Animals Hunted: Elk
Cody Carr Hunting Adventures (CCHA) This hunt was a gift from my wife for my 50 th Birthday. It was supposed to be a trip of a lifetime for me (whether or not I harvested an Elk, I was looking forward to an amazing experience). The reality could not have been further from this. My wife arranged for my best friend to join me on this hunt; all in all, it cost us over $10,000 each (including all incidentals, with $6125 going to CCHA). While harvesting an Elk would have been the best experience ever, understanding that there are no guarantees, we were at least expecting to have a positive experience (especially after all of the $$$ we invested in this trip). Putting the Elk aside, we had such a bad experience with this outfitter that we wanted to make sure no one ever experiences what we experienced with CCHA, and never spends a wasted dime with CCHA. To keep it as short as possible, I’ll provide the following: -An employee from CCHA called us multiple times in the months leading up to our trip to hard-sell their gear store (online at first). Even after explaining that we are both experienced lifelong hunters/archers, have hunted Elk before in various environments, and have plenty of camping/survival/first aid gear and training, as well as the gear to go with it, he continued the hard sell. Once we arrived, we were taken to their brick and mortar store to continue the hard-sell in person about how we NEEDED a bunch of gear. -A few days prior to our arrival, at Cody Carr’s recommendation and hard push, I purchased an over the counter bear tag due to his claim that they’d been having a “high volume” of bear sightings (we saw absolutely NO bears, sign or indication that there were any bears to be seen or found). -After we finally arrived at the lodge, Cody advised us that we would be going with his best guide to a new PRIVATE 18,000 acre land lease in Missoula that was ready to hunt. There was nothing “PRIVATE” about this location, nor was it ready to hunt. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Myself, my buddy, our guide and guide assistant took the 2-hour trip after hunting some public land the first morning. That first hunt consisted of driving up a logging road at dawn, making several calls and a short hike in the area of the truck, then spending 3 hours driving logging roads looking for bear and elk. Once at the new “private-property,” the assistant guide and another helper were supposed to set up camp while we took a side-by-side to hunt. We cruised around and glassed all afternoon not seeing a single animal. While doing this and speaking with our guide, it became abundantly clear that this property had NOT been scouted and other than a few rides through with a side-by-side, no one had any idea where the activity was. When we got back to camp, we still had some set up to do, because one of the guide assistants had forgotten some key items for the tent setup. We ended up setting up camp with the guides and eventually had to run to town another day to purchase the missing items, which cost us additional loss of hunting time. So, for the next 4 days we stuck it out with our poor guides, attempting to narrow down this 18,000- acre plot and where the activity was. Add to this, that we had to move CCHA’s wall tent two more times because we determined that there was way more public pressure then described by Cody. Had we left the tent in the original location, it would have resulted in our gear being stolen or damaged. Additionally, we left a trailer parked on the road (for the side-by-side) and the locals called the game wardens on CCHA. When this happened, Cody called his guide, interrupting our hunt to find out what we did?!?! It was because the locals were pissed that CCHA’s trailer and side-by-side were there. What should have happened was Cody calling the game warden directly and not his guides, interrupting our hunt. Although the property is “private,” the owner allows day-use which includes hunting, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and dog walking. So all-in-all the first four days of our hunt consisted of about 4 actual hours hunting in the woods, with our bows in hand. The rest of our time was spent setting up CCHA’s tent (to be used for the rest of season) and scouting the property. We saw tons of side-by-side traffic, mountain bikers, dog walkers and lots of hunters on this “exclusive” private property. -Once back at the lodge, we discovered that out of 11 hunters there that NOONE had even seen an elk, forget taking a shot on one. This remained true for the entire week. In fact, a few hunters had left their trip early, accepting the financial loss rather than stay to completion, because their experience was so horrible. We also discovered that out of 10 CCHA hunters the week before, all failed to harvest an elk as well. -On day 7, we discovered an awesome tree stand that was placed by a CCHA guide, and hidden from other guides. This was just more evidence of total mismanagement by this outfitter. -We discovered that the local elk population (per Cody Carr’s testimony) has been decimated by wolves. So much so that any reputable outfitter cannot, in good faith, sustain any elk hunting opportunity in this area. In fact, the locals go elsewhere because the elk population in this area has been so negatively affected. We tried speaking to Cody’s father while we were there (since Cody himself was away hunting), to express our frustrations at our experience. The only response we received was, “I guess you have to hunt harder,” and our concerns were completely dismissed. -It was brought to our attention that even the guides were frustrated, because they were sick of having hopeful hunters arrive week after week, knowing that there was no chance of them harvesting a kill. -We did reach out to Cody Carr in an effort to give him a chance to address what we felt was a completely unacceptable experience. We basically worked for CCHA for 4 days, setting up camp that would be used the rest of the season; we scouted his 18,000 acres of unscouted “private” property; we went back to town to gather needed supplies when his guides failed to do it, etc. Cody Carr falsely represented the property and options available for a fair hunting experience. We also discovered that Cody Carr had previously offered prior customers with similar reviews a full refund, in order to have their reviews removed from public forums. Cody Carr is completely aware of what he does NOT offer, and makes a conscious effort to manipulate information available about his outfit, and makes concerted efforts to remove any negative critiques about his outfit in order to continue fooling unknowing customers into investing hard earned money into an experience he cannot provide. -After going back and forth with Cody via email and phone (following our trip), he FINALLY offered what he thought were reasonable options for compensation, none of which would result in any true monetary sacrifice from him or his outfit, but would only result in additional cost to us. He offered: 1) For us to come back this year during rifle season (we are archery hunters; and the additional noise from rifles would only lessen an already non-existent presence of elk in the area), 2) For us to come back for a bear hunt in the spring (again, we saw NO evidence of bear in the area; and how would that address the fact that we were there for Elk), 3) that we return next season for another elk hunt (there is no evidence that there is a sustainable elk population in that area, that would make another trip worth it; also this, again, would lead to additional costs to us- for ex: airfare, hunting permit, etc)., or 4) $1000 (which was about 1-day’s worth of hunting). On our last night we finally had the opportunity to speak with Cody (after having been rudely “dismissed” by his father). We expressed our frustrations; and quite frankly, he didn’t argue with much of what we said. In fact, he supported our findings. That was the time to “make things right,” but he didn’t even make an effort. Offering options that add more cost to the customer, or simply can’t be supported by available resources (such as the current elk population) are not how a reputable outfitter does right by their customers. While we will count our experience with CCHA as a very expensive loss, we just want to make sure that no one else wastes $$$ on such a negative experience. Take your money and your time elsewhere for a fair shot at a positive experience (regardless of a kill).

My group and I recently booked a seaduck hunt with Barneck Outfitters near Easton, Maryland and were disappointed to say the least. The guide, Chris Sherman, was difficult to get in touch with throughout the experience. Although conditions were difficult with snow and ice, Chris led us to believe that we would have a full day hunt of either seaducks or puddle ducks and geese regardless of the weather. Upon the day of the hunt, Chris let us know that we would initially be hunting geese with another guide while ice conditions were examined. This guide informed us that he was not a professional and did not know how to call geese. While I can't complain about the goose hunt, we could've stayed in Tennessee for that type of hunt and a higher bag limit. Chris was unreachable afterwards after multiple calls and texts and the day abruptly ended when we were told by the other guides that the hunt was over and they did not know where Chris was for us to meet him. There was no prorate despite our objections and only after we had left did Chris text back. Needless to say, we were under the impression that we would've at least attempted a puddle duck hunt. Never during the entire hunt did we see or meet Chris.

