Outfitter Review: Pink Mountain Outfitters,o/a Wild Rose Operations - Alder Flats AB

Outfitter / Owner: Lloyd Clark

Animals Hunted: Canada Moose

Six day hunt for about $8000US. Camp 50 feet off a public road with other hunters not 200 yards away. Limited to 2 pieces of bacon for the one day we even had it. Camp in chaos much of the time with equipment not there (coleman lanterns, boat for second lake, oars for the boat we did have, even no stern plug for the boat! Had to use guides atv's and there were only 2 for 4 hunters plus them). Outfitter promised meat refrigeration that never really happened along with a host of other assurances. Food was just OK especially after cook left in mid week. Weather was too early for rut so I don't blame outfitter for the poor hunting outcome. I do blame him for the poor camp. After sending the booking agent my review the outfitter sent me a sarcastic email suggesting my negativity was due to not killing and suggested hunting inexperience. I've been on over two dozen outfitted hunts and well know the difference between a well run operation and one that is not.

Wow, my brother and I saw a negative review on here...well...from a FARMER???? I've never hunted on this farmers land EVER. We meet many lovely people on our hunting trips. Often stopping to chat or have a coffee. My brother and I and our family have hunted for years with Terry Scott. We've taken our best mule and whitetail deer with him every single year. We'll continue to hunt with him as long as he continues to be in business. Top notch hunts and professionalism. You couldn't ask for more in an outfitter!

Terry is the most professional and skilled outfitter we have hunted with and we keep coming back for more! In 2011 I took my largest mulie yet! 226" gross! We'll never hunt for mulies anywhere else!

The outfitter Ken Stienbaur seems to anise guy however the guide Henry Giles of Shadow Creek Outfitters is another story. I have paid to hunt 8 times onY one other hunt was worse then this one. I had a wolf, mule deer, and whitetail tag. Never saw a wolf, was told by locals they are 80 miles north of here and only stray here along the river once in a great while. The guide put me alone in a blind in high grass for 2 days could only see about 50 yards saw 2 sets of ears go by. Next 2 days were wasted in a blind where another hunter had been for 2 days and saw only 2 small does. We did some driving around and I seen at least 6 bucks the story was always the same. We can't shoot here if he were across the road or in the next field we would shoot. My question was never answered. If we can't shoot here why the hell are we hunting here? Day 6 saw the biggest buck of my life, a 180 class buck, 100 yards broad side No we can't shoot here. Yet 4 hours later the guide said yes we could have shot that buck I just wasn't sure this morning. The mule deer were very scarce there only in small scattered bunches. Saw one good buck guess what Can't soot here. Again the next day guide said yes we could have shot him I just wasn't sure where the property line was. I did kill a small 3 by 2 mule deer just for meat the guide was shocked. Saying I didn't think anything was in there. My con clusion the guide did not want me or the other hunter to kill anything as he was trying to promote his own guide service. I will never hunt with either and do not recamend Alberta Native Guide Services or Shadow Creek Outfitters. The hunt and trip cost me ,a disabled veteran, over 8 thousand dollars that took a long time to save and have nothing to show for it. Go some where else.

Nothing was as described. It was obvious little if any previous scouting of the area had been done. Our guide got lost, and was trying to rely on "Google Earth" to guide him around. This same guide also fell asleep during one morning hunt. He was taking pictures with the flash on during an evening hunt of the sunset. After being told we would see 5-6 moose a day, and cull anything under 45 inches for the first half of the hunt, we saw NO animals at all. Everything was an excuse for not seeing animals. Basically, we spent the vast majority of our time riding around on 4 wheelers, stopping every couple hours to call for a few minutes, then taking off again to ride. Nothing but road hunting that they called "scouting". On a guided hunt, I'd think that the guides would at least have an idea of where the animals were, but this wasn't the case. Overall, it was a huge waste of money and time, and I regret ever booking a hunt with them. I feel even worse about it since I picked that outfitter for the hunt my brother, dad, and I decided on. My real rating would be zero stars, but that wasn't an option.

I have had the pleasure of hunting cougars with Byron Stewart and the rest of the TNT crew three times. All three times we connected with giant toms. Two have made B&C, and the third is yet to be scored. Byron's knowledge of these cats and the areas he hunts is incredible. He is a giant cat catching machine! His hounds are unbeatable, and the hunting equipment is top notch. His guides are just as knowledgable and are great company as well. I cannot recommend anyone higher if you are looking for a great cougar hunt!

