is be warned!

Animals Hunted: Whitetail /Mule Deer Combo

I booked a 7 day combo hunt for mule/whitetail deer. The hunt was to be a one on one guided spot and stalk hunt. Our group was told by the outfitter that the camp would not have more than 6 hunters at a time. We had 4 hunters in our group and there was supposed to be another 2 hunters the week we booked for a total of six. One member of our party had an emergency at the last minute and could not make the trip, so there should have been only 5 in camp.We landed at the airport at 4pm and were not picked up until 11:30pm! We were left in the airport for 7-1/2 hours after repeatedly being told by Randy's wife and Randy that someone was on their way. We found out later that no one was told to come and pick us up until 9:30pm.We went for breakfast the first morning of the hunt and found out that there were another 5 hunters already in camp, making a total of 8. We soon learned the outfitter was not equipped to handle 5 hunters much less 8. Our group had to wait to eat breakfast after the first group. We ended up eating one ice cold egg, 1 piece of cold toast and 1 frozen carton of orange juice with a straw. My guide then took me to a stand. He was Randy's (the outfitter) youngest brother and all of 17 years old. I told him I had signed up for a spot and stalk hunt and did not want to sit in a stand. He ignored me and brought me to a stand anyway. It may have been because he had broken his leg a couple of months earlier and could barely walk.I saw 4 mule deer doe and one yearly mule deer buck the first morning. My guide then picked me up for lunch and we proceeded to drive around from house to house for the next hour trying to find out where we were going to eat. We again were served a horrible meal.I was again dropped off at the same blind that afternoon and I saw 2 mule deer (1 doe and 1 small buck). The next morning I had to wake up my guide to bring me out hunting. He had over slept due to a late night of who knows what. He took me to another stand and I saw 1 young whitetail buck which would score about 100-110, 1 mule deer doe and 1 small mule deer buck. My guide picked me up and we went back for lunch and went through the same routine of driving from house to house trying to find out who was going to make lunch.Again, another horrible meal.By now the group of five hunters had left and we were expecting the other 2 hunters to be arriving. We found out that in addition to the 2 hunters we were expecting an additional 5 hunters showed up. Now we had a total of 10 hunters in camp! The first morning of the hunt we had asked Randy if we could talk with him concerning the way things were being handled. He stopped playing his "air" guitar to the rock and roll music (playing at 7am) and said he would talk with us. He then disappeared for a day and no one knew where he was. The next time we saw him he immediately asked us for our money. When my partner started to talk to Randy about the way things were being handled Randy blew up and went on a rampage, yelling and cussing my partner at the top of his lungs. After I was able to settle Randy down, we asked to be taken immediately back to town and our hunt was over. This was truly the worst hunting experience I have had in 37 years of hunting. This outfitter is totally unorganized. He failed in every aspect of the hunt for which he was responsible and could control. This outfitter has no control and is definitely out of control! The Outfitters Association should seriously review this person's mental stability to conduct this type of operation. With his temper and outburst something may seriously go wrong one day.

