Overall Impression: bad - stay away from

Twice I have used Garth Carter and his HuntinFool magazine for advice when I drew a mule deer permit in Colorado (2005) and an elk permit in unit 23 in Arizona (2005). In both instances I was referred to incompetent outfitters with inexperienced guides. (Aaron Nielson/Adventures Wild and Shane Koury - Koury Guide Service). In Colorado this resulted in wasting 5 accumulated deer preference points and in Arizona 5 accumulated elk bonus points. Last year I drew (after 10 years of applying) a unit 40 Colorado elk permit. Again, I checked with one of his recommended outfitters, Steve Biggerstaff, out of Grand Junction. Biggerstaff flat out said on the phone, "Yeah, Garth tells everybody to apply, apply, then he goes out and buys a landowner permit. Last year (2008) Garth referred one of his clients to me and while I was guiding him in unit 40 Garth was having a hard time finding an elk and he came up with a pocket full of cash and tried to hire me out from under the very client he had referred to me!" About 4 - 5 years ago I cross referenced Garth Carter's HuntinFool magazine recommendations for best mule deer units in Nevada to apply for versus the Wildlife Administrative Resources draw results/applicants web site. (That info is available for anyone to see at their HuntNevada.com web site). I looked up Garth's name to see what he applied for. Garth did not even apply in a unit which his own advice and magazine listed as one of the top five units! I suspect if other western states draw results and applicant info was available I would find similar data.In November 2009 HuntinFool magazine had to list in very fine print, as all magazines must, their ownership, address, and subscription information. Subscription information listed paid subscribers at a little over 13,000! Therefore, if one follows Garth's HuntinFool magazine advice and applies in his recommended units, from a purely statistical or mathematical standpoint one is going to have a much lower chance of drawing a permit since his application service and the majority of his readers follow his advice like a bunch of lemmings going over a cliff!!!