First let me say that the accommodations and food was excellent. The owners were very nice, and the guide was friendly and always on time. The weather was windy and cold, so we knew the deer would be holed up for a while. The terrain we hunted was mostly open range land, and some coulees with scattered vegetation. We did see quite a few deer, mostly smaller bucks with a couple larger ones once in a while. Since the rut had not started, this was expected. What was not expected was how much time we spent sitting in the truck driving around. We were never more than 100 yards from the truck and did most of the glassing from the truck. During an 8-10 hour day of "hunting", I probably spent 6-7 hours sitting in the truck. Pretty much it was guided "road hunting". Even though it was a rifle hunt, I took my bow and the only time I spent away from the truck was when I took it upon myself to spot and stalk a couple deer. The one time my buddy had a chance at a real nice deer, the guide apparently did not even know where they were as they ended up busting them out and only had to close 200 yards from the 400 we originally saw them at.Since this was our first, and probably last, guided hunt, I was generally disappointed in the fact that there was no real hunting at all. Drive around, glass for deer, drive closer. That was most of the day. Considering we paid a premium to hunt with Armells on private land, I really expected a little more effort at hunting, rather than having what I would consider an overpriced chauffeur. I believe we could have done just as well ourselves with just a map of the area.

Cody Carr runs a first rate operation. I booked my hunt after talking with Cody at the NRA Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA. I had always wanted to do an elk hunt during the rut and Cody just happened to have an opening that coincided with a week that I had vacation scheduled. Upon arriving at the Lodge, Cody paired me with his guide Adam. I can say nothing but excellent things about Adam. He worked extremely hard and was very knowledgeable. Adam put me in position on a great bull the first evening of the hunt and the rest is history. After tagging out on the first day for elk, I spent the remainder of my time in camp hunting whitetails. Cody's other guides were more than willing to help out and put me on stands. I was extremely impressed by Cody and his guides willingness to help out and their work ethic.

i can't say enough good things about my hunting experience with Cody Carrs hunting adventures. When our group arrived the crew was truly welcoming and even excited about our hunt. We did a greet section then gave us a rundown of how they would hope our week to go. Myself not being in the best of shape and wasn't prepared for what kind of terrain we would be hunting in the guide worked with me and made the hunt very doable for me. The guides definitely did there homework in the off season to know what the elk was doing. even after I harvested what I was told to be a once in a lifetime bull. The guide put me on some whitails and I even had my first moose sighting. Having the opportunity to capture all of the sightings and seeing the country was more than I can even explain. After my harvest Cody himself came to congratulate his guide and myself for the successful hunt. He came back later in the week just to visit and check on his guides and us hunters. The camp was outstanding very clean and well taken care of. The food was amazing and fulfilling everyday. All for all I can't wait to book my next hunt with Cody Carrs hunting adventures. Even though this wasn't my first elk hunt but it truly was the best. Thanks

Hunted for 4 days for mule deer and antelope. Did not see a shoot-able buck in either species. The guides were young and inexperienced. Lodging was crude but acceptable. Food was very good. Owner was at camp for 2 days making a video with a celeb for TV and then left w/o checking how other hunters had done. Handling of trophies was not good. The owner spent significant time on the phone to sell me the hunt , then after could careless. He got his money. Another hunter from CA (my hunt partner) had the same experience and said he would not return. Owner seemed to only care about the celebs not the little guy.

We stayed at the East Lodge in Hot Spings MT with Clint. I booked the trip with Brent in Heron MT but was told we will be hunting out of the East Lodge. Didn't know they are over 100 miles apart. Clint is Brent's brother. Everything was very good EXCEPT for the hunting. The guides, lodge & food all where very good & the people are very nice. However the hunting is hard all MT forest. No private land like the web site says. We hiked over 30 miles & glassed hundreds of acers & drove for hours in the truck. We saw very little wildlife. Few whitetail does. That is bad for the $$ and the amount of land you cover. I did take a small 8 point whitetail and that was just by luck. My brother spotted 2 bucks while we were driving in the truck. I would suggest eastern MT on private land. I hunted there in 2007 with Mike Niles. We saw hundreds of deer there & I took nice 9 pointer. 8 other hunters looking for Elk they had no luck. Very little wildlife for the amount of land. I will not go back.

Not a hunt. Was pack trip for photography and fishing in the wilderness. ranch house is rustic, but homey. Sleeping quarters for guests are simple, clean, and comfortable. Showers are hot and beds were clean. Did not go into back country due to wife's fear of heights. The country is more rugged than we anticipated. In lieu of pack trip, had wonderful fishing float trip and guided tours by Len Howells. Len's breakfast sourdough pancakes are superb.

Two of us traveled from south eastern PA to Silverbow Outfitters in NW MT in late Oct 2014 in the hopes of taking a bull elk and fill our deer tag. We were met by Len Howells, who set us up in his bunk house. The lodging was clean and neat, and appointed just as he described. The accommodations were comfortable, showers hot, and lit and heated with propane, all as we expected. Meals were prepared by cook Bonnie, and were more than I expected. Her cooking was top shelf, and not once was I or any of the other hunters at the table unsatisfied. All meals ended in an over the top desert. Our five day hunt usually began with glassing as I signed for a spot & stalk, and our guide Len, was top notch. His background as a trapper absolutely gave me the confidence that he not only knew how to scout game, but to get me on it.. which he did! Without tracking snow, and a number of days of foggy weather, it was difficult to get on the large bull's. I did however tag a nice muley and plan on doing another archery hunt fall of 2015. Was I happy? Yea.. that's why I'm planning another 2500 mile trip to Libby MT.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer, Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear
My name is Brian Dorion and since 2008, Ive hunted with Silver Bow Outfitters a total of 6 times, including this last hunt and have successfully harvested both deer and black bear during my hunts with Silver Bow. Hunting with Len Howells in this section of Montana is not for the weak of heart. This northwestern section of Montana and can be extremely difficult because of the extremely rugged terrain and weather conditions. Being from Florida, hiking those mountains can be difficult. During my hunt, I saw plenty of game, elk, mule deer, white tails, and moose. On this latest trip, I was successful and harvested a big white tail buck, however because of the weather the deer did not go into rut until the weather dropped into the 20s. Silver Bows accommodations are warm and clean. Hunters stay in the bunk house on Lens ranch which is located approximately 5 miles off of the paved road (US Highway 2) and approximately 1.5 miles from the nearest house with electricity. The ranch house and the bunk house are heated and lighted by propane gas. Upon arrival at Silver Bow, myself and all hunters are greeted by either Len Howells or his son Zack (one of Silver Bows guides). All hunters are shown to their quarters and then requested to confirm that their weapons (either bow or rifle) are still zeroed in from the trip. Once this task is completed all hunters enter the ranch house for supper, prepared by Lens cook, Bonny. As I mentioned earlier Ive hunted with Len and Silver Bow 6 times and every time the food has been outstanding, not only good, but plentiful. Once supper is completed, Len holds a group meeting at which time he completes the Montana mandated paperwork for an outfitter then he explains the current hunting conditions in the area. Len also goes over the proper target point on each animal being hunted (i.e. black bear, deer or elk). Len continually informs the hunters that the local weather will always dictate the hunting conditions in the area. In the case of elk hunting, since the Montana general gun season takes place approximately 3 weeks after the elk rut, Len informs all elk hunters the only way to be successful in hunting elk is to hope for a medium snow fall. The snow will be used to track the elk, without snow then hunting elk is left to spot and stalk hunting which can be an extremely difficult and time consuming hunt. In the case of white tail and mule deer, Len explains that the usual white tail rut starts about November 2; however that date is also dependant on the weather conditions. The white tail and mule deer in northwestern Montana do not go into rut until the temperature drops to below 30 degrees. Each hunting day starts off with either Len or Bonny waking up the hunters and cooking breakfast. Breakfast consists of fried eggs, bacon and toast or Lens sourdough flap jacks, or maybe a breakfast casserole, with plenty of either coffee or juice. The food is plentiful and good. Then Bonny or Len puts out sandwich makings and the hunters are instructed to make themselves a sandwich and to grab bags of trail mix, fruit, or snack bars. The food is made available and all hunters are responsible for insuring that they have something to eat for lunch while in the field. At the end of the day, all hunters return to a large meal prepared by Bonny. The menu ranges from steaks to chicken to venison stew to spaghetti and meat sauce, with numerous vegetables and side dishes. Bonny also has a great dessert each and every night. I would recommend Silver Bow Outfitters to anyone interested in Bow hunt for elk in rut or rifle hunters for bear, deer or weather and conditions permitting an opportunity on an elk.