The problems began when the outfitter was not there to pick us up as planned. After numerous calls, and being repeatdly lied to, we were eventually picked up over 7 1/2 hours late. We, being three hunters with all our gear, were then packed into a truck and taken to a motel, without so much as an apology or an explanation. We were picked up the next morning, but still no sight of the outfitter. We were fed a cold breakfast by the outfitter's wife in their filthy mobile home. Then we were taken to our blinds by a "driver", not a guide as admitted by the man who was our driver. He stated he only knew where the stands were, but not much about hunting. So much for the one on one guide service we were promised by the outfitter that we have yet to lay eyes on. The stands were terrible. My stand consisted of a board to sit on with no foot rest, with the board/seat facing a solid wall with no windows. The construction of the blinds did not take into consideration factors that should have been addressed so as to allow for a tolerable all day sit. The bait was placed over 300 yards from the blind and we were left in the blinds without any means of communication. That night we were allowed to sleep in our driver's home and his wife cooked us a decent meal. We can honestly say he was the only positive in this awful experience. Poor guy, who seemed to be the outfitter's uncle, admitted he had not been paid in weeks and he was out approx. $3,000. Day 2 --we have still not seen the outfitter and we still only have the driver, but no guides. Before we went out to hunt our driver told us that 7 more hunters were due to arrive, even though we had been promised a max. of 6 hunter's in camp. My group was suppose to have been a total of four hunters, and at the last minute one of my guys cancelled due to an ill wife. So, at the most we should have had 3 other hunter's joining us, not 7 more hunters. We then hunted half a day and came in to be served another awful meal by the outfitter's wife. After the meal that we ate in the outfitter's filthy home, that we ate only because we were so hungry, the outfitter finally arrived. The first words out of his mouth were, "Did you bring cash or cashier's checks". He still did not apologize or offer any explanation for all the broken promises. Therefore, we elected to speak to him outside in hopes that we could diplomatically voice our dissatisfaction and our concerns, but to no avail. He blew up and started shouting, and he never took responsibility for not picking us up on time, for not have one on one guides, for not having proper accommadations and for booking the hunt with too many hunters. Consequently, we asked to be taken back to Saskatoon, which he arranged after more moaning and groaning. Never did he even attempt to make things right. So this outfitter is $8300 richer for a day and half hunt, with very little out of pocket expense for himself. The only thing I can say is I hope there is truth to "what goes around comes around". Beware of this outfitter!!!! Please feel free to call me if you want even more details. Mark Tipton- 979-249-3541.

Here is what Randy (the owner/operator/outfitter) promised over the phone and most of which was listed on the contact he signed. I have a copy.1. pick up at airport upon arrival.2. Lodging would be cottages (if finished - under construction) if not - motel, all lodging included in the price of the package hunt.3. 1 on 1 guide4. 