Worst hunt I have ever been on. Started bad for day one and never got better. When i booked this hunt it was supposed to be a spot and stalk hunt with my bow on farm land.. Never even got my bow out of the case. Turned out to be a pickup truck hunt. Drive around for hours on end untill you see a bear then jump out and shoot. I was told we whould have multiple chances for stalks which was a load of crap. Saw three bear all week. Guides were very nice ad nfood was good but that was the extent the hunt. $4000 black bear hunt I expect top of the line. As bad as it was everyone still had a chance at a bear. After flying home we found the the guides didnt pack all the skulls with the hides ane after takeing the hides to the taxadermist he was very upset about all the cuts in the hide that needed to be repaired. This was as low as it gets.

Devin was completely unprepared for this hunt and the hunt never should have occurred. Devin arrived in Alberta from Ontario only a few days prior to our hunt and stands were erected two days prior to the hunt with absolutely no scouting. No deer were seen the first three days of the hunt. Accommodations and food were horrible and customer service was very poor. I would give Devin a D- as a final grade. The only reason an F was not given is due to the fact that Devin was on time picking us up from the airport. Needless to say, I am looking for another outfitter in Alberta!

Outfitter Review: Pokolodi Outfitting - AB

Outfitter / Owner: Robert Lindsay

Hunter: stuart scott

Animals Hunted: Ducks, Geese

The Other Pokalodi Hunting ExperienceAfter years of stories about the great shooting at Pokalodi and invitations, I decided to pull the trigger. Now for some venting and constructive criticism on what my hunting buddy considered an “on theirtoes” hunting operation that seemed very “flat footed” to me.We were split into 3 and 4 group parties. The morning of the first hunt, our guide Dave could not figureout how to get the electronic goose call working. Finally, after 15 minutes of our group working on it, itwould only work at less than half volume. All else went well on that and the afternoon shoot.Day two of the hunt, and all subsequent shoots, hunters were piled into three 2-man blinds side by side. The #7 hunter shifted around the blinds areas. I felt like I was part of a Columbian firing squad. Was it laziness or lack of experienced guides that we could not split up into manageable effectivehunting parties? Our guide Dave had nothing good to say about Bobby, the outfitter, his boss. When asked by Bobby todo a reasonable task, Dave said, “Do I look black? I’m not a nigger.” Dave had been hired on veryrecently. At the second day afternoon shoot, after setting up, Dave moved into the tree line, leaned upagainst a rock, and began to drink beer. Dave seemed like a personable guy, but his actions reflectedvery poorly on Pokalodi. When asked to do another task, he complained to Bobby in front of all of usand was fired that evening. This now left us with one guide, Troy, and Bobby. Fortunately, one of theguys in our group drove one of the trucks to our next two shoots for day 3 as the other guide, Troy, wasmeeting another group of 8 hunters, which, by the way, split into 2 groups. At the second afternoon shoot, Bobby couldn’t get the electronic goose call working and blamed theproblem on a dead battery and sent Troy running a mile for another battery. Fortunately, the birds hadnot yet begun to fly. When the new battery was hooked up, the unit still would not work. The call cameout, “any electricians?” Just as I arrived, Bobby pushed the male connector all the way in and surprise, surprise we had full volume! The morning of the third day, there were very few shells left, so Paul, the field locator, had to drive backto town to get more shells. The first two days we used #2’s for geese and ducks which is what isrecommended on the web site. I realized at the end of the third day we were using BB’s for a primarilymallard shoot. I am not a great shooter, so a few more pellets would have been nice. The morning of the last shoot was slow so having only one guide. The other, Troy, was preparing for theother party of hunters. Bobby decided to take 3 of the 7 of us to a small pond where the mallards wereflying in. At first he pointed us in the direction, and said, “Here are two mojo ducks. It’s about a halfmile and you just jump over the barbed wire fence.” After confirming directions, he decided to walk halfway with us and then left us. We finally arrived and set up quickly and shot at several mallards andnailed a few. He showed up an hour later with 2 more hunters and completely repositioned the mojosand us and the group proceeded to shoot one approaching duck and the flight was over.At the beginning of the trip, Troy and Bobby asked who would be taking birds home. I was the only one.Troy asked which birds I would like and I stated clearly and concisely, “Mallards and a few specklebellies”. I shot at least twelve mallards and two speckle bellies. Our group shot probably 80 mallardsand at least fifteen speckle bellies and lots of ross and snows. To my horror at the airport at customs, the cooler was full of ross and snows, breasted, unbagged, and barely cold. Now who would pick thosebirds over mallards and specs? If I had thought Troy would send me home with those, I would haveinspected the cooler. I paid a significant fee for this trip and I at least expected to come home withsome of the higher quality birds I shot. Why would they do that? What did they do with my birds? Ihad promised ducks for my friends and family and I love duck.We were supposed to shoot the morning of the fourth day (our final shoot #7). It was never made clearto me whether the real reason we did not shoot was either the group leader thought we would berushed to make it to the airport or the two guides had a new group of eight hunters and there was noone left to handle our group.I never complained once about anything. My friend who has shot 6 years with Bobby says great thingsabout Pokalodi. I didn’t want to rock the boat. The accommodations, food, most of the equipment,Paul’s selection of shoot sites were all fine. I think 7 hunters shooting side by side caused much flaringand hesitation from the birds. It’s easy to blame problems on bad guides, but no matter what, it reflects poorly on the operation. Ihave fished extensively on the long range fleet out of San Diego and guided salmon and halibut trips inSoutheast Alaska, and never have I experienced anything like this or provided such poor service.Nothing is perfect, shit happens. It just seems like an awfully lot of droppings fell on this trip. I washoping for a first trip to Canada that I would look back on with fond memories as a catalyst to excite meto come back. I actually got a banded honker with a Pokalodi band, the first ever for Bobby after 12years of tagging and the second one for me.I was so disappointed by the time I got home, I flicked the band into a nearby fountain. It’s too late forwishes now!I sent this letter to Bobby via email on October 8, 2009 and received the following response the nextday, “I’ll reply in depth to this email letter this weekend.” I sent another email ten days later. “Bobby,it’s been two weekends and I have not yet heard ???” Then I received a voice mail message on myphone and responded, “Bobby, what happened to the “in depth reply” that to me means via email inwriting.?”On the 20th I received the following message message, “Sorry you didn’t enjoy your time here, Stuart.Life is what you make of it. It would be best if you did not come back.” This was my finalcommunication: “Nice “detailed” reply. Now I will expand upon the letter including your lack ofpromised detailed response and you can expect the entire communication to be posted on everyhunting forum outfitter rating site in North America.”

