Mule Deer
Big mule deer in the southwest are getting harder to find every year. In Arizona, there's only a couple of areas that still produce big bucks. Each year, Arizona Wildlife Outfitters sends a recommendation list to all our clients on where to apply for big, trophy animals. If you would like to be on that list to find out where the big bucks are, give us a call, FAX or send us a request via e-mail. | |
| Photo #1: Dean Graham of Phoenix passed on a lot of bucks before he bagged this great 4 X 4 on the ninth day of the hunt on the Kaibab. Dean was hunting with AWO owner Don Martin at the time he bagged this buck, and is largest mule deer he has ever taken. |

| Desert Bighorn Sheep | |
Photo #1: A dream hunt for a youngster through Hunt Of A Lifetime! 16-year-old Arkansas resident Christopher Reeves (behind ram with folded ball cap) suffers from leukemia and had just 1-½ days to hunt sheep in Arizona. Reeves got the tag when a long time Arizona sportsman, Norm Pint, was fatally injured in an automobile accident in October. With the help of the Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, some great folks from Kingman and Las Vegas, Nevada, Pat Feldt, plus the AWO team of Don Martin, Larry Sallee, Dan Reed, and Kevin Rodgers, Reeves got this ram on the first day he was here. Bill Luffy of the ADBSS located the ram and AWO head guide Larry Sallee took Christopher in on the stalk. Reeves made a perfect 200 yard shot and bagged the ram, which was the second largest taken in Region III in 2005. This story has appeared in several regional outdoor magazines. |
| Photo #2: Steve Weekley, a police officer for the city of Phoenix decided to use AWO’s head guide Larry Sallee to find him a ram of a lifetime in Unit 15D. Steve passed a lot pf rams before he bagged this broomed-off old warrior. |

Photo #3: Scottsdale, AZ resident Kirsten Appel had some gun issues on her hunt, and had some shots at larger rams, but when she settled down she made a fantastic shot at this 5 ½-year-old ram. Kirsten was hunting in what are arguably the toughest sheep units in the state, Units 15A-15B East. AWO owner Don Martin guided Appel. |
| Photo #4: Phoenix resident Jeff Bromley had some tough luck while trying to do it on his own during his Unit 15D sheep hunt in 2005. When Jeff learned that AWO head guide Larry Sallee and AWO’s Kevin Rodgers was available, he called and in one day bagged this old ram. |

Javelina & Turkey Hunts
Photo #1: Henderson Nevada resident Bill Rafti bagged this javelina at 20 yards while using his new S&W .50 caliber handgun. Rafti, who has taken a number of pigs while hunting with AWO, plans to use a bow for his 2007 hunt. Rafti was hunting with AWO owner Don Martin when he bagged this pig. |

| Photo #2: Michigan resident Dave Lucas shows the pig he arrowed with his longbow while on an archery hunt with AWO guide Dan Reed. This is Dave’s second pig with a longbow. |

Arizona will offer some great and unique hunting opportunities from January through April 2006 for hunters who seek javelina and spring turkey adventures. Archery pig hunts are open for the entire month of January, while muzzleloader, handgun and rifle hunters can hunt pigs during a week long season in February. All tags are issued through a draw. Javelina tags are just $75 and the non-resident hunting license is still only $113.50
You must apply for javelina/spring turkey tags in Sept-Oct. 2005 and the good news is that the hunting license needed (2006) for this application is good for your other big game applications for the fall hunts in 2006. Hunters who want to pursue the wily Merriam's gobblers can do so in April-May. These tags are also issued only through a draw. Tags are just $55.50 and a hunting license ($113.50) is needed. Again this license can be used to apply for other big game tags in the fall, 2006 draw. AWO offers custom four-day fully guided and outfitted one-on-one javelina or turkey hunts for just $1,100. Apply for these tags with a friend and the same custom four-day hunt is just $1,800 or $900 each for a 2 X 1 hunt. In the past our hunters have had 100% shooting opportunities at javelina, regardless of the method of take. These tags are easy to draw and we will advise you on what units to apply for. We are located just 100 miles from Las Vegas, Nev., and can arrange for pickup and take back to McCarran International airport for an additional $200 (one or two persons). Many of our javelina/turkey hunters bring their spouses out to Las Vegas for a mini-vacation while we are out on our hunts. We will also offer small game (quail and coyote) hunts in January and February for $250 per day, one or two hunters.. We are also licensed fishing guides. We conduct spring trips on Lake Mead and Alamo Lake for largemouth, and in the spring/summer, we offer night time striped bass/catfish trips based out of our newly remodeled fishing camp in Meadview. Trips are just $250, for one or two anglers. If you like to "hunt" with a video or 35 mm camera, we can assist you on your quest. Call us for details on these special "hunts" |

Special Services
As you can tell by the photos, hunting any big game in Arizona is very good. Hunters who use the veteran staff at Arizona Wildlife Outfitters increase the odds that they will be part of a true hunt of a lifetime, no matter what species they pursue. Almost all big game tags, except archery deer, turkey and mountain lion are issued from the Arizona Game & Fish Dept. through a draw system. With the ever increasing demand for tags- especially premium elk, deer and sheep tags, it is important that hunters understand how the draw game is done in Arizona. I can and do help our clients and others in making choices on where to apply. This is a free service. All you need do is write to me at awoguide@ctaz.com and I’ll send you my hunt recommendations and price list. Hunts are booked on a first come-first served basis, so if you draw a tag, don’t wait too long to call. AWO isn’t the largest outfitter in the state, but when it comes to quality and satisfaction, I believe we are at the top. I don’t hire just anyone to do hunts for me. My philosophy has been since day one (1987) to get a small and dedicated group of veteran guides pay them well, and keep them busy. This is why you’ll see the same guides names year after year in our successful hunter section. Arizona offers some special and unique hunting opportunities from January through March for hunters who seek the second most sought after big game in Arizona, the javelina, which are commonly called the “Grey Ghosts of the Desert.” Archery pig hunts are open the entire month of January, while HAM (Handgun, Archery, Muzzleloader) hunts are during the third week of February. General rifle hunts are open the last week of February. Javelina tags must be applied for in September-October, and starting in 2007, will cost $105.00. A hunting license must also be purchased ($151.25) at the time of application, however this license can be used to apply for all of the fall 2007 Arizona big game tags. Fully guided and outfitted 4-day javelina hunts are $1,100 for a one-on-one hunt. Apply with a friend and we’ll do a two-on-one fully guided and outfitted hunt for just $1,800. We have had almost 100% shooting opportunities the last three years, regardless of method of take. For those interested hunting Merriam’s turkeys, Arizona offers limited spring hunting for gobblers. Tags must be applied for in September-October and require that you also purchase an Arizona hunting license. Tags are $77.75. Prices for our turkey hunts are the same as our javelina. We also do varmint hunts, and we specialize in calling coyotes, though occasionally bobcats and gray foxes, and badgers are seen. The prices for our varmint hunts are $350 per day, one or two persons. We’ll meet you in the field before daylight, and head to areas we believe you’ll have the best chances to bag a coyote. We use both mouth and electronic calls. We also offer other small game hunts, including dove and quail for $350, one or two hunters. If you like to photograph wildlife, AWO is the service to use. We will take out professional photographers on daytime tours to photograph any of Arizona’s big game species. Whether you’re after a desert bighorn sheep or a bugling elk, we can find them and get you close. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 928-681-4867 or e-mail me and we can talk about planning your Arizona outdoor adventure. Good luck and good hunting!