3 meals a day5. spot and stalk hunting - no blinds (hunt tailored to my request)6. opportunity at a 150 class whitetail or better and a 180 class muley or better.7. Hunt on Sunday - total 7 day hunt8. no more than 6 hunters in camp at any time9. fresh stands - not hunted previously10. outfitter (Randy) accessible to hunters at anytime during the hunt. Here is what really happened.1. landed in Saskatoon airport at 4:00PM. No one there to pick us up. Started calling the outfitter every hour on the hour. Outfitter and his wife repeatedly informed us that someone was on their way. Later found out that no one was on their way (they basically lied and admitted that they lied). Finally picked-up at airport at 11:30pm (7.5 hours late).2. Outfitter had finished 2 cottages (square buildings with no running water - did have unregulated wood burning stoves). Third cottage under construction but not usable. The outfitter had overbooked and did not have a place for us to stay. Asked us to pay for a motel room and he would reimburse us later, which he never did.3. I was set up with 1 on 1 guide. My guide was the outfitter's younger brother. He said he had 6 years experience guiding, he also said he was 17 years old. Correct me if my math is wrong, but that means he was guiding at age 11! The first morning we could not locate my guide, he overslept. Randy's wife called and had to tell me where he was so that I could wake him up. The other 2 hunters in our group were setup with (1) first year guide - again not as stated in the contract.4. Meals - breakfast consisted of 1 ice cold fried egg, one piece of toast and 1 frozen orange juice in a squeeze box with a straw. The other meals were just as bad if not worse. The hardest thing was trying to figure out where they were going to take us to eat. None of the staff seemed to know. We would just drive around to different houses until we found a house with food (mostly left overs) and then we would eat.5. I repeatedly asked my guide to take me out to spot and stalk - as previously agreed upon with Randy. (I have hunted in Canada for 10 years and always stand hunted. I did not want to stand hunt anymore.) My guide just kept bringing me to stands. This may have been due to the fact that he had broken his leg a few months prior and could barely walk!6. No one in our party saw any good animals, and 1 above avg. mule deer was brought into camp by another hunter. Several small mule deer were taken by other hunters. The only whitetail taken was a very promising (should never have been shot) 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 year old taken by a native boy (no hunters). The deer was shot 5-6 times with a .22 caliber rifle. The native indian guides got a big kick out of that.7. Our scheduled 7 day hunt ended after a day and a half - we had seen and heard enough - and left.8. There were 4 hunters in our group but one could not make it at the last minute. When we arrived there were already 5 hunters in camp making 8 hunters total. After the 5 hunters left, 7 more arrived making 10 hunters in camp. Remember we were promised only 6 hunters in camp at any one time.9. We were all brought to stands that all had deer killed out of them prior to our arrival. Not one stand was clean - as promised by the outfitter. When asking my guide if they had any clean stands he said yes, I requested that he bring me to one, but he never did.10. Last but not least, Randy had told me on the phone that he would be accessible to all of the hunters anytime during the hunt, just in case anything came up. We arrived in camp on Saturday morning and met Randy at breakfast and I saw him again at midday. We had communicated to him earlier that we would like to talk about what was going on, and he acknowledged he would talk with us. We did not see him again until 1pm /Sunday when he came in and (without even saying another word) asked us for money. We immediately asked to speak with him outside, he came out. When one of our party calmly started to express our concerns about what was going on, Randy bursted into profanity and started to yell and scream at this person. We immediately asked to have a ride back to town and ended our hunt. All of these things happened in a day and a half, it was a horrible experience. I would not recommend this outfitter to anyone.