I worked for this outfitter in Southern Colorado for not even 3 weeks before leaving. After hearing the stories from both the owner which doesnt even have a license i might add. He had his revoked for some reason. I was told by clients of all the promises he made and then told by him that he made no promises. His land has very few animals and very low grade of the animals he has. He sells these hunts because it is on "private land" A person would be much better off on public land elsewhere. He also did not pay me a dime for my services and will soon be going to court for this. He did give me a check but had it stopped after giving it to me. I might also add that i had to hunt him down for over a week to recieve this false check. He is a crook and a liar to anyone that runs into him. Paying him for a guided hunt might as well have been money thrown in the trash for a lot of walking around on land that you or his guides do not know. He does not want his guides to scout because he says it will push game off land therefore you are hunting with guides who also may be on a piece of property for the first time.

I hunted the week of 5/18 until 5/22. Camp includes canvas wall tents with cots and a wood stove. All kept me and my group very comfortable for the week. Wendy provided unbelievable meals for the week and left us all full at the end of each one. Out of 5 days hunting, I saw 8 different bears and killed 2, one of which was a nice cinnamon. Each hunter leaves camp around 4 pm and heads to the stands with their guide. The guides are all very knowledgeable and work their butts off. They bait every day and make certain you are on an active site. Everyone in my group filled all of their tags with no problem. You will not be disappointed if you hunt with the Silver Fox team.