Animals Hunted: Elk, Mule Deer
Hunted the first week of November with Russ Kipp and his Montana High Country Tours. Russ is an anti-social person that for some reason decided to open a hunting lodge. He assigns your guide each day through a round robin and your guide changes everyday day. If you don't like your guide...too bad. I attempted to express to him that I didn't want to hunt with certain guides and he wouldn't even let me finish the sentence before cutting me off and walking away. The guides and Russ sit separate from the hunters and don't socialize with them during meals...supposedly they are talking strategy (which they aren't).The lodge facility is simple with motel quality amenities and has potential should someone else buy it. The food was average and he booked too many hunters (nine) during the week I was there. The only positive thing about this place is it's cheap...about $4300 for a guided hunt and Montana has plenty (too many) of tags available. What I found out though is you get what you pay for. I recommend spending a few extra bucks and going someplace with better hunting and better service. I just can't figure out the attitude of the owner, you'd think he'd want to impress his guests like other lodges and hope for repeat business instead of upsetting them. In speaking with the other guests at the lodge, the nicest description any of them could come up with is the owner was "prickly."The actual hunting was mediocre at best. The few bull elk we saw were small, most barely legal. The one good animal I found, Russ made sure I couldn't go after it, instead sending me to another area where the animals were heading back into the timber well before daylight...and Russ won't allow his guides to pursue them once in the timber.I ended up leaving early. Got tired of the owner's bad attitude. He really didn't seem to care about what the guests thought or were interested in.

Spent 5 days at Swan Mountain Outfitters hunting black bears and saw No bears after walking for 50 miles and riding for 20+ miles. Guides had not scouted the area ahead of time like you would think a professional outfitter would have done. When we did find a nice place with scat and good grass we hardly ever stopped to hunt there and were marched off to the next area of dead falls and no grass. Seems more like we were on a hiking trip with some destination in mind than on a serious hunt. The only chance we ever had of killing a bear would have been if we had run across one in middle of the road mid march at a range of 30 yards or less. Not only didn't the hunting stink but so did the food and the lodging arrangements. Please don't waste your time and money with this outfitter. They are out for your money only. I bet they don't have much repeat business in the hunting department

Before booking the hunt the outfitter said I would have the choice of going in on horseback or we would hunt our way in on foot. Upon arrival I was told to repack my day bag that we were hiking in and no other option was even mentioned. The "hunt" in was an area we didn't even have a tag to legally hunt in so he lied about that. After walking eight miles the first day I was worn out. During the night I couldn't sleep on the cot that was too small and in the morning told him I would not be able to keep up and needed to go back out. He offered no options to continue the hunt and I even had to walk out and was not provided a horse.

I feel this was the worst hunt I have ever been on in my life! The outfitter was totally disorganized he had me change my hunt dates to insure we had snow then when I got there we had to dig one snowmobile out of his neighbors yard to try to get it running of the 3 machines he had we spent the bulk of the time at the snowmobile repair shop the 2 times we got into the field we didn't go for 1/2 hr. before the machines conked out. If that wasn't enough we stopped and talked to every contractor buddy he new to try and drum up construction work for the next summer. When I complained to his son who did the booking after the hunt he didn't deny anything I told him happened "I know my dad I don't doubt it" said he wanted to make it right but was giving me the run around worse then his dad I wouldn't reccomend this oufit to my worst enemy.

Hunted for the eighth time with HVO. Due to the high winter kill of 2010/2011, I wasn't expecting much. Killed a nice 4X4 the first hour of the first day's hunt. As always, the food was first rate, and I had the same outstanding guide as last year, Jesse. Even though I tagged out on the first day, I rode along with another hunter the second day and we saw six 4X4's one of which was a beauty. There were enough young 4X4's that made it through the tough winter that the hunting next year should be good, barring another horrible winter dieoff.

Jamie and Juanita Byrne have top shelf operation going in Ekalaka, Montana. They limit the number of hunters to 6/wk so the area is not over harvested. Jamie and two long-time friends are the guides so the expected level of competence, trust and professionalism is evident. My wife and I missed the first morning of our hunt because of shoddy airline service, but Jamie assured us we would be alright as we arrived just before noon. He got us on animals immediately and I took a 6x5 (if you count the BT's) 25" mulie, 165 BC est. by 4:00PM after an exciting 800 yd stalk thru a winding creek bottom. My wife took her mulie early the next afternoon after we leisurely still hunted some rim rocks and mesas. She passed on several bucks that were chasing does in some wind-sheltered canyons and took her buck w/a 280yd shot as we reached a high plateau that dropped down from the last mesa. Her buck (a 6x4) was wider but had shorter forks. They both had 3-5" extra tines as did a buck another hunter in camp took. The last hunter in camp harvested a 27" buck on the 4th morning during a snow storm. Jamie and Juanita engender great camraderie in camp because they are wonderful hosts. This is a fabulous place to take a spouse or youth because they are so accomodating.

I have been hunting with Milk River Outfitters on and off for the past 10 years. From day 1(one) I have been treated as family by Eric, Jared and their head guide Darren. Everybody always gives 100% towards having you obtain the animal that you want to harvest. The accommodations are warm and comfortable and the food is always plentiful and excellent. I have tried other outfitters but my favorite is and will probably always be, Milk River Outfitters.

Truly a one of a kind place to hunt whitetails. It's a first class operation ran by first class individuals, Eric and his staff really do their homework when it comes to hunting these deer. In my opinion they offer the best chance at killing a Pope & Young deer than anywhere else in the country. You can bet I'll be back in a tree along the Milk River this September!

As a Thophy hunter looking for 150 + antler size, I saw around 20, 8-10 pooint bucks, maybe 60 different total deer, 3 bucks numerous times in the 140+ rack range, within shooting range. 2 -3 bucks in the 150 + range, 2, I couldn't get a kill shot at, one I missed.

I have hunted many places in Texas, but it doesn't compare to the deer I saw in Montana. I have hunted the last 3 years with Milk River Outfitters, and I plan to hunt with them again this year. The folks there are great! They are a family owned outfit and treat you like family from the minute you walk in the door. The food is good and the company even better. They have never failed to put me on a quality deer. I recommend them highly!