I was scheduled to hunt the week of November 27 through December 3, 2005. The outfitter was 8 hours late picking me up at the airport. I was told we would have one guide per hunter we had one guide for two hunters. I was told that there would be no more than six hunters in camp the week were there, there was eleven. Our guide while friendly, was as he said, guiding for the first time. We stayed in our guides house and this was the best accommodations we saw. The rest of the facility was very poor. I hunted the North Camp the third week in November 2005 and mostly saw A LOT of small bucks, i.e., 110 inch 8 points and smaller. The other 8 hunters in the camp mostly saw the same but a nice nontypical that might go 160-170 was killed on the last day. All the other hunters killed bucks that were 130s or less and that was the biggest deer they saw. I got the impression after hunting sun up to sun down for 6 days that the area has been overhunted and the chances of seeing anything over 140 or extremely remote. The guides were friendly and hardworking but seemed to be clueless about what deer one might expect to see at the various stand locations.Weather conditions were good for most of the week. In fact, it was -5 degrees F the one morning we headed out.

(Long Review) There were quite a few comments/reports on this site that refuted what I previously stated. I think it is appropriate that I give details as to what happens and let you be the judge of this outfitter. For starters, I am a very experienced hunter who has taken numerous outfitted hunts during the last 15 years and have been hunting deer for 30 years. I have hunted Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, and Georgia as well as my recent Saskatchewan Hunt. I have been on successful and unsuccessful outfitted hunts, but I am grading this hunt from what the outfitter could control. The best outfitter I have ever hunted with I was unsuccessful on my first hunt with him and have gone back two times and I am brining my wife this fall for my fourth trip.In my pre-planning and searching for an outfitter. I spoke with Randy on three separate occasions about his hunt offering (please note this is what we were told before we got to Saskatchewan in phone conversations). He informed me that he had ample stands that would not be overhunted and that your primary stand would be new and never hunted until you got there. Further, for my hunting partner (my father) it was important that he have someone sit with him for the first two or three days of the hunt to help judge the animals we were supposed to be seeing. We were told to expect to see a 140 Class or better buck daily and at least two 160 or better bucks on a 6 day hunt. I asked what a realistic shot to him was – he commented that it could be a 300 yard shot from a steady rest at a standing deer – I felt this was fair. All stands would have a chair in them to sit on that you could shoot from. He further said you could take a Mule Deer or Whitetail for the cost of the hunt and then a 2nd Animal could be taken for $1000 less than the cost of the hunt. We thought this was fine and would figure it out as the hunt unfolded if we wanted to take a 2nd animal. We were told we would be staying in a B&B with three meals a day and drinks available in the room throughout the hunt. We knew we wouldn’t see very many deer and we were prepared for long, all-day stints in the stands. The land would be farmland fields intermixed with river bottom and brush/treelines that we would be hunting. We were to be picked up at the Saskatoon Inn by 10:00am Sunday Morning and brought to the camp around Noon to sight in our rifles and then be taken to the areas we would be hunting to familiarize ourselves with the lay of the land before the first hunting morning. We were not picked up at Saskatoon until 2:00pm by a young man who brought his 18 month old son. 6 Calls to the outfitter went unanswered on Sunday inquiring about the whereabouts of our ride. This little boy proceeded to jump on our bags, take out our optics, go through our backpacks and personal belongings after repeated talking too’s to stop. They had to stop at McDonalds for lunch – where he proceeded to throw French Fries at my father. After 30 minutes of this it got really old and we about had it when he started jumping on the gun cases. We got to camp and were introduced to Randy Armstrong and taken to our accommodations. The accommodations were a rough trailer that had numerous holes in the walls and air mattresses for beds (not a problem). The issue with the air mattresses were 1/3 full of air and no equipment could be found to blow them up. My father is recovering from back surgery two years ago and sleeping on what amounts to the floor was not what was expected and our requests for the air pumps went unanswered and ignored. We were taken to shoot and sight in the rifles late and brought back for dinner. Dinner consisted of leftover 3 day old cold pizza. Not quite the impression we expected on our first encounters. The stands on the outside looked solid and well built – the chairs were non-existent and you were dropped off about an hour before first light and picked up at dark with your seat being a two by four. Also, when my father asked about someone sitting with him – he was told that was not going to happen. The first day we were told we would have someone check on us at mid-day and bring lunch. We were checked on at 3:00pm – 2.0 hours before dark and brought lunch after having breakfast at 5:00am. We were also using a borrowed truck as the vehicles were ALL damaged and in the shop according to our guide Rocky. 