Outfitter / Owner: Pat Frederick

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

Where to begin?...my whitetail hunt was sold to me as a "cancellation" hunt. Turned out to be simply an unsold hunt because the operation is primarily geared toward mule deer, in mainly mule deer country (one of the other guides told me that the outfitter was considering changing the whitetail hunts to simple "throw-ins" on the high-priced mulie hunts). My "guide" had just been plucked from the oil fields (once I had bought the hunt) and had a grand total of one week of experience...and it showed. He didn't know, or care, about game and hunting regs (basic things like legal shooting hours and rifle magazine capacity), and tried to talk me into having a loaded gun while driving in the truck. He even fell asleep in the blind/stand during every single sitting. Blind/stand locations did not appear to be scouted in any meaningful way and were simply located based on good visibility.Admittedly, the weather was very mild and the bucks weren't moving much, so my guide decided we should resort to the favorite local "hunting" technique and spend the bulk of each day driving around IN THE FIELDS, trying to use the truck to flush deer out of the bits of brush in the middle of the fields, for me to presumably (it never worked) jump out and blast away at a fleeing deer hell bent for next week. But the worst offense of all was when my guide and another guide used two trucks to chase a buck, at very high speed, across a field, so close on its heels that one of the trucks almost ran the buck over. In the end, a friend of the other guide shot the buck out of the front seat of a third truck (another preferred local "hunting" technique, and one that my guide proudly professed his experience at doing).

I killed a good whitetail early in the hunt and could have held out for better. Bull Moose were a little scarce but the weather was unseasonably warm and there were tons of cows around. I killed a nice 40 inch Bull after a lot of hard work by the guides. I added a mule deer tag at the end of the hunt and Scott Taylor was very honest with me about expectations given that the mule deer was added last minute. I was told 160-170 was a reasonable expectation. The second last morning of the hunt my guide stopped me from shooting an ok Mule deer, telling me we could do better. That afternoon I killed a 190 + Mulie, again after extraordinary effort by my guide. This is a first-rate operation, top to bottom. You get what you pay for and I look forward to returning. Scott Taylor runs a great operation.

This is a very professional run operation and they provide a great hunt with personal service to each hunter. I have hunted with many other outfitters in Canada and the US, this one is by far the best. You will not believe the accomodations of the lodge and food once you get to camp (Slave Lake). I am the most impressed with the honesty and hard work ethic of Troy Foster. I would recommend booking early, Troy sells out every year for all his hunts. I have been chasing whitetail for years in hot spots like North Dakota, Kansas and Saskatchewan with various degrees of success. This year I hunted Alberta with Neil and North Star hoping to finally have a chance at a 150 class WT and combo with a mule deer. On my first day Neil put me in a spot where I tagged out in 20 minutes on my biggest WT to date, a 164” 12 pointer. Two days later I bagged a big mulie. Yeah, I got lucky, but North Star gave me a chance to get lucky. Having personally experienced many different WT outfitters over the last 6 years, North Star has been the most successful and the accommodations are first rate. I will return in 09 to see if Neil can do it again.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

I have been on a lot of hunts with a lot of guides and this is one hunt that exceeded my expectations. It is truly a sportsman's paradise. The amount of large (as in 140 and above) bucks that I saw was far beyond anything I have ever experienced or even expected to experience. It is also neat to see mule deer, moose, elk, wolves and whitetails all in one place. The guides are great -- very friendly and they actually know their stuff. Food is great. The blinds are well positioned and comfortable. Absolutely a first rate hunt. Well worth skipping several little hunts and putting the money toward going here some day if you are looking for a bruiser buck.

Outfitter / Owner: Terrence Boss

Hunter: Dennis Burke

Animals Hunted: Bear

This was the worst guided hunt I've ever experienced. The day after the owner Terrance Boss took our money he left camp stating he would return the following day. Leaving us with very young cook that had never even been camping before and a guide that was drinking while the owner was away Boss never returned to camp while we were there and four days after he abandoned us we left to go home empty handed. The camp conditions were horrible and the bears never showed up. Which was the same with the hunters before us. The current advertisements regarding the 200% success rate on Boss's web site are false. My strong recommendation is to steer clear of this individual and contact local authorities regarding past activities and complaints If your looking for a good hunt find a reputable guide or outfitter there are plenty of others in Alberta to chose from.