I recently had the pleasure of hunting with Anchor P Outfitters on the Hanson family's 9000 acre ranch in White Sulphur Springs, MT; a sixth generation ranch sitting in the foothills of some of Montana's most exclusive and productive elk country. They limited the hunt to just a few hunters at a time, so as to insure not only light hunting pressure, but the highest chances of connecting with top quality animals.Lon was truly a consummate professional and made every possible effort to assist with, and make recommendations to, insure not just a good hunt, but a great one. More significantly, he possess the rare ability to meld his professional guiding skills with a very personable demeanor. During our hunt, Lon evinced a cunning ability to spot, track and predict the actions of game, while concomitantly exemplifying the greatest standards and traditions of a true sportsmen. At all times he remained a very considerate guide making sure that I was able to hunt at my comfort level, and remaining positive and energetic through inclement weather and long days.During our hunt, I saw some of the largest Elk I have ever seen in the wild and both me and my hunting buddy were was able to harvest trophy bulls. http://www.anchorpoutfitters.com/

I booked a bow hunt for elk and Mule Deer with tim Walkowiak. This was the third trip but the other 2 trips were rifle hunts for Mule Deer and Antelope. For the first time, my wife came along as a non hunter. On the second trip, 2 members of our group had issues and had to cancel after the deposit was made. Tim had no issues with the use of the past deposit being applied to the cost of this hunt. Tim also gave a discount on the fee for non hunters. How many Elk? Not an Elk was seen while hunting. How many Mule Deer? Hundreds. Even took a monster 6X6 Muley on the 4th. day of the hunt. I was able to walk some of the nicest country I've had the chance to hunt in. I would have liked to had a chance at an Elk but with wild animals there are no guarantees. This hunt is nothing like on a preserve.I will be going back to Montana and will be booking the hunt with Tim.

I had a quality hunt. I hunted Bull Mountains area 590 with Musselshell Outfitters and saw several bulls in the 340 to 380 inch range. I had a shot but could not connect. I am booking to go back in 2011 and try to get the big one. We saw one bull that would go over 400 inches and several hunters saw it. I was within 80 yards of this bull and the other smaller bulls in the 320 range were 10 yards of me but the big one was just out of range. This is a great area for big bulls and Randy knows how to get you in close for a shot. If you really like to hunt and have the patience you can take some quality animals in this area. We also chased some quality mule deer. I saw a 180 inch whitetail but my interest was really elk.

outfitter said had been scouting for weeks before arrival. All we did was walk the same four logging roads. Seen one bear and guide called my son off it said a 5'8" chocolate was not big enough. That was the first day and never saw another bear. Spent no time glassing and guide walked fast enough on roads that my track star son gave up trying to keep up. Other hunter in camp was also very dissatisfied. Cooking and food was great. Guide/owner ask on third day if I had any idea's! Very disappointing was graduation trip for my son before going in the service. Dont waste your money! No scouting no backup plan and really acted like did not want to find a bear at all.

This year was my 6th hunt with the Milk River Outfitters. I hunted on private ranch leases near the Powder River. We saw many nice 4x4 mule deer. I was able to take a nice 165 inch 4x4. On previous hunts near the Milk River I killed whitetails scoring from 140 to 160 inches. This is a family run operation with brothers Eric and Jared heading up the guiding. I don't think you could get a better all around hunting experience.

My 2009 bowhunt with Milk River Outfitters was a great hunt, even though I did not take a buck. I passed on a couple of good bucks that would have gone P&Y but was holding out for one of three 145+ that were using the field I hunted most of the trip. It just didn't happen for a shot opportunity on one of those bucks but not because MRO didn't put in the time and effort. They are great about moving stands, and setting up new stands to adjust to the wind and deer movement. The deer are not pressured at all because MRO has so many places to hunt and they are good about constantly scouting to see which fields the big deer are using and putting you on there. This was my third trip with MRO and first two trips I took a good 9 point and really nice 10. I would have to say also that the quality of bucks there has gotten better over the years as well, not that it was bad before at all, but saw more 140+ deer this year than before. Guy in camp with me shot a great 150+ plus 9 pt on this trip as evidence of that. The last thing I would say is just won't find better people to hunt with and I've hunted with probably 10 different outfitters in 6 states. They're just good people with no pretense who want you have to a good hunt and good time while you're there.

I had an outstanding hunt and ended up not shooting an animal. The camp accommodations were excellent and the food was better than expected for hunting camp. I focused on one large 160" class 8 point buck but could not close the distance needed to make a kill shot. However, I was able to pass on several 140" class deer so it was a very satisfying experience. I will be hunting with Milk River Outfitters next year and for years to come. AAA rating for their hunting operation.

Good number of resident elk seen on private leases. Hunt was over on first evening. Harvested a decent 6x6. Can't comment on overall animal quality after only hunting one day. The hunt was fantastic! I took my daughters, ages 13 & 15, on their first deer hunt. I wanted them to have a good overall experience so that they would enjoy hunting and want to go each season. Musselshell Outfitters provided a very quality experience and more. Every facet of the hunt - camp, food, number of animals, guides - was first class! I think is says it all when, upon completion of the hunt, I asked each of my daughters to rate the hunt on a 1-10 scale with all things considered and each girl gave Musselshell Outfitters a "10." I was very pleased with Randy Higgins, his guide, doug and the entire experience as a whole. I have younger sons and when they are of age I will no doubt take them back to Musselshell Outfitters.Steve Fine - Olympia, WA

My hunting buddy Ken and I had applied for an Antelope hunt in Wyoming and did not get drawn in a limited quota area. We were disappointed and as a back up plan we contacted Len Howells, owner of Silver Bow Outfitters, Libby Montana in regards to a Fall Black Bear hunt. He advised us of the difficulties of fall Black bear hunting and we decided the risks were acceptable and booked a hunt. When we arrived at the ranch we were met by Len, Donna and the rest of the family /staff, and showed where we would be staying. Our accomadations met with our approval in the form of gas lighting and generator powered lights, satelite TV, hot showers. Once we were settled in we were instructed as to our major mode of transportation (horseback) and were then required to sight in our rifles. We then had an orientation pertaining to shot placement on black Bears finished off with dinner and a good nights sleep. Our hunt started off with about a seven mile scenic ride up the mountain where we glassed the berry fields for bear. It only took about five minutes to spot our first bear but he wasn't quite big enough to be a shooter, before the day was over we saw four more bears and messed up a stalk on big color phase bear when the wind swirled at the wrong time. We saw two more bears the next day and the weather kept us off the mountain on the third day. We saw a lot of beautiful country over the next two days but weren't able to connect on a bear. The hunt met all our expectations with the exception shooting an animal, but thats why they call it hunting. Everyone at Silver Bow Outfitters worked hard to make our hunt a success and Donna is an excellent cook and we did not go hungry. Overall Len is is a knowledgable hard working outfitter that has every intention of making your hunt safe, successful, and memorable. He was disappointed that we didn't get a bear, and made us an offer to allow us to come back for a spring Bear hunt at a Fraction of his usual hunting rate, so we are going back in May of 2011.

This was my SEVENTH hunt with HVO, and probably my best. The muleys were rutting, and the action was so fast, I passed up a 24" 4X4 the first morning. Saw 2 or 3 shooter bucks every day, and saw SEVEN 4X4's in one hour! Ended up shooting a very high racked and massive bodied 4X4 on day three, As always, the food was outstanding. Harriet, the cook is great in the kitchen. The outfitter, Tracy Weyer, shot a 330 class elk while I was there. Success rate was near or at 100%. I'll go back again soon.