2x4’s were used to brace the seats and hold them up in place. DAY 1 – no animal sightings by any of us. The hunters from Mossy Oak who I spoke with for about 30 minutes as we waited for a ride, were not happy. They were told the same as I about having stands reserved for you and never hunted before you got there.DAY 2 – Our guide was a no show in the morning and Randy took us to our stands. He said he would pick us up at 11:30 – Noon and we would go to a new spot. Well at 3:00pm when nobody showed up I started walking to the nearest town or house to get help to take me back to the Reserve. The entire morning had locals or reservation members driving my entire hunting area trying to bump deer from their bed. It was a complete waste of time. At 4:15pm – a car came down the road which was my guide. He informed me that Randy had “forgotten about us and they were bringing me lunch.” I told them to take me back to the trailer – they wouldn’t for all kinds of reasons and they put me in a spot they said “wasn’t very good (hadn’t seen a deer in a month), but you never know what might happen” in a 2000 acre bean field. My dad had been gotten from his stand at 1:00pm and told they had found a 170+ Class buck. They raced to where they had the buck cornered in a wood lot in the center of a big field. They had three trucks circling the wood lot to hold the buck in its spot and had run this buck for miles to the point he was exhausted. The buck was a 2 ½ year old 120 Class 9 pt – my dad said he wasn’t interested in taking a deer like this by chasing it down with a truck. Well, the natives (Randy’s Uncle, Brother and Brother-In-Law (Game Warden of the Reserve)) decided to “have some fun” and chased the deer further with the truck. They ended up running over the buck with the truck and then had the audacity to tell my father he would need to shoot it to put it out of its misery and TAG IT!! He said no and passed the rifle to them to shoot it. This is the Deer my father supposedly passed on that was mentioned in an earlier post. That evening they didn’t show up to pick up my father until 7:00pm – dark is 5:30pm. The guide said he got lost trying to find the stand – COME ON! Dad and I were both pissed by the way things were being handled and the guide (Rocky) realized it. I spoke with the Mossy Oak guys that evening and they informed me they were not sure they would return after hearing what we told them plus they were not having a positive experience. Still No deer sightings for me or the Mossy Oak guys.DAY 3 – We hunted the same area we did on the first morning and I was told to watch this huge field behind me to see if any deer would cross. They said they would be running hard from the river bottom to my area and be prepared for a running shot – this area was about ½ mile across and I didn’t buy it. I did see two small bucks a yearling spike and a little 8pt (maybe 12” wide) in the morning. The guide came and moved me after the morning, but told me the stand was being “saved for the Mossy Oak hunters and if they come to the stand you need to leave.” They further said to just walk down the hill and you will find another stand to hunt in….That afternoon I shot a 181” B&C Gross Muley with a 3” drop tine following a yearling doe. That night we caped him and I brought the antlers back to the camper. The hunting consultant in camp said that evening “You did good by taking this buck, you probably won’t see anything better the way things are going.” He further said “This operation is really rough around the edges and is going to have to improve dramatically for me to send anybody back. People cannot be left in stands or not have meals provided when promised a full service hunt.”We ran out of drinking water that evening in the camper and none was brought back to the house during our stay until the morning we left.DAY 4 – At breakfast, Randy approaches me at the table and says – Mike you owe me the extra dollars for your mule deer. I said you told me that I could take either and then a 2nd one would be a fee. He said well that is not the case anymore and you owe me extra dollars. The hunting consultant even piped in and said “You told me we could take either for the hunt cost as Mike states.” I told him, I will not be hunting anymore since I have no more tags and have ended my hunt with the mule deer. That ended the conversation, but I was not spoken too for the rest of the hunt by the outfitter. Dad asked if they had any jam or jelly to go with the toast – they brought him two jars – both were mold filled and fermented when opened. Rocky told dad that morning on the drive when asked about the deer seen at these spots he had been placed at – he said they had taken good bucks there. When further prompted it had been years earlier or early November/Late October _ 6 weeks to one month earlier – but nothing had been seen since. We were supposed to be brought lunch – Dad hunted all day and nobody saw him or brought him anything and I didn’t see anyone all day at the trailer. Luckily, he brought snacks and water bottles we had brought with us because he felt this was going to be a problem. Dad was again picked up a 1.5 hours after dark and brought to the trailer (30 minutes from hunting area) at 7:30pm – 2 hours after dark. He did see a 8pt that would score 120 – 125 B&C, but elected to pass wanting something older. Dinner that night consisted of 5 day old Turkey (the guide Rocky) said they had this the previous Saturday.Day 5 – Dad hunted the entire day without seeing anything. We had discussed that morning having someone take us to the airport on the 6th Day of our hunt. We felt that since they were hours late and having numerous execuses with every question asked we should probably head back when we could – or have enough time to hire a cab to take us back. Randy was a no show that morning or afternoon.DAY 6 – We were taken back to the airport at 10:00am and were able to catch an earlier flight back home. The food was poor, the accommodations were below average (they were dry and we had heat), the camp equipment was in various points of disarray, these are the things the outfitter could control. The weather was much too warm for Canada, but to say if we had stayed we would have gotten our animal – there is much more to this story than that. You place your trust in the outfitter and his employees when you go on out of state and in this case an out of the country hunt – we felt there was no regard for our well being and after we got there we were just a number. You be the judge - can you kill a big animal - sure, but for me a hunt is so much more than killing an animal. It is the total experience and this outfitter failed miserably in my opinion. Please call me or email with any questions.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail and Mule Deer