We did another resident drop camp this year with Dan.Flew in for 14 days.Called in 7 moose on our lake and saw 3 flying. 2 bulls over 50',1 pushing 50,2 in the mid 40's and a spiker. All moose were called in to 50 yards or less.I shot the biggest bull with archery which was 55" and scored 193 gross. Will be the new #5 Pope and Young Bull for Alberta all time.Passed on all other bulls and spent 3/4 of the 14 days in the tent due to unbelievable high winds.Great hunt and we are booked again this year (5th trip ).Moose aren't around every corner but if your hard work and luck come together it can be an amazing hunt. The landcape and northern lights are simply amazing.

Outfitter / Owner: Dan Hungle

Hunter: walter paul

Animals Hunted: black bear

Saw 3 bears in a whole week of hunting, 2 of the bears were about 70 pounds and the 3rd about 180 pounds. They said they thought there was a big winter kill, funny thing is everyone at the airports on the way home that were hunting with other outfitters all seemed to see alot of bears. There were supost to be tons of bears there and not only that but book bears and color phases. Out of our group of 6 a total of 6 bears were killed, 1 about 250 and the others about 150, many were first bears and no colored bears were sighted. The baiting was cheap, popcorn, gummy candy, meat scraps, and donuts. The only thing the bears seemed to want were the donuts. The were no beavers for bait as stated. Stands were nice, guides great, decent tents, and average food, just not many bears. The hunters in camp the week before us were also highly dissapointed and experienced the same success if thats want you want to call it. My opinion is that this outfit is over hunted and to cheap on the baiting. Right next to camp is where they stored the popcorn, candy and donuts, none of it was ever bothered. If there were many bears around they could never get away with this. If this had been the place i was at in saskatchewan last year that bait would have been strung out everywhere. Save your money and dont waste your time here.

Outfitter / Owner: Ron/May McDonald

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

My buddy and I hunted with North Country Outfitting Inc in May of 2007. This was our first bear hunt. The actual trip did not start so great as we missed one leg of our flight and had to be re-routed causing us to miss one day of our hunt. Did I forget to tell you that good 'ol United lost my luggage (which did not arrive until the 3rd day of the hunt). Nevertheless, from the moment we arrived Ron and May McDonald made us feel at home and as though we were part of the family. May called the airport to check on my bags and Ron offered to let me use his gear. Our guide Darcy was a great. He was easy going, friendly, very experienced and very knowledgeable. He made sure we had a good hunt and, we did. We hunted different baited sites (all had fresh baits) and the stands were comfortable and in good condition. The camp consisted of rifle and bow hunters all of whom took good bears. There was a mix of black and color phased (brown's, cinammon, and even a blonde) bears shot. Another great aspect of this hunt is that you are allowed two tags. I was lucky enough to take a black and a big cinammon. My buddy took a great looking brown/cinammon (all three are going to make great rugs/mounts).If you want great scenery, good food and accomodations, abundant game, experienced and friendly guides and want to be treated like a member of the family then this is the outfitter to book with. I dont believe North Country has a website but their phone number is (780)623-1774.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Whitetail Connection - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Don Tyschuck

Hunter: Scott Reeves

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

This was my third hunt with Alberta Whitetail Connection. My first two hunts I had harvested a fairly nice buck but weather conditions were different. This time when me and my friend Glen arrived it was snowing and continued to snow all week. Don Tyschuck the owner and guide was poorly prepared for this weather and had no means to get us to our stands through the snow so we had to hike almost a mile in knee deep snow carring all of our equipment to reach our stand. Don uses the same stands every year and did not have a back up plan in case the game was not moving. We sat the stand for 66 hours ...6 days for 11 hours a day and between Glen and myself we saw a total of 5 deer during the week. The owner never offered any suggestions other then to be patient however when we would hike into our stands we were seeing little if any fresh tracks in the snow. I asked him a number of times to move to s different stand but he would just say be patient. I finally on Friday took a pop up bilnd blind in with me and hunted from it. We would liked to have thought Don would have offered to push the bush or something other then to set in his truck all day drinking coffee, smkoing and listening to sports radio. I will never hunt with this outfiiter again, not because we did not harvest a buck but because of his lack of effort.