Long rides to hunting area because most senior guides got closest areas. Rides were 1-1.5h to and from every day. Not as advertised, at least as far as ''private land''...and ''experienced hunting guides'' are concerned. The people that work at the lodge are great. The food was good and there was lots of fun with playing cards etc. at night. However, I think this place is more of a ''Dude Ranch'' than a Big Game Outfitter. The celebrities that they brag about visiting would fit right in. A serious hunter however, is out of his element here.''So I would say save your money and frustration and choose another outfitter. These folks said they have private land to hunt. BUT, we hunted 2 canyons on public land for 5 days right along side local hunters and out of staters as well. We failed to even get a shooting opportunity at either Elk or Deer. We saw a few Deer and I never saw an Elk.I tried to get partial credit . Donna agreed to at first but the reneged. No luck there either. If you do choose this outfitter make sure they guarantee that you will be hunting PRIVATE LAND...and with an experienced guide.....we didn't and it costs us.I hope this review saves some other hunter from the same experience that we encountered. Thanks ,

I recently hunted a drop camp with a few friends from Cabela's October 2009. I was happy with all aspects of the camp that was set up for us. The meals were excellent and all gear was in good condition. The camp was placed in a valley where I didn't see another hunter all week. I harvested a nice bull the first hour of the opening day. One of the other hunters shot a big cow the third day of our hunt and the other didn't fill his tag. I also shot my first coyote the second day of the hunt making for a great add on. After notifying the lodge that I had shot an elk Sherri was at the drop camp within hours. I was pleased at how quick she had came to get my elk out. Great drop camp for a couple of friends who want to save a few bucks by doing most of the work/hunt themselves.

Edwin bills the elk hunt as 100% shot opportunity. I was the only hunter that saw an elk. I got lucky. If you go, you gotta go the first week or the last week. The quantity of elk seen is minimal. I was the only hunter to take an elk and in 2009, through the first 4 weeks out of 6 only two other elk were taken. Basically, a 25% success ratio. Mine was the largest elk taken in camp for the year. The mule deer are small and not worth paying since you have a lesser chance of getting an elk. They are part of the Clare Prophet cult and are trying to sell the business. They use a TON of garlic in the food. I like garlic, but the cookies tasted like garlic and everyone was sick. Even the guides won't eat the food.

These guys work hard. I booked a hunt with them after doing some research and talking to Tim and references. I paid extra for a 1-on-1 hunt so my 10 year-old son could tag along. BE IN SHAPE. I had Conner pushing us up and down the mountains for the first 3 days of the hunt. The first afternoon we tracked right up to a bedded cow elk at 15 yards or so. Bumped another group about half a mile down the trail later, but never saw them. Saw a few mule deer during the hunt that were to small and several elk to far away. We were there for Thanksgiving week in 2008. Incredibly tough and thick country. Be advised that this is a public land hunt. We bumped into other hunters on 2 separate occasions and you also have to deal with the occasional road hunter. The animals are there, but weather and hunting pressure play a huge factor in that country. It was not as cold as we were hoping and there was not enough snow in lower elevations. These guys took great care of my son while we were there as well.

I confirmed this with the outfitter. 30 days prior to hunt I sent the balance of $5,000.00. This was a 10 day hunt. I never saw an elk or an elk track. I hunted dry ground. There was no water any place. We were never near river bottom land as was advertised. This was the worst hunt that I have ever experienced in over 50 years of hunting.

I have recently retired after 20 years in the outfitting business in Alberta and given my experience, I feel qualified to "read between the lines." I could not have been any more impressed with every detail of the Milk River Outfitters operation. When I arrived at camp, both Jared and his guide, Darren came out of the building and greeted me like a long lost friend. They offered to take me out right then as there was still a couple of hours of light left. This was the day before my scheduled hunt but they were ready to go for it! We were into good bucks within 5 minutes from camp and I was ready to shoot one of them. Jared said I could shoot if I wanted, but if I liked what I was seeing, I was going to love the bucks they had in mind for me.Over the next few days, I laid eyes on more good Whitetail bucks than I ever imagined possible to see in one trip. I took a beautiful, heavy beamed 149+" buck that exceeded my best hopes. We also saw several great Mule deer bucks and I would love to return and have a go at one of them. I definetely had a wonderful successful hunt, but more importantly, I feel as though I gained a couple of new hunting buddies--friends for life. I was there over the Thanksgiving holiday and Jared took me into his home for dinner with his family and made me feel like I belonged there. That was very special and I won't be forgetting it! The Winchester Whitetail Revolution cameras recorded my hunt and you can see it on the Versus channel this next fall, but you shouldn't wait for that. You will find out why the Realtree crew has been returning to Milk River for the last 13 years in a row, and these are guys who can go anywhere on the planet. To some it up, Jared and his crew are good Christian men who are both friendly and extremely skilled at their trade and it is obvious that they really understand how to manage their properties for quality bucks. Look no further, you won't be disapointed and you could just possibly experience the hunt of your life. Feel free to call me if you like.

This was my fourth guided hunt in either WY of MT and by far the best. The hunt was great and I killed my best mule deer to date but that is only part of what made the experience so enjoyable. The quality of the people was remarkable. Eric and his staff were very friendly and went out of their way to get to know each of the hunters in camp and that we were all having a good time. Which was not a problem given the amount of joking around and storytelling that went on both over meals and around the fire in the evening. It was our first time with Milk River Outfitters but most of the others had hunted there before, some several times. It felt like being in camp back in PA with lifelong friends rather than 2,500 miles away from home with 20 strangers.I was hunting with a friend who was whitetail hunting. He killed his best whitetail ever on the first night in camp and I filled my mule deer tag the next morning, a 5X4 with eye guards, a very nice 11-point to all my friends back home in PA. We hiked a few miles on the first day of the hunt and saw several bucks. The hiking was not particularly difficult, mostly pretty flat though we did hike up a few draws. I was prepared for another full day of hiking but we found a group of three bucks together before 8am the second day, two were shooters, and I was spared another day of hiking! All in all this was a tremendous experience, exactly what I hoped a western hunt would be like. We booked immediately for 2010.

I have made three hunts with MRO over the last three years for whitetails(one archery and two rifle hunts). I cannot say enough about Eric and his staff. I consider my relationship with the them more of a friendship than an outfitter/client transaction. This is especially rare in the outfitting industry of today. Eric, Robyn, Darren, Scottie, and the entire MRO crew truly take pride in what they do and it shows. My November 2009 hunt couldn't come fast enough. I arrived in camp and, within an hour, Eric had me looking at dozens of deer. I observed some really nice bucks that first afternoon. My hunt, seriously, could have ended within an hour of arrival! However, after a long drive from Alabama, I wanted to see more of the picturesque Montana landscape. The following morning hunt really cannot be described with words. You just can't describe a Montana sunrise without being there. I saw well over 50 deer that morning and videoed at some great bucks including a really nice 10 point. I literally saw deer from the minute I sat down until the minute I was picked up.My second afternoon transpired in much the same fashion. Within an hour I had already passed on several bucks that most hunters would gladly take. (I have to mention I am not a hunter who has to take a deer that 'scores' well. I am looking for a mature deer that evokes the hunter in me; I know it when I see him.) As the afternoon progressed, such a buck emerged from the cottonwoods along the river. He was a heavy horned, mature buck with bladed brow tines and split G-2's. I gladly put my tag on him; what a hunt!In the days that followed, I took an antlerless mule deer and made a couple of pheasant hunts. If you are looking for a quality outfitter who cares about his customers, then look no further. MRO is truly one of a kind. I have been blessed to be able to hunt with various outfitters in various states and provinces over the course of my life. Fortunately, I have taken some really nice 'trophies' as well. However, none compare to my experiences and the fellowship among friends I share at MRO each fall. Now, November 2010 can't get here fast enough.God Bless,Brian

My hunting partner and I scheduled a whitetail hunt with Tracy Weyer (owner) for Oct. 2009. However, Tracy and I got our signals crossed and we each wrote down different dates. However, Tracy found us another date and we headed out to Montana. We arrived the evening before the hunt and met the guides Bubba and Chad and a couple of the hunters. Everyone was very friendly and relaxed. It turned out to be a very good group of guys. I hunted with Tracy the next morning and during our ride he gave me the opportunity to switch my hunt from whitetail to mule deer. With Tracy's guidance I chose to switch...it turned out to be a great decision as we got to stalk a good mulie rather than just sit in a blind. I tagged out on the first morning's hunt and Tracy videod the hunt. I tagged along with my hunting partner on his whitetail hunt the next morning and evening. He tagged out the next evening taking a very good 145 whitetail that weighed around 190 lbs. I found Tracy and his guides to be honest, fun loving, hard working guys who strive to give their clients a good hunt. We both tagged out on the first day. Had we had buck tags, we coud have easily filled those as well. Our guide was Terry, Tracey's brother. He did an excellent job of locating the antelope, and getting us in close enough for the shots. The tent camp was well set up and comfortable and Tracey's cooking was outstanding. A father/son team was also in camp and they filled one of their two buck antelope tags the first day. The son got sick though and they had to leave before filling the other tag.

