Outfitter Review: Trophy Outfitters - Eagar AZ

Outfitter / Owner: Van Hale

Hunter: Daniel Firth

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

Van Hale, Owner of Trophy Outfitters, was drunk three nights. Accommodations were terrible. In a tent. Temperature was 18 degrees with high wind conditions and the heater only worked occasionally. Guide and outfitter stayed in a camper and didn't seem to care about my conditions. Expected a hunt, but all we did was drive around in an ATV. I have never road hunted in my life and didn't expect that. No one had scouted prior to the hunt. I waited 12 years for this hunt and used up all of my preference points in Unit 1 in Arizona. I am 72 and will never get a chance at this hunt again. I saw deer, but they were all substandard, not what I expected from that unit. I am diabetic and had requested meals high protein and low carbs. This was not made available. I always enjoyed camp food on my other hunts, but this food was terrible. The only way I could get a drink was wait until the liquid thawed in the ATV.

First off ive went with several different outfitters in my time.. i have never been treated like Mick Chapel treated myself and buddy. First off the day we arrive no one is around 3 hours later he shows up with his wife in the truck and he is screaming at her he jumps out of the truck and says you boys put hyour stuff in there pointing at a run down shack. I am not a boy havent been for 50 years. Well it only got worse it seemed as if we were a real pain in his ass he didnt know where to hunt. Our first day like all 5 started early we drove in a small toyota truck for 3 hoursvone way he ran the heat so hot we sweated our ass off.His idea of hunting was to walk till you kicked one up then take a running shot. Right off the bat he takes off with me and my buddy hes walking at a fast pace well we were soon out of breath he didnt care hemade fun of us. My buddy seen a mule deer i didnt . There were other hunters camped right were we hunted we seenother trucks too not impressed.the next 4 days were stupid same area then the culmination was him telling me too hike down this canyon and meet him back in a couple of hours he explains this and then starts yelling at me do you understand like i was some stupid kid. This man is the most disrespectfull guide ihave ever encountered and he gets top money for his hunts biggest rip off i have ever been involved in.

Outfitter Review: Arizona Guided Hunts - Vail AZ

Outfitter / Owner: Pat Feldt

Hunter: Paul Stikeleather

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

Great Hunt. I booked this hunt with Pat Feldt of Arizona Guided Hunts because I was looking for a spot and stalk fall black bear hunt. There were three hunters in camp and two of the three, including myself, bagged our bears on the first morning out. The third hunter bagged his bear the next day. I shot my bear at 310 yards, so be prepared for long shots. My bear was an old sow that weighed about 250 lbs with a jet black coat. No rubs. I have been on several guided hunts prior to this one and I can say that Pat is a very knowledgable and professional outfitter. His guides are also knowledgeable and hard working. His equipment is well maintained. Pat and his guides had done the pre-season scouting so they knew what the bears were feeding on and where they would most likely be. I would definately recommend booking a hunt with Pat and I will most likely book again with him in the future.

Outfitter Review: AZ Diamond Outfitters - Cortaro AZ

Outfitter / Owner: Dan Adler

Hunter: George Smith

Animals Hunted: Elk

Very disappointed with what was promised and what was delivered by Dan Adler (AZ Diamond Outfitters) during 2009 Elk Hunt. We had a group of 5 hunters - 1 on 1. Only 1 guide had good local knowledge of the area. A couple of the guides had never even been to the area before (one guide came down from Alaska to help guide). We were promised guides with good local knowledge. Dan Adler, owner of AZ Diamond Outfitters, never even showed up for the hunt (supposedly off hunting with his non-paying father-in-law) and never followed up after the hunt to see how things went - I think he knew it wasn't good. Camp was set up in an area where a forest road ran right through the middle of it. Most positive part of the hunt was that we did have a good cook. Would not recommend. Guess Adler wasn't really worried about it since it is so hard to draw in Arizona he would never see us again. I was the only one to kill an elk but it was pure pot luck. Feel free to call with any questions.George Smith 304 965 5565 West Virginia

Had a great time, saw bucks everyday in the 160-190 P&Y range, awesome desert mule deer area. Jody and his crew run a great, comfortable camp. The food is awesome, the company was great. I had opportunities but circumstances intervened to keep me from an animal. Highly recommend Bucks N Bulls outfitters and Jody Tapia.

Outfitter / Owner: Scot Kirkpatrick

Hunter: Tim Herbst

Animals Hunted: Elk

My brother and I had December cow tags in an area similar to the one where Scot usually works and he was willing to guide us. With very little time to scout he was able to put us onto about the only herd in the area where I hear nearly everybody else got skunked. That didn't keep my brother from missing his best shot opportunity and then ending the hunt early for a business trip. Meanwhile, while separated from them I had made a perfect 40-yard shot on what turned out to be a spike! Painful to admit that but, yes, I did it.So there were problems with the hunt, but nothing that could be laid on Scot.