I have hunted with Don 4 times. He is very knowledgeable about the game you are hunting and the property he hunts. He runs a family run operation and does not over book by any means. He generally only hunts one or two weeks a year and has a 4 hunter max. When you hunt in on his property the deer you see are relaxed and not pressured. Anyone who hunts northern whitetails knows that you do not see the huge numbers of deer you would in Texas but the ones you see are generally large. Also the week you hunt is very important. Don will tell you when exactly to come. Listen to him because he knows his land My group including myself (father, brother, cousin, myself) have taken some really nice bucks and will be returning without a doubt. I have hunted across the United States and Africa. I never feel as comfortable as I do when I am in Don’s camp. You feel like one of the family when you are there. I along with three buddies traveled to St. Isidore Alberta for the first Spring Bear Hunt of 2007. We flew to Edmonton and drove the remaining 6 hours North to the lodge. Scott Taylor is a hands on owner who truly cares about your success and satisfaction. When he could not actually be in camp, he managed to call and personally speak to every hunter daily. The lodge is terrific, Smokey the cook is fabulous. My Guide Jamie without a doubt knows his business and went above and beyond to insure success, as did all other guides. We went 200% each taking two bears. This outfit is serious about hunting and their effort and preparation was apparent. Outfitter Review: Lone Pine - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Jason Martyn

Hunter: Mike Smith

Animals Hunted: Mule/Whitetail

* Jason has some good animals but he needs to have blinds/stands better established or you end up doing a lot of roadhunting. I believe that if he and guides actually built some good ground blinds and had climbers or stands set it could be better for whitetail especially. All of my hunting was done from the ground or truck and thats not what his website stated, it says stands and ground blinds....never saw any. I will say that he and staff do try hard to get you into some good deer and they do a good job but theres too much roadhunting for me. His Gram did cooking and its the best. If Jason wants to be a "Big Time" outfitter he has to put time and effort in and have good travel/funnels for hunters to hunt. The land is there, they just have to get off their asses and do it right. Some guys like roadhunting and some like it to a point. Oh and I recommend him drawing stands/hunt sites from a hat or something because it appears that certain "return" clientele or guys with most $$ get the more preferrable spots. If Jason guides you, you will most likely have a better hunt than if one of his other guides guide you....they need to share the good lands equally.

Outfitter / Owner: Don Tyschuk

Hunter: Glen Bachman

Animals Hunted: Whitetail/Moose

Third time hunting with this outfitter. First two times deer were moving on this outfitters limited property and I was successful. This year there was no deer movement on outfitter's one quarter section of hunting property and the outfitter, who also acted as the guide, just sat in his truck all week smoking cigarettes. This is an outfitter who will do absolutely nothing extra to insure hunters success. He acts as the guide to save money. He hunts the same stands year in and year out and is physically unable to do much more than sit in his truck and smoke. If you get lucky you may get a chance at a big deer--but it will be strictly luck as this outfitter will do nothing once he's got your money. Be prepared to sit and see nothing for a solid week and do not expect this outfitter to be anything but lazy. Did I mention that he chain smokes on the way to and from dropping you off at your stand? And that's if the snow isn't to deep for him to drive you in. On one day of the hunt I had to walk almost a mile through 2 feet of snow to get to my stand as this guy was unprepared to get me into the stand because of the conditions. It was walk in or sit in the truck with him smoking all day.I would stay away from this outfitter if you expect anything more than a cab ride to your stand. There will be no extra effort so do not expect it.

I saw 100's of deer during my hunt and three shooters (High 160's, Mid 170's, and a Low 160's) not to mention countless 130 and 140 Class Bucks and even a couple 150 bucks. Saw multiple 180+ Mulies including one 190 at 50 yards.Scott's team works extremely hard for you and they want you to enjoy your time with them. His repeat clientele should be testimony enough for his quality operation (85% repeat hunters). During my hunt there was a 187, 183, and 174 plus countless 160's whitetail taken. A 190 Mulie was taken along with several others. The lodge is comfortable and Smokey (the cook) makes plenty of down home style food. I was contacted by Rob in Aug of 05' asking if I would be interested in an Alberta white tail hunt. He was established in his guide service with gun hunting, however he was interested in branching out to bow hunters as well. I booked a 6 day all inclusive trip for October 05'. I was met at the airport by Rob and we made the 2 hour trip north to Elk Point. My accomidations were excellent as was the food. Everyone was courteous and very professional. The hunt was all that I was promised and more. I had the choice of several stands to hunt and information on what was being seen at each stand. I saw plenty of game and took a 300lb 9 point buck the 4th day of my hunt. I also went duck hunting and took a coyote with my bow. I would recommend ranchland outfitters to anyone interested in quality hunting in Alberta Canada. You can see my deer on his web site www.ranchlandoutfitters.com.