I have hunted in the past with a rifle but for the last several years my passion has been archery. Tim, the outfitter that I booked this hunt with was a guide for me 15 years ago in Montana on an Antelope hunt where I got a record book trophy. After receiving several brochures from Tim and viewing his website, I contacted him. I explained exactly what I was interested in. A combination Elk, Mule Deer and possibly Antelope hunt. Expense was not really an issue but time is starting to be since by the time of the hunt I would be almost 67. Tim assured me that what I read on the website and brochure is exactly what he had to offer. I wanted to hunt from a tree stand if possible definitely on river bottom land for the Elk. Elk was primary and I would be very content to only harvest a good Elk. I already have B&C Mule Deer and White Tails but of the 7 Elk I have gotten, none were super. With all this discussed, I told Tim I would be driving out to Montana from Pennsylvania with a freezer and generator in the back of my truck. I sent Tim the required $1,000.00 deposit and applied for my tags which I got. 30 days prior to the hunt, I sent Tim my balance in full as he requested. I practiced with my bow for weeks as I always do before a hunt. I continued my daily walking and jogging to keep in shape. The ride out to Montana was great. In the last few hours I deliberately took smaller back roads and saw a tremendous number of Elk, Deer and Antelope. At some points, I was afraid I might fill out my tags in my truck. I was really pumped for the hunt. I arrived at the lodge which was great and exactly what I had expected. I was the only hunter, there was no one else there. After greetings, Tim and I discussed the hunt at which time I again stressed my desire for a good Elk and told Tim anything else would be a bonus. We were to be up at 4 AM the next day to start. Off we went in Tim's 99 pick up. Immediately I noticed a noise from the front end. The front drive shaft sounded like it was about to go but I was assured it would be fine. Most of our 1 1/2- 2 hour drive each way was in 4 wheel drive. The noise got louder. After walking the entire day in an area that had not seen any water for weeks, I got concerned. This was not river bottom but low (4500 ft) mountainous area. We saw one small antelope all day. The next day started the same way but the front end noise was even louder. Concerned about a breakdown we headed back to get Tim's back up truck. An 86 Suburban in which some of the windows did not work. Not good in 12 degree weather when a window does not go up on a 2 hour drive. We did see a couple of Mule Deer which we spent the day following. On the ride home that night a few miles from camp a monster bull Elk crossed the road ahead of us. I asked Tim if we were in an area we could hunt and he said no. This was land near the river. The next day Tim said we would hunt over a water hole out of a tree stand. We ended up next to a little pool of water sitting in a double tree stand strapped to a power line pole. We were completely exposed and sat so close that drawing my bow back would have been almost impossible. We saw nothing. On the way back, I questioned Tim about the guarantee of hunting river bottom as I requested. He said that he had not leased any this year due to the economy. I reminded him that I had called him just prior to sending my balance and again one week before I left on my trip and had confirmed with him that the property was all taken care of and would be as described in his brochure and website. Had I known at that point, I would have put the hunt off for another year. Obviously I was deliberatly lied to in order to get my money. Not wanting to start an argument while on my 10 day hunt, I tried for two more days. The third day we went to a "great water hole" where the tripod stand had been blown over by the wind. There were a cow tracks (cow as in the farmer's cows not Elk cow)at the hole but the water was so shallow a rat couldn't drown in it. Realizing this hunt was a scam I finally packed my things and left. While loading my truck, Tim said that I might be able to get permission to hunt on someone else's lease if I would wait a few more days. My experience so far on this hunt led me to believe this was just another lie and left.I learned a valuable lesson on this hunt. I will never give an outfitter the balance due on a huntagain prior to at least arriving in camp. I have, on several of my hunts paid by personal check after the hunt was over. I really try to hunt with outfitters that I have previously hunted with. I have been on many hunts where I have not gotten game but never one like this time where the outfitter obviously deceived me just to get my money. My suggestion to those of you that are relatively new at hunting is to to check as many references as possible. Negotiate with the outfitter as to how you will be paying him. I hunted Brown Bear in Alaska once by sending the outfitter half as a deposit and bringing a certified check with me for the balance to be handed over after I had a reasonable opportunity to harvest my game. A reputable outfitter should be willing to be paid in a reasonable way, not insist on all the money up front as I did for this hunt.I have filed a legal document against this outfitter and will wait to see who the Judge thinks is in the right. Hopefully I will get some of my $10,000.00 plus in expenses back but there goes another year of my hunting career and a two week vacation I looked forward to, not to mention all the aggravation that I had.Good hunting to you all.Allan
Outfitter Review: Gardner Ranch Outfitters - Montana
Outfitter / Owner: Doug Gardner
Hunter: Jason Thornton
Animals Hunted: Whitetail / Mule Deer / Antelope
Doug Gardner was previously part owner of Powder River Outfitters but now operates independently. Upon separation from Powder, the two outfitters basically split the leases 50/50 between them. They both operate out of Broadus, Montana on opposite sides of the Powder River. I rifle hunted with Powder River in 2007 and had a great hunt. I rifle hunted with Gardner Ranch in 2009 and also had a great hunt. Me and my buddy focused on whitetails and saw hundreds of deer. You see numerous bucks in the 110" to 120" range but you have to look a bit harder for deer over 130". We ended up tagging a 127" 8 point and 132" 10 point by the second day of the hunt. With some patience, you have a good chance at a 130" - 150" buck and a deer pushing B&C minimums is a possibility, but not common. The whitetails don't stand around like muleys so you need to learn to judge rack size quickly or you'll end up shooting one that's smaller than you'd like. Mule deer are also all over the place and are the focus of the majority of the hunters in camp. Accomodations are rustic, but adequate and the food and guides are excellent. You're paying for the tremendous amount of quality land that these guys have exclusive access to. I'll be going back.

Animals Hunted: Pronghorn
General comments: The area around Broadus was suffering from some pronghorn winter kill and the weather through out the summer had been wet. However, there were plenty of good bucks. Temperatures were mild and it rained every day but one. Not good for a water hole hunt. Spot and stalk was the right method to use in this weather, but the guide and outfitter didn't seem interested in employing it for anything other than a few hours one afternoon. After some significant discussions with the guide we fit in about three stalks before heading to the blinds in the late afternoon. At one point the guide encouraged me to jump out of the truck and shoot a pronghorn - one of my absolute pet-peeves. The guide didn't believe wind-direction was of concern. There weren't enough blinds in our guide's area of responsibility to hunt the wind properly. The blinds had no peep holes to look out of except the saw kerf around the windows. We left the morning of the fifth day amidst further rain storms. There was some confusion regarding a $50 difference between the Close Encounters contract amount and Powder River's contract amount. I'm still confused on that issue. Bottom line is I relied on the booking agent (who hunted with us) and failed to talk to the outfitter before and during the hunt to clear up problems that could have made the hunt successful. The weather did us no favors. I honestly have no doubt that had the weather been hot and dry shooting opportunity would have been close to 100%.You can find a more detailed, three part story of this trip at my personal blog, dvd's Mostly Archery (http://skinnymoose.com/mostlyarchery/2009/09/15/pronghorn-rained-out/).