I booked a hunt with Lance for my 2007 late season rifle elk hunt in Az. I provided my own camp but the hunting was great and I came away with a really nice bull on the second morning. This is a great archery hunt for Deer and Javalina. The javalina are fairly easy to stalk and good shot oppertunity. Mule deer are glassed from hill tops and the stalked. Good hunters would have 100 % shot oppertunity. Taking them just depends on how good you are. Good glass is a must here.

I did a combo bow hunt with outfitter Tom Klumker and guide Jerry Jump for Mt lion, Javelina and Coues whitetail deer in January 07. Spent a good portion of the hunt looking for a good lion which we got on the last day. Took a nice Javelina as well. Saw lots of nice coues bucks but because I was mainly after a MT. lion didn't spend much time trying for one. Great hard working outfitter and guide. Excellent trip even if I hadn't taken an animal.

Outfitter / Owner: Van Hale

Hunter: Sig Hall III

Animals Hunted: Elk

Van Hale did not provide the type of AZ elk hunt he told me he was expert in providing and would provide me. He told me to find the bulls he had to pack us in deep on horseback away from the crowded and over hunted road areas. We had many conversations confirming how the hunt and camp would be provided. Instead of a pack-in spike-camp hunt he put us up in a nice lodge and we hunted out of the guide's pick up truck for 5 days, near the roads and along with other hunters. The day we were to pack in, Van told me we would stay at the lodge for one day, two at the most, then we would be packed in to the spike camp. Van then left for Kansas and I never saw him again. He has not returned my calls, emails or letters since December of 2006.

Josh Epperson is guide/outfitter extreme in my book.Everything from where to apply and what to expect was right on. Our tent camp was on public land right in a lot of elk. Bull's kept waking us at night with their scream'n! We got into elk everyday out and I finally arrowed a 374" 7x7 on day four. Josh never lost patience or enthusiasm even when I screwed up on bulls he got me in bow range of. This is a physical hunt so be prepared to hunt hard. Keith Hubbard’s thorough preseason scouting got us into elk right away on a very difficult late November hunt. Over the course of a five-day hunt Keith’s focus and dedication helped put me in front of four legal bulls. His attention to every detail allowed us to still hunt within 70 yards of this mature bull for a quick and humane kill. USO helped us submit for a area 10 Trophy area and helped us with all trip set up. Weather was the limiting factor as we got more rain in two weeks than they have had in the last 10 years. Roads turned to gumbo and prevented us from getting to where the elk were. Turned a younger 6 by 6 down early in the hunt but never got another opportunity. Guides were great and busted their hump trying to get us on elk. Saw limited number of elk but again we could not get back to the interior and forced to hunt the edge were all the pressure was. Relentless...Thats Keith. I Drew a 2003 Kiabab early winter tag. Not the best time but still great area. I really struggled. I was inexperienced and just fell apart on two monsters Keith put me on. He encouraged me to pass on a couple smaller animals and I ended up taking a beautiful 3x3 with a drop-tine on the left side. The hunt itself was every bit of what I had imagined it would be and then some. It got hard for me because I really screwed up a couple of times but Keith never let me get discouraged. I met Keith the day he picked me up for the hunt and I felt like I was hunting with a friend. He didnt quit when I was ready to. This is what I and anyone should expect when you hire an outfitter. Once again, Keith impressed the heck out of me. We went out for the 2004 summer/fall bear hunt. Arizona is in the middle of an awful drought subsequently the bears were not out where they normally feed. Keith had to find them and find them he did! He glassed up a bear coming down a canyon late in the evening. He said "I know how to get in that canyon from the other side" He had me on a hill the next morning and like Keith said, the bear came out of the trees at the bottom of the canyon and up the hill to go to sleep. Keith yelled "follow me!" as we raced to the crest of the hill we were on, and he set me up for the shot. One shot from my Tika 300 and the 350# bear fell. The head and cape were so heavy that Keith carried it out for me. Of the other six hunters we knew were in that area, I was, so far to our knowledge, the only one to take a bear. This is after passing up on a smaller bear opening day! Keith is an excellent guide and outfitter but, absolute most importantly, he can HUNT! I will respond to any e-mail inquiries so feel free to do so.

Actually I'm writing for help. Me and a friend bought a trophy elk hunt off of ebay from someone calling himself Jim Black. He claims to run Western International Outdoors. He also claims a Lake Havasu City, AZ address. He has a partner named Timm Paul. The hunt was suppose to be in Utah at an exclusive lodge. This was an emergency fill in type hunt for a father and son that had been injured in a car accident. Prior to the hunt, he called and cancelled due to an alleged 4 wheeler accident on the ranch. We had wired him the money ahead of time. He offerred to "bump" us to the next year. We accepted the offer contigent upon sending us a contract and refunds for an extra mule deer and antelope hunt we had prepurchased too. It has been several weeks and we have not received anything in the mail and can not contact him. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