I hunted Nov.21 through Nov.27, 2004 for whitetail. The weather was very warm for that time of year. We had 5 hunters in camp, 4 of whom had kills - 3 mule deer and one whitetail scoring from 148 to 167. I personally saw 4 whitetail bucks better than 140, and one well over 180, but it was out of range. I also saw a mule deer over 200. Overall I was very satisfied with the hunt and plan to return. I also have recommended this outfitter to several other hunters.

Animals Hunted: whitetail or muley

Guides: This outfit has guided hunters for four or five years, and they're still learning, particularly on mule deer.Other hunters: A TV crew left after sitting in stand for one morning, if I heard correctly, and then they went to a high-fence preserve to get their so-called hunting video. Another hunter in camp killed a 180 muley on Day 3 and didn't hunt after that. His dad hunted five days and passed at least one 120 to 130 class whitetails. Weather was unseasonably warm for Canada in early Dec. -- reaching 40F every day but the last day when I was the only hunter who had stayed. On that last day, which was nice and cold, I half of the 12 bucks I saw during the 6-day hunt, including the three biggest bucks. The widest muley I saw was 26". I also passed on a narrow but extremely heavy muley. I passed on a 130-class whitetail and saw two big bucks, one was probably 160+. The big ones were out of range and moving across fields as we were changing hunting areas. I had several customers take this hunt earlier, and they took some very good bucks, including whitetails scoring 168 and 165. A muzzleloader killed a 178, and he emailed me a summary of his October hunt, when he killed a 42" moose, a 5x5 elk, and his 178 deer in a week. Randy said I was the only hunter who hunted the whole hunt and did not kill a deer. He reported taking You can see pictures on trusave.com/youngscouts

I went on my first ever guided hunt in 2002 and got a nice little black bear and a calf moose. Weather had been horrible, but Dustin took us all over the place in spite of the conditions. Each of the animals I killed was the first I'd seen and I'm a meat hunter, so I shoot first, ask questions later. In 2004 I saw a decent bull moose on my 2nd day and did not hesitate to take him immediately. Again, I'm a meat hunter.Everything was great and I had an awesome time each time I went. These guys are a hard-working bunch and very pleasant to spend time with...if you can't get along with them, then you can't get along with anyone!

The first then he wanted this year was the money even before we got to the camp,he was out of money and had just had 5 hunters in the week before and at $2,000 each that is $10 thousand dollars to go threw in a week. We were to stay with him at a camp site but had to stay in a hotel in town and they would pick us up the first 2 days was not bad but by the 3 day they were late to pick us up we did not get to the stand until about a hour after day light,he had went up on the hunting fees $300 to start with and said we could get another deer tag for $300 more dollars that seem to be a good deal at the time so on the 4 day we both shot a small buck because we were not seeing much at the stands, the next morning on the way to the stand he told us that they would be another $500 each or the hunt was over we told him no would not pay him more for the hunt we had paid him for just because he had went out and lost his money at the game tables the night before, and he would not give us back the money for the other buck tags...

I hunted Nov 28 to Dec 4 in Saskatchewan on the Sweetwater Indian Reservation for Whitetail and muledeer. The weather was bad, no snow, warm weather, but the details of the hunt by the outfitters were poor.Everything promised on the hunt that the outfitter could control was not delivered. He can talk the talk but couldn't walk the walk. I killed a 180 Class muley, but out of 5 hunters in camp including 2 Mossy Oak camera crews and a hunting consultant, I was the only one who killed a deer. The hunting consultant told us he would have difficulty sending clients to this outfitter because of the way the operation was run. The Mossy Oak camera crews left after day 3 because of the way the outfit was handling things.