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer
We were on the early season back country hunt. When we arrived at camp the night before the hunt, Ralph could not be contacted. Eight of us slept on concrete floor, no beds. In five days of hunting only one person saw any Elk or Mule Deer. I saw 4 squirrels, one Pine Martin and some Grouse. We rode the horses up the mountain each morning and then walked to our "spot". We sat all day at the same "spot". We glassed and the "guide" bugle called about every hour. We usually quit around 2 in the afternoon so we could walk the horses down the mountain before dark. This was nothing more than a $5000 trail ride. Four of us rode out a day and 1/2 early because we had not seen any game or even any sign. We went to Yellowstone so we could see what an Elk looks like. The guides were very personable but not very skilled. The food was very good. Even though our tent zipper only closed half way the camp equipment was adequate. The scenery was spectacular but if you want to harvest an Elk or Mule Deer, GO SOME WHERE ELSE!!!!!!

Hunted with these folks 9/14/09 thru 9/20/09 had a great time. Probably the cleanist and most comfortable place I have ever stayed at on a hunt and the food was incredible. Passed on about a 280 bull my first day and were in elk every day but one. My partner was on a huge bull for two days but could not seal the deal. For a great hunt with some of the finest people I have ever hunted with give them a try, great location plenty of big bulls you won't be sorry.

We had extremely tough weather August 2009. Looking for warm and dry and it was pretty cool with rain fall for the month 1.93" and the avg is .90". We finally had one warm day and I was able to tag a nice P&Y buck that grossed 76 3/8. Bud and Taylor did a great job getting us on the goats in some pretty tough conditions. My group of 3 we were able to get 2 nice bucks. Sandy did a nice job cooking us meals when we came home at night. If you have questions feel free to contact me at ra1tk2@sbcglobal.net I'll be back in 2010.

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer
My 2008 trip was my 3rd time with Travis. We hunted the last week of November for Elk and Mule deer from his "ranch hunt." We saw large numbers of animals both elk and mule deer. Saw a few whitetails too. Saw a few 150 class mulies. Saw some huge bulls but they were too far away. Safety is important to me and Travis runs a safe camp. I've take a 5X5 elk, 3X3 mulie and 4X4 mulie. I recommend Ford Creek. Hunting does occur on public land so you may see other hunters during the ranch hunts. You won't see another hunter in the Bob Marshall.

Total fraud. Randy has very little quality elk hunting ground if any. We hunted 1 square mile of public ground loaded with cattle. Guide just stuck you in a blind and left you there with no game around. one day we finally went to a different piece of property and all that was there were cattle. The guide left us setting around a pond watching cattle while he took a walk and he ended up getting lost. What a joke.

Animals Hunted: Elk/Deer
Fellow Hunters,I hunted at Ford Creek last October. When I met Travis Barker at a sportsman show the previous February he told me his ranch was private property and I would be staying in a beautiful private cabin with a queen bed as well as seeing elk and deer 'on his ranch' that were plentiful and of record book quality. Ford Creek and Travis Barker are not as advertised. Travis' ranch is approx 5 acres and all the hunting is done on public national forest land. And yes, you will see plenty of other hunters. My accomodations were in a shack and my bed was an old army cot that didn't even have a pad. Good thing I had an emergency sleeping bag in my rig or I would have been pretty cold at night. My guide was brand new and had NEVER been in the area before. He had no idea where the game was or any type of a plan at all. I did however manage to get a decent buck (no thanks to Travis or my guide) only to have the meat thrown on the dirty shop floor that was covered with dirt, oil and horse manure. It seemed to me that Travis and the guides were more concerned about getting drunk than taking care of the clients wants or needs. The week I was at Ford Creek there were 13 hunters in camp and only two aniamals were killed. Most of the hunters did not even see an elk or deer let alone a shooter. False advertising of this place should be illegal. If you are considering booking with this sorry excuse of an outfitter please feel free to email me. Bob

I have hunted not only once but twice with Ralph Johnson I have taken 2 320+ Bulls with Ralph, my father has taken 1 320+ bull. If you are a city slicker with no outdoor hunting experience at all then this hunt is probably not for you. You have to have a little experience on a horse and have some knowledge of hunting if you are to get your elk. If you expect to have a 100% kill go to a High fenced elk farm to get your elk. Other people who have posted negatively on this site have told some lies. I know for a fact he has a meat pole to hang your meat. And yes in the past we also used the front of the old pack house to hang meat because the meat pole was FULL. As far as shooting to close to dark the game wardens in that area are VERY strict as to when shooting starts and stops, there are usually 2-3 up there and they follow the times precisely. The ticket is not cheap. I will be hunting again this year and next with Ralph. I hope this post will help you decision process to give a more fair picture of this outfitter service. I would recommend using Ralph if you want a good hunting picture.

The hunt was exactly what the outfitter told me it was. I am partially disabled and the outfitter provided what I needed. The food was good, served homestyle. The accomodations were very comfortable. The staff worked very hard to provide a fun hunt. This is not a fancy hunt, but it is a very good hunt and I'm going back.I was looking for a real good mule deer on this hunt. I ended up taking a mature 4x4 that was 22+" wide with unique curled tips. It wasn't the buck I was looking for, but a very good buck. I passed up 3-4 better bucks hoping to find a really good one. Maybe next time. This was a 2 buck/2 state hunt. See my Wyoming review for the other half of this report.

My dad and I went on the Scapegoat Wilderness Hunt. We packed in on horses 10 miles to a remote location and never saw any hunters around us. We had an absolutely great time and I shot a really nice 4x4 and my dad got a great 4x5 Mule Deer. I can't really speak to the quality of elk as we made it clear to our guide who was Travis Barker that we wanted to concentrate on Mule Deer. The entire trip was something I'll remember forever and we had a great time. Everyone on the trip got at least 1 animal. In all we got 3 mule deer and 1 elk. The horses and mules that were used were the best. The other 2 guides in camp were very nice and the entire camp was easy to get along with. My dad and I would recommend this to anyone who is willing to get out and work. It is a hard hunt and you do have to do a lot of walking and stalking in addition to riding horses. In addition to deer & elk we also saw moose, sheep, mountain goats and a cougar. Travis provided everyone with a great trip and from start to finish did a great job.
Outfitter Review: Bullseye Outfitting - MT
Outfitter / Owner: Jeff Smith / Ben Mummert
Hunter: Brian Mcilnay
Animals Hunted: Elk
Jeff and Ben seemed like nice people. Accomodations were OK for a just out of town hunting camp. First of all, we were not physically prepared. That I am sure had an impact on the quality of our hunt. The outfitter may have tried to customize our hunt based on our physical ability. However, being an experienced elk hunter with 8 bulls from my bow, self guided, I don't think that is entirely the case. I think they saw us coming from a mile away. A 64 year old hunter with his 40 year old son just wanting a Montana experience. It was the last week of Archery, they were tired and just wanted a lazy week before the hustle and bustle of the rifle hunts.Hunting consisted of waking at 4am every morning of a 4:30 breakfast followed by over an hour drive to wherever they were taking us for the day. The hunts lasted until around 2 pm or so. That included their nap as you "sat and listened" It felt like they were obligated to keep you out "in the field" until early afternoon so that you did not feel jipped on time.Ben got us semi lost a few times, we could not find the trail and had to make our own through some of the nastiest terrain I have ever had to crawl down. That made for an interesting and painful day.Jeff was out with my Dad one day, scouting for an upcoming Ram hunt that he had a customer (either a family memeber or a friend of the family) He was busy glassing the rocks for Rams instead of trying to figure out a way to get an elk in front of my Dad.On our best day, Ben and I were onto an elk. We got to within two to three hundred yards. I was set up on a steep side hill. I wanted to move up to a flat spot ten yards up the hill. He waived for me to hold tight. He then started rustling around behind me so I turned to look. He was taking off his back pack. I thought he was going in for the fold out decoy. A minute or two later, I turned to see what he was doing. He was sitting on his A** eating a f****** sandwitch. As I am standing there, uncomfortable as hell on a sidehill on which he told me to stand tight... I gracefully took my arrow off of my string and put it back into my quiver. When he finished his sandwitch, after the elk had moved way ahead of us (I have no idea if we would have been able to keep up with this bull) Ben came up to me and suggested climbing a little higher. That was the end of my hunt. I told him that I was done, I had no desire to climb any more. I have never left a bugling bull on a hill like that before but I had no desire to spend any more time with that outfitter. And, when I got back to camp that day, before I even had time to speak, my Dad said it first. He said "I am done, I do not want to hunt with these yahoos any more". With that, we cut our hunt short by one day. I have much more to the story if you would like to hear. From an experienced archery elk hunter, I would not ever recommend this outfitter. Feel free to email or call me.