booked this hunt after talking to one of the owners.I was told the average size bull moose taken was 50-55 inch. Upon arriving at camp and meeting our guide he informed me that was not true. He said we could expect to see bulls in the range of 30-35 inch. After hunting 3 days and only seeing 1 moose [35 in.] that my buddy took. I told the guide that I was not interested in shooting a small moose. We left the river and returned to the lodge to hunt wolf and coyote with the licences we bought. The next morning after asking the guide [Cal] to take us for wolf and coyote he said he did not know where to go and hunt. All he wanted to do was watch television. The whole selling pitch for the hunt was a lie. The head gude and a owner at the lodge were very unfriendly they would hardly speak. This is not a professional run operation.

2x1 Hunt for which my friend and I purchased fishing licenses (from the outfitter) then were flown to a lake that the outfitter knew had no fish. Furthermore, both guides in camp had NEVER guided for moose before and upon questioning we learned were not able to cape a moose if the need arose. Repeated equipment failure and shortage of gasoline for boats hampered hunting along with the unwillingness of the guides to hunt in windy weather. Ultimately my friend and I ended up hunting without the guides and my friend took a small bull on the second last day of hunt. I would not recommend this outfitter to anyone. He was mostly interested in getting our money. Once that was accomplished the effort to get us an opportunity at an animal ceased. We ended up having to do it ourselves.

Bowhunted 3 years running with Bearpaw. All hands work very hard to give a great hunt. Hunts are typically 9 days compared to most outfits 6. Mule deer quality is off the charts. I killed 2 bucks with them, 188 & 207. Saw MANY 200" plus deer. Bear numbers and quality are silly. Scott Taylor is as straight as they come. Him and his staff deliver on promises, something that is increasingly rare in the industry.

Outfitter Review: Raven Outfitters - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Duke

Hunter: Todd Campbell

Animals Hunted: Black bear

We hunted in may of 06. We were the last truckload of hunters to arrive at camp. We ended up with a tent that had been set up earlier that morning in a rush. We were so excited about going out to hunt that day that we didn't even realize that the tent had been put up incorrectly and you couldn't close the flaps on the door. We realized this when we returned to camp from hunting at 2:00 in the morning. We also did not have a camp stove in the tent like everyone else. We froze our behinds off that night. The next morning Duke, the owner, had one of the guides reset the tent. It was still not acceptable and we dismantled and reset it ourselves. They got us a stove on the third day. The beginning of the hunt was rather miserable. Once the tent issue was fixed, we had a great time. They did a good job of getting us on active baits, and the food was good and plentiful. If you went hungry it was your own fault. The guides were stressed that the bears were not as active as normal with some guys in camp not filling any tags. Duke offered that anyone who wanted to stay until they fill their tags could stay over for free. My partner and I had already filled our tags and went home. There were 10 hunters in camp and we killed 11 bears by the end of the trip. Three guys stayed on for a few more days and continued to hunt when we left. Some of the guys in camp that had been there before said that the lack of bear sightings was not normal and that most guys usually tag out on 2 bears in 3-4 days. That was not our experience but I would go back. The guides are all friendly and well experienced.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Whitetails - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: James & Kathy Sheret

Hunter: Richard T. Berry

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

I have hunted with this outfitter in both 2004 and 2005 and will return this year again. Trevor Walker has been my guide both seasons and hope to get him again this season. Both years I have taken bucks and huge 180 Booners have been spotted but did not give a shot opportunity within range. Hunting is just that HUNTING. There are no guarantees. I saw alot of young 3 year old bucks last year and they will make excellent trophies this coming year no doubt. You stay in the outfitter's home and his wife is an excellent host/cook. They treat me like family and we keep in touch throughout the off season. If you want a good first experience on an outfitted hunt in Alberta I would recommend this outfitter. Last year there was no snow and that held back the rut and we had no control of that. I hear to many "horror" stories about other guides so for me personally I will stick with this one.