Magnum Outfitting is an exclusive whitetail hunting opportunity. We hunted early rut, second week Nov 2004. I shot a 140BC weighing in near 300 and my hunt partner shot a 170BC weighing close to 400 lbs. We saw a lot of deer each day. The cold days were the best.On arrival to the accommodations, (a quick 3 hour ride from Regina airport) I was pleased to see we were the only hunters booked for that week. We had 100% attention and time of the guide the entire week. I later learned the guide prefers smaller groups of 2-3 hunters per week. We had participation in all aspects and activities related to our hunt if we choose. We saw our stands, woods, deer activity/sign prior to the first day of hunting. We were asked numerous times during the week if we where happy and comfortable w/ stands, accommodations, etc. If we had special needs, they were met. The guide checked on us in the bush (w/ small hand held radio equipment) each day around Noon. This safety precaution was very important to me being from the south.Upon deer harvest our guide handle the animal transport, cleaning, butchering, and later caping/packaging for the flight home.If Canadian Whitails are your thing, give Magnum Outfitting and Darrell Chmil an opportunity. I hunted Camp Grayling in 2004. This was the year with the latest spring in 50 years. The first week of June and the float planes were iced in. Unable to get to their fly-in camps we had to camp along a dirt road. This was their plan "B". I was hoping for a remote outpost camp but because of the weather I was listening to trucks drive by my stand. I saw plenty of bears in stand. That part of northern Sask. has no shortage of bears. Would like to try them again.

When booking this hunt we were told to expect 5-6 people in camp, upon arrival we found there were eleven. The guides, although very nice people, told us they had never been to these woods. When five of us were sent to the outpost camp, there was no drinking water available. Nor was there any food to pack lunches during the ten hour stays on stand. Water arrived two days later (outfitter said it was a helpers fault). Equipment was in unexcusable condition, with all three outfitter quads breaking down and leaving us stranded on more than one occasion. When bears were shot, they were placed on an uncovered trailer and pulled through the mud. By the time they arrived at camp there was four inches of slop covering the animals. I have no doubt Jim means well but until conditions and equipment improve, I would not recommend this hunt to anyone. All of this was addressed prior to our departure and everything was blamed on one or another of his helpers. There are plenty of bear 'guides' out there- choose wisely.

The food was excellent and the outfitter bent over backwards to accomodate us. I would definately recommend this hunt and plan on going back. We flew, but next time I think I will take the extra day and drive there. One thing I would ask of him is that he makes the stands in the trees more comfortable.

The biggest problem we had was that the rut was over and by the time we got there the stands were overhunted. Our guide was a first year guide that doesnt hunt. I was very dissapointed with that to say the least. They have 400-500 square miles to outfit in but they use too little of it. When I go back to Sask., I will not go any later than thanksgiving. We went the week after and the deer werent moving. I saw some of the deer shot the week before and there were some bruisers but by the time our hunt started things shut down. We had 6 people in our camp and we all got bucks but 3 of them werent very big. Two of my buddies got nice bucks, a 135 class and a 125 class. One guy from Louisiana got a dandy 9pt with a droptine. I want to go back to Sask. someday, but proboblay not here because if I pay that kind of money, I expect to get an experienced guide. Outfitter Review: Nipekamew River Outfitters - SK

Outfitter / Owner: Ken O'Rielly/John Klemens

Hunter: Bob King

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

I hunted in Nov. 1999. This outfitter was not prepared and his success rate was less than 25% and it would have been lower if not for some of the hunters shooting very small bucks. Truck broke down taking me out my first morning. Almost all of the deer were shot out of the same blind. Territory problems with bordering outfitter. All they did was complain about the previous hunters.Don't waste your time and money. when I got back to my hotel at the end of the hunt most of the hunters I talked with had 75% success rate or better. I got some good outfitter contacts if anyone would be interested. I do not consider a hunt unsuccessful if I did shoot anything but they were just running hunters thru and taking the money.

Outfitter Review: Red Pheasant Outfitters - Saskatchewan

Outfitter / Owner: Charles Meechance

Hunter: Philip Rutt

Animals Hunted: Whitetail deer

This was my first trip to Sask. I booked a hunt with Red Pheasant but was farmed out to another outfitter when I got there that charges $1500 less. I didn't see the big buck I was looking for, but that's hunting. I thought I got a raw deal by being sold to another for a profit. Thats not a very good way to treat a client. I will be going back to Sask. but not with Red Pheasant Outfitters.