My friend and I took our wives along on the week-long hunting trip. The wives took several days to go sight-seeing: Glacier National Park, Bison Range, shopping, etc. My friend took a perfect 6 x 6 elk on the second day. I took a 5 x 4 muley on the last day. I saw game every day but one. The scenery was majestic and breath-taking. The price was right. The guides were knowledgable and hard-working. I would highly recommend this hunt.

They were never satisfied with what we saw and always said they will find better, which they did. We had to see at least 200 animals each day.Best outfitter I have had in 15 guided hunts. All 5 of us will return and I highly recommend this outfitter.

This was my first experience at booking and going on a guided hunt. We picked this outfitter for two reasons from the outset, one being the location of were I wanted to hunt and two was their personality when we talked to Karen at the sportsmen show in Harrisburg, PA. We could not have been more right, could not ask to have picked better people to spend a week with. My friend Jeff went with me and we took our wives along as well - they had a great time sight seeing the area including Glacier National park. It was a hard hunt, which I thought I was prepared for - not even close - very mountainous area requiring allot of hiking up very steep inclines, luckily we went on horses/mules about every other day. The experience/scenery was out of this world, not to mention the amount of game we saw - 25 plus mule deer and several elk almost every day, which was amazing considering the temperatures were in the 60's every day -no snow. I shot a 6x6 elk on the second day of the hunt and Jeff shot a 5x4 mule deer on the last day. I can not leave out that Karen is also an excellent cook and their daughter - Heather - makes a great sandwich as well. Breakfast with bacon and eggs every day plus a variety of other good stuff and a great supper when we got home in the evening including some very good deserts - and I say home because that is what it was like. I would highly recommend this outfitter to anyone and myself - I cannot wait to go back!! Just going to get in better shape next time.

I just returned from my third hunt with Dwayne and Oren. On the third day I finally "settled" for a 6 x 7 muley with slightly over a 29 inch outside spread after passing on at least 25 other bucks. I was the last of nine successful deer hunters. Several others had drawn antelope tags and were also successful by day 2 of the hunt. The staff and guides were not only great in the field, but the food and accommodations were great. After the deer hunting was over, everyone enjoyed either prairie dog shooting or bird hunting. On the last day, three of us limited on pheasants within a mile or less of the camp.If you want to have a great hunting experience and enjoy even better people, this is the place to go. I'm already making arrangements for a return in 2010.

How this guy has been in businees since 1939 is beyond me. Tom Brogans representations of his Outfitting business is a complete scam. He's all about moving as many hunters as he can thru his barebone operations during the big game season. Let me share a little of my story with you....) Four guys left the first day because of the poor accomodations.) Two guys left 2 days later because of the lack of game and accomodations.)Guide to hunter ratio was around 5 guys to every one guide and even then all the guide did was drop you off on the top of a small section of mountain and tell you he'd see you at 4 p.m. at the bottom of the hill. The guides were all very nice but had WWWAAAYYYY to many hunters for the amount of ground they had access to.... I feel sorry for the guys 2 weeks from now who will be hunting the same piece of ground 40 other hunters have tramped around on before them!) Toms idea of "private" land were small sections of leased land in the middle of public hunting areas. Don't even ask how many hunters we saw opening day.) Kool aid was served with every meal and his idea of "happy hour" was luke warm bush beer in a metal bowl.) After 4 days of hunting 20 some hunters saw one bull, a few cows in the next county and no mule deer.Tom also offered hunting on his leases on the low lands but nothing of any quality was seen.I could go on and on but suffice to say, Tom Brogans Guide and Outfitting is all "smoke and mirrors". I have a suggestion... Get out of the business

He worked his a off for me. Plan on going back for deer and another goat-Karen- his wife runs the lodge food was great place was perfect- they hunted as hard as we wanted and made us feel like family- Has best deer hunting on the powder river. Hoping to stick a big mulie or whitetail next year- great goat hunt you cant go wrongstephen@ottercreekimaging.com

Never had a guide work as hard for me as Dan did. This was more like hunting with an old friend. I couldn't believe the number of animals we saw. The cabins were clean and comfortable and Karen is a great cook.
Outfitter Review: Elk Range Outfitters - Montana

Animals Hunted: Elk
It was a hunt that what could go wrong did.Example, while hunting the rancher came in and moves 500 head of cattle on the 3,000 acres we were hunting. The entire hunt was geared to drive elk and when there not there not much action.A death in the guides family kept us out of the woods for 2 days. We hunted for 1 hour in the morning and he was gone till the next night. The ranch house was under construction and drywall, bare wires everywhere, bedrooms had no closets, drawers or places to put your items so you lived out of your bags.they were also the pantry and deep freeze areas. The beds were at least 30 years old and terrible. The flies were so fierce inside that one could barely eat a meal.Furniture around the TV consisted of hard plastic lawn furniture. I was told the cows would be gone and they weren't, that he had 16,000 acres and it turned out to be 4,500 in 2 spots...3,000 on 1,500 the other. The elk on the 1,500 acre land were cows and spikes. We 4 good bulls the first day but they were either 4 miles away or on someone else's land. The hunter who chewed out the outfitter got the best spots on the drives and the only elk. Mornings were hectic w/ hunters put in one vechile then moved to another then another. No real game plan.
Outfitter Review: Jake's horses - Montana
Outfitter / Owner: Jake and Katie Grimm
Hunter: John Wright
Animals Hunted: Elk
I am quite sure I would have fended better on my own. After talking with some locals in the area post hunt trip I got the impression that this outfit is more show than go. If your going to hunt for elk in southwest Montana you would be better off to steer clear of this outfitter.
Outfitter Review: Ford Creek Outfitters - Montana
Outfitter / Owner: Travis Barker
Hunter: Russ Van Orman
Animals Hunted: Elk/Deer
This hunt was "dream hunt" for my dad and myself. Our guide was well experienced and new the country around Ford Creek. We hunted from the ranch since my dad has heart condition that prevents him from riding horses. My dad and I both saw lots of deer each day. I shot 4 by 5 mulie on the seond day of the hunt and thanksgiving morning I shot real nice 6 X 6 Bull elk (scored 301) The next day my dad shot a large Whitetail buck (4X4) with hugh tines. We saw some Elk but the weather was warm so the Elk were just starting to move out of the high country hence the good rating..I am looking forward in going back.