Outfitter Review: Lightning D Outfitters - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Lyle Duperron

Hunter: Ronald Grenadier

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

Lyle's bear operation covers two very large area allocations about 100 miles (not Kilometers) east of High Level, Alberta. Lyle is a top bear man, who knows as much if not more than most, about bears. Lyle is one of the few who can claim a 100% success rate of better. Usually he runs 150% to 200%.I just completed a hunt with Lyle the week of May 7 - 14, 2006, and I took one nice bear, and one exceptional bear, both with a bow. The other hunter in camp shot one bear with a rifle, and missed a huge another HUGE bear (7 1/2 to 8 foot based on the size of pads and actual sighting) at 30 yards. Had this bear been taken, the hunt for this week would have been at 200%. Although I didn't see any bears until the second half of the week, ALL THE BAITS WERE VERY ACTIVE. The other hunter in camp saw bear starting his 1st full night of hunting. The camp is your basic wall tent bear camp. A portable shower was set up to help keep the grime off. Water was heated in a paid for a hot shower which I used every second day. Even the Cree Indian guide in camp, Graham, used it and found it good. The food was camp food: bacon, eggs, potatoes, sausage, toast, etc.If you want a modern lodge, this hunt probably won't work for you. BUT, if you want the chance or opportunity for an above average or exceptional bear, then come hunt with Lyle.

Outfitter Review: Packsaddle Adventures - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Larry Chapman

Hunter: Joe Lippincott

Animals Hunted: Moose

Larry is a great woodsman; my wife shot her bull on day 4 after tracking several in snowy woods. Larry tracked this particular animal for 3+ hours before it was seen/shot. His woods skills are something! We did our own lodging (mtn. resort) & cooking. This was our best true hunting experience by far. Highly Reccomended.

Outfitter Review: Mountain Country Outfitters - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Chris David/Lain Roth

Hunter: mike Hagen

Animals Hunted: Moose

Not one promise was kept with this hunt. I have been on at least 20 + guided hunts from Africa to all over Canada and US. This was the worst hunt I have ever experienced. Stayed in low rate motel 2 hours each way from hunting area. Road hunted for 12 hours a day + round trip of 4 hours to and from hunt area. Spent 16 hours a day for a week in old pick up that we had minor problems with. I would not take this hunt for free. Ate meals mostly out of convience stores when we got gas. All meals were to be home made and was promised to stay in a cabin on hunting area. Never saw a cabin or had a home cooked meal. Paid for my own food. The guide did not know the area at all and had never hunted there himself. A very disappointing experience. Never wrote before about hunts and as any hunter knows, they don't always go as planned but this hunt was worth telling others about. The story can go on but readers do have a idea of what to expect if you choose this outfitter.

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff Lander

Hunter: Jim Casto Jr

Animals Hunted: Mule deer

I was on a spot and stalk mule deer hunt. I can't tell you how great this hunt was. You'd have to experience it for yourselves. We saw huge bucks; probably an average size would be around 150". My buddy shot a 160 class buck, and I missed a 150" class deer. We saw some really huge ones. Prepare to walk a lot, but it's sure worth it.

I was tempted to arrow a 160 the first night so I could hunt the 100's of coyotes we saw .My 5th hunt in canada and the best .

My guide only had two days to scout my hunt area. The cook was not happy. My guide did cook a good lunch for me in the bush. Overall not a positive experience. I have been on many guided trips and this is the worst I have ever been treated.

Outfitter Review: Wilderness Adventures - AB

Outfitter / Owner: Louis Shilka

Hunter: tim

Animals Hunted: moose

Every time we would go to a new hunting spot the guide Louis would tell us how in previous weeks of hunting they had taken bulls. Dont know about you but I dont want to be taken to a spot that someboy else has already taken the most prominent bull out of and hunting pressure and human interferance has the rest of the animals pushed so far back in the bush that it is nearly impossible to hunt them. I thought that was what you paid a guide for to scout out an area and give you the best possible chance at an animal. You could tell that there was no pre scouting done at wilderness adventures. I think it would be safe to say that Louiss number one buisness is his domestic Elk herd not his guide service. This is not cutting him down as a person he was a great person , and his cook also. They dont get any better.

Outfitter / Owner: Greg Dussome

Hunter: Michael D Hinton

Animals Hunted: Elk , Deer , Bear

Had a great time and saw alot of beautiful country but the game was very scarce. This will be the last public land hunt I ever go on. I was lead to believe there was more game in the area than there was. I let one small mulie buck walk and did see some black bear but I was there to elk hunt and I did not see a bull